2 Transformative Learning Objectives ( Central Six ) Transformative learning goals (the Central Six ) have been identified as: 1. Discipline Knowledge. 2. Leadership. 3. Problem Solving (Research, Scholarly and Creative Activities). 4. Service Learning and Civic Engagement. 5. Global and Cultural Competencies. 6. Health and Wellness. This course addresses objectives 1, 2, 3, and 5: 1. Discipline knowledge- in this class it is imperative to build on the previous semesters and increase the knowledge of not only the language, but of the history and cultures of Spain. 2. Leadership- students will have to help one another with certain projects which require them to take a leadership role of their group. 3. Problem solving- students are required to use their first language as a guide to comprehending the target language. Building sentences and conveying information in Spanish is a constant form of problem solving. Oral presentations and essays are some of the ways students will solve problems. 5. Global and cultural competencies- in this class we look at the history and cultures of what is now Spain and how it relates to the other Spanish speaking countries. Course description and objectives: This course presents an overview of Spanish (Peninsular) cultures and its civilizations including its political and artistic history from its beginnings to the present day. The main goal of this course is to develop your awareness of themes relevant to the cultures, society, and civilizations of Spain. The communicative approach employed requires your active participation in listening, speaking, reading and writing in Spanish from the very beginning to further develop your Spanish language skills. Prerequisites: (ENG 1213 or 1223 or 1233 or 1243) and SPAN 2223 and (HUM 2113 or 2223) and (PHIL 1103 or 1113 or 1123 or 2073). Sophomore standing or above. Required materials: Pereira-Muro, Carmen. Culturas de España. Segunda Edición. CENGAGE LEARNING. ISBN- 10: Notebook, folder, pencil and pen. The Royal Language Academy Dictionary is available at: rae.es All extra material assigned. *Text must be purchased by the 2nd day of class and brought to every class. Text is available through the university bookstore. Grading System: Exams (4) 40% Quizzes, Homework, Short Essays (5) 30% Oral Presentations 15% Final Oral Presentation 15% 2

3 Grading scale: : A 80-89: B 70-79: C 60-69: D 0-59: F General information: 1. Exams. Formats may include all or some of these: listening comprehension, multiple choice, definitions, true or false, dictation, translation, answering questions in Spanish, reading, composition, bonus questions, and fill in the blanks. No make-ups. 2. Quizzes, Homework, Essays. Weekly homework, announced or unannounced quizzes, assigned topics for writing short essays (2-3 pages) in Spanish. Essays must follow MLA (Modern Language Association) format specified in the latest edition of the MLA Handbook available in the library with full documentation of sources used, and must be prepared on a computer using a program that puts in all Spanish accent marks. You must contact a classmate if you miss class to obtain all necessary information. Please make an appointment to discuss missed work with your professor during office hours. The lowest quiz (1), homework (1), and essay (1) grades will be dropped. 3. Oral Presentations. Students will be assigned brief oral presentations either alone, with a partner or group. If you work with other students 10% of the grade will be an evaluation of your participation as perceived by your classmate(s). No make-up. 4. Final Oral Presentation. In consultation with the professor, each student will choose a topic on which to investigate and do a Power Point presentation in Spanish (5 minutes). Your topic MUST BE APPROVED IN ADVANCE by the professor or it will not be accepted. No make-up. 5. Absences: You are allowed up to one week s worth of absences, however, after that 1% will be deducted from your final grade for each unexcused absence. You have to document your excuses. Examples of legitimate cause for absence (and documentation): illness (Dr. s office note), Universitysponsored events (sponsor s letter), death or serious illness in the family (obit or Dr. s note). The allowed absences are not an asset, they are for serious purposes. 6 absences will result in an F for the course. 6. Tardiness: Please arrive on time, as late arrivals are distracting to your instructor and other students. If you are late, you run the risk of missing important information, or even an exam or quiz that might be given at the start of class and that cannot be made up. Note that a late arrival of 5 minutes or more will be counted as an absence and you will not be allowed in the classroom. 7. Regents Statement on Course Workload and Homework-OSRHE II-2-34: It is expected that a fulltime college student will spend a minimum amount of time each week in class attendance and study out of class approaching a 40-hour work week. A person employed on a full time basis should not simultaneously expect to maintain a full-time academic schedule. At the undergraduate level, this means that for each hour in class, a student is expected to spend at least two (2) hours doing homework. For a three credit class, a student is expected to spend six (6) hours a week doing homework. 8. Special needs: The University of Central Oklahoma complies with section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act of Students with disabilities who need special accommodations should make their requests by contacting the coordinator of Disability Support Services, at The office is located in the Nigh University Center, Room 309. Students should also notify the instructor of their special needs. These contacts must be made no later than the end of the first week of 9. Academic Integrity: Students are expected to maintain complete honesty and integrity in the academic experiences both in and out of the classroom. 4 10. Plagiarism: UCO subscribes to the Turnitin.com plagiarism prevention service. Students agree that by taking this course, all required assignments may be subject to submission for textual similarity review to Turnitin.com for the detection of plagiarism. All submitted assignments will be included as source documents in the Turnitin.com restricted access reference database for the purpose of detecting plagiarism of such assignments. Use of the Turnitin.com service is subject to the Terms and Condition of Use posted on the Turnitin.com website. Turnitin.com is just one of various plagiarism prevention tools and methods which may be utilized by your faculty instructor during the semester. The UCO Student Handbook describes the process for contesting allegations of plagiarism. 11. Tutor/Media Room: The tutoring and media office (LAR 122) is available for language students needing assistance or to borrow films. The tutor schedule will be available after the second week of class. 12. Extra Credit: No extra credit will be assigned for this class. 13. Incomplete work: A grade of I for incomplete work will only be given in the case of a verified emergency/personal need for a student who has attended at least 50% of the total class periods and completed at least 50% of the class assignments. It is the student s responsibility to communicate with the instructor as soon as possible concerning this need. If a student has missed 50% of the class meetings by midterm, the student should consider dropping the course. 14. Student Information Sheet and Syllabus Attachment: Other: No food or chewing gum allowed in the classroom. Please turn off all electronic devices before coming to class. While in class, all devices must be stored away. Texting or surfing the internet during class time will result in the student being asked to leave the classroom and an absence. Further disruptive behavior regarding electronic devices will be reported to proper University authorities.
