The course emphasizes the communicative use of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Special emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. Student Learning Outcomes (as described in course outline): 1. Comprehend basic spoken Spanish and use appropriate beginning to intermediate level vocabulary and grammar to expand ability to express oneself and communicate in the target language orally. 2. Comprehend beginning to intermediate level (oral or written) questions in Spanish and answer in writing, demonstrating accuracy and control of fundamental grammatical concepts. 3. Comprehend, and answer questions about, the content of short, basic texts in Spanish. 4. Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the diverse cultures of the Hispanic World, in areas that could include topics such as geography, diet, history, lifestyles, traditions and customs. 3 COURSE DESCRIPTION: A continuation of Spanish 1A, this course presents the fundamentals of Spanish and provides the tools for students to improve linguistic proficiency. The course emphasizes the communicative use of all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Special emphasis is placed on providing insights into the cultural diversity of the Spanish-speaking world. RECOMMENDED PREPARATION: ENGL 150-To ensure that students are able to contrast, compare and comprehend Spanish grammatical concepts and have an understanding of paragraph and composition writing. Are you in the right course? This course is not appropriate for students who have taken and passed two or more years of Spanish within the past three years. STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES: 1. Comprehend basic spoken Spanish and use appropriate beginning to intermediate level vocabulary and grammar to expand ability to express oneself and communicate in the target language orally. 2. This includes copying a classmate s homework assignment, cheating on an exam and using a translating service (like Google Translate ) to write assignments for you. Each assignment will allow you a certain number of new (translated) words. You MAY NOT translate full sentences or phrases on an assignment using a translating service. Engaging in any behavior that involves taking credit for work that is not your own will lead to an automatic failure. Cheating will also not be tolerated on either exams or homework. Anyone caught copying or allowing others to copy their work will receive an F. The student code of conduct is available on the College of the Redwoods website at: CLASS STRUCTURE: We will cover Lección 6 to Lección 10 from the textbook and a brief introduction to formal commands and the present subjunctive. Each class session will consist of a short review of the new grammatical concepts which will be followed by pair and group activities that are designed to help you practice the language. I will be speaking as much in Spanish as possible and expect students to do the same. It is my intent to make the language understandable to you and to create a comfortable atmosphere in which all feel safe to practice the language without judgment. My office hours: I am here to assist you in any way to support your success in the class. I encourage you to stop by with any questions or concerns you have about an assignment or your experience in the course. If you are struggling with the material, please let me know right away and seek help. Don t wait until you are overwhelmed to seek help. If you are unavailable during my office hours but would like to set up a meeting, please me or speak with me after class. I am more than willing to set up a meeting time that would work with your and my schedules.

4 Emergency Procedures Please review the campus evacuation sites, including the closest site to this classroom (posted by the exit of each room) and review for information on campus Emergency Procedures. During an evacuation: Be aware of all marked exits from your area and building. Know the routes from your work area to the nearest exits. Once outside, move to the nearest evacuation point outside your building. Keep streets and walkways clear for emergency vehicles and personnel. Do not leave campus, unless it has been deemed safe by the Incident Commander or campus authorities. (Be aware CR s lower parking lot and 101 frontage are within the Tsunami Zone). RAVE College of the Redwoods has implemented an emergency alert system. Everyone is entered already to receive a message at their CR address. In the event of an emergency on campus, you can also elect to receive an alert through your personal , and/or phones at your home, office, and cell. This emergency alert system will be available to all students, staff, and other interested parties. Registration is necessary in order to receive emergency alerts. Please go to and use the Register button on the top right portion of the registration page to create an account. During the registration process you can elect to add additional information, such as office phone, home phone, cell phone, and personal . Please use your CR address as your primary Registration . Your CR address ends with redwoods.edu. We will test the system each semester to be sure that you are getting alerts at all of your destinations. A) Class communication and conduct STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES 1) Speaking in a new language can cause anxiety in some people and that is okay. We should all treat each other with respect and understanding throughout the learning process. Please respect others efforts by speaking in Spanish as best you can and by avoiding comments on others proficiency. We are here to learn and grammatical mistakes are to be expected and tolerated. In fact, such mistakes are appreciated when they demonstrate that students are trying to communicate beyond their abilities. 2) The classroom will be a safe place for all students. Rude behavior and/or inappropriate language will not be tolerated. Any comments or behavior that clearly disregard the rights of other students to enjoy a safe intellectual climate in the classroom will not be tolerated. You will receive one warning in class if it happens, and after that you will be asked to leave. 3) When communicating with me by , please make sure you include your full name in all communication and include the course number in your subject line. When leaving a voice mail message, please make sure to leave me your phone number so that I may return your call in a timely manner. On the Supersite, please do not create a username that does not include your real name. This ensures I can identify who you are and give you proper credit for your work. The use of cell phones and/or electronic devices will not be permitted in the classroom except for brief use to look up a word in Spanish. It is not recommended that you use the online textbook in class exclusively as there is not always wifi in all classrooms. It is best to bring a copy of the textbook to class with you.

5 B) Class Preparation 1) This is a four-unit course and the work-load reflects that. It is not realistic to assume that you can pass without doing the assigned textbook and electronic homework on a daily basis. You should also practice speaking español outside of the class as much as possible. 2) This course requires that you access the Internet on a regular basis. All students should be familiar with basic technology used in the classroom setting. I will utilize the Canvas program to communicate about assignments, to post grades, and to send . Students should also have access to a reliable printer. Both computers and printers are available for student use in the Learning Resource Center on the Eureka Campus. 3) Each student MUST come to class with the book. Failure to come with the book may result in you being asked to leave class for that day beginning the third week of classes. C) Class participation (10%) Learning another language requires active engagement with the new structures learned and interaction with the instructor and peers. You cannot expect to successfully learn the language if you do not attend class. Full participation means arriving to class on-time, familiar with the topic of the day and ready to interact with peers and instructor in Spanish (as much as possible), and staying for the full class period. To assess your participation for each class period, you will be evaluated through two different assignments: warmup questions and end of class sheets. You have to be in class on-time and stay for the full period to receive credit for doing both. Below is a short description of them. More details will follow in class and on Canvas. Warmup questions: Beginning at some point in the first few weeks, during the first five minutes of class, you will practice asking and answering questions that will be passed out to you and also posted on Canvas. You will be expected to come to class prepared to engage in this activity, which means you ll need to understand the questions and be able to answer them when practicing with your classmates. More instructions for this activity and the questions will be posted on Canvas under Warmup questions. You should refer to these questions before every class period to prepare yourself for each day s warmup. Half of your participation points will come directly from your participation in these questions. I will walk around and note those who have participated in the warmup questions. This will be how I take roll for the day. Therefore, if you arrive late or are absent, you will not be able to participate in the warmup questions. This will be a vital way for you to practice speaking in Spanish each class period. There will be no makeups. End of class activities: The second way that you earn points for your attendance in class is through the End of class activities. At the end of each class period, you will receive credit for participating in the activities that we do at the end of each class period. The activities will help you to practice new vocabulary or grammatical structures. If you leave class early or are absent, you will not be able to participate in the End of class activities for that day. There will be no makeups. D) Attendance Policy a. Attendance is mandatory and extremely important. I take roll every day. I will drop you from the course IF: i. you do not attend the first day or are absent during the first week of classes without contacting me by or phone to tell me you intend to stay in the course. ii. I can, up to the tenth week, drop any student who may be considered inactive due to excessive absences (five or more total absences). b. Ultimately, you are responsible for dropping the course if you stop attending the class. E) Course Management 1) All students should be familiar with basic technology used in the classroom setting. I will use Canvas to manage the course. The Canvas site will be the main point of contact between us. On this site, I will send

6 , and you will find my Powerpoint presentations, assignment and homework explanations, reminders and grades. Students must check their and log in to Canvas daily. Students should also have access to a reliable printer. Both computers and printers are available for student use in the Learning Resource Center on the Eureka Campus. 2) All registered CR students have access to Canvas. Sign in to your account by going to the following page: 3) If at any point, you are having problems, please refer to the following website which has full instructions for signing into and navigating Canvas: F) Homework You will have three types of regular homework in this course that will be graded: 1) Textbook Homework (10%): Please bring the Panorama Textbook to every class meeting and refer to the Calendario semanal (Weekly Schedule) on a daily basis. The Calendario semanal can be found below. On it, you will be able to see what textbook section will be covered each class meeting, the textbook homework and reminders about the Supersite homework. In the Calendario semanal, textbook page numbers are also followed by various activities (Inténtalo, 1,2,etc), that you will find within the assigned pages, that you also need to complete before coming to class. All textbook homework is due by the day it s listed on the course calendar. It is imperative that you study the textbook pages and do assigned textbook exercises, for that day, before coming to class. You need to handwrite the answers to your homework exercises on a separate sheet of paper so I can collect it and give you points for it. At times, I will also have you complete activities from handouts and reading material posted on Canvas and these will often be turned in for a grade. Class homework will be given credit at the beginning of class before we go over it as a class to ensure it is done before class starts. Any homework done in class will not receive credit. Please try to get help from me if you don t understand the homework. While it is okay to have wrong answers, I need to see that you have made an effort to at least try to answer the questions. Many homework assignments have instructions posted on Canvas and the calendar states which ones these are. If you are having a hard time with understanding the homework, please me or come by my office to get help. *If you aren t able to come to class, you may type your answers and send the completed homework to me as a.pdf or.docx attachment through before the end of the class period. 2) Independent Out-of-Class Homework (10%): In addition to the Class Homework from the Calendario semanal, you will also have electronic workbook homework that you will complete on the Panorama Supersite. These exercises will correspond with the material covered in the textbook and will have weekly due dates. To access this homework, log on to the Vistas Supersite at See instructions for registering on the site under the Resources section of the Canvas site for the course. a) The due dates for these activities will appear both on the Supersite and on the Calendario semanal. All of this homework will be completed and graded online. You don t need to turn in a paper copy of this homework to me. Please have access to the Supersite no later than September 3rd if possible. b) Supersite work will be due at 1:00 am on Saturday mornings. The calendar states the weeks you will have homework due as well as the Supersite itself. *****Please plan accordingly, SEE LATE WORK POLICY BELOW.*****

7 c) If you have any technical problems with the Vistas Supersite, please visit their helpdesk at support.vhlcentral.com or contact them at: (800) or d) If you feel that the system s grading of your work is unfair or that there is a mistake, you are able to send a request to me and I will review your answer and decide if extra points will be given. To send this request, click on Ask your instructor at the bottom of the screen. Write in the comment box what you believe the grading issue to be or any other comment or question you have. e) I will be online during my office hours should you have any questions or concerns about the Supersite homework. In order to receive prompt help, please contact me during my office hours by phone or me to schedule an appointment to get help. If you ask for help only through the site itself, it may take me longer to get back to you. f) On the Supersite, please do not create a username that does not include your real name. This ensures I can identify who you are and give you proper credit for your work. 3) Exam reviews (10%): No later than one week before each exam review day, there will be an exam review on Canvas under Exam reviews. The format of the exam review will be similar to the format of the exam. PLEASE PRINT AND COMPLETE THE EXAM REVIEW AND BRING IT WITH YOU TO CLASS ON THE DAY OF THE EXAM REVIEW ( REPASO. ) We will review it in class and you will need to turn it in the day of the exam. The exam review gives you the opportunity to interact with the material on the exam and to come with questions about anything that you don t understand. G) Late work and makeups Late work: I will accept only TWO assignments late for a penalty of minus 25% per day they are late. I will not accept any more than that. An absence is not a legitimate excuse for turning in work late. If you don t work to me by the day it is due, then I will not accept it. If you submit a Supersite exercise late, you must notify me by phone or that you would like to use your late assignment toward it in order to get credit for it. Makeups: If you miss an exam, you will be allowed to make it up at a later time ONLY under the following circumstances: You must contact me by the end of the class period missed either by phone or . You must also be able to make up the exam within 48 hours (so that your classmates can get their graded exams back in a timely manner). If you do not meet the above criteria for makeups, you cannot make up a missed exam. H) Chapter Exams (35%), Oral Proficiency Interview and Final exam/writing (20%) 1) There will be four chapter exams and only three will be counted. If you miss one, it will be the one that is not counted. If you take all four of them, the lowest grade will drop. 2) Everyone must take the final exam. The Oral Proficiency Interview will be completed in-class before the day of the final exam. See Calendario semanal for the final exam time and date. I) Projects (15%) There will be different types of these assignments at different times in the semester. The Calendario seminal states the due dates of these assignments. The assignments are as follows: short written project, group dialogue, edited inclass writing, and write-up about one or two films (to be shown in class). Instructions for these will be announced well in advance in class and detailed instructions will be posted on Canvas. J) Extra credit opportunities: Throughout the semester, you will have the opportunity to earn extra credit toward your Panorama Supersite and/or Textbook homework/exam reviews grades the following ways: 1. Visiting the tutor or me for help: You may visit the Spanish tutor in the Learning Resource Center for help at anytime throughout the semester. You may also make an appointment with me for help. You will earn 30 points per thirty minutes that you spend with them. You will not earn points unless you actually show up to an

8 appointment with them. Be sure to have the tutor sign the Tutoring sign-off sheet (to be found on Canvas Resources ) and show me their signature/s at some point in the semester in order to get credit. 2. Correcting an exam or homework: You can also improve your grade on an exam or homework assignment by (up to) 5% if you get help from the tutor (or me) and have them (or me) sign the Tutoring sign-off sheet (to be found on Canvas Resources ) stating that you got help from them on completing/fixing the exam/homework. Some homework assignments (like textbook exercises) may be granted full credit if signed by the tutor (or me). The exam or homework assignment must be fully corrected to receive this credit and given to the instructor within two weeks of receiving the grade. Please contact me if you have further questions about this. 3. Attending Spanish conversation hour: You will earn 30 points per thirty minutes that you spend in the conversation hour. Times and location of the conversation hour will be announced at the beginning of the semester. K) Language/content disclaimer: We will be watching a film this semester that may contain some profanity, violence, and/or suggestive sexual content.
