1 Accessing the Tufts Network with a Mac School of Arts, Sciences, and Engineering Accessing Network Drives with a Mac: An overview When you power up your Mac, you will notice that the Tufts network drives are not automatically available on your desktop. In order to access the files saved to your P: or Q: drives you must connect to them. Connecting to the P: and Q: Drives Displaying the Finder menu bar Confirm that the Finder menu bar appears at the top of your desktop. If the Finder menu bar does not appear at the top of your desktop, either: o Click anywhere on your desktop or o On the dock, click on the Finder icon. 1
2 Connecting to the P: Drive From the Go menu, select Connect to Server. The Connect To Server window will appear Click in the box labeled Server Address and type smb://titan.tccs.tufts.edu. Click on the button labeled Connect. 2
3 The SMB/CIFS Filesystem Authentication window will appear with your Mac account username in the box labeled Username (for example, ANDREADALEY). In the box labeled Username, type your Tufts network account username (for example, adaley03). In the box labeled Password type your Tufts network account password. Click on the button labeled OK. The SMB Mount window will appear. Confirm that your Tufts network account username appears in the box labeled Select a share (for example, adaley03). Click on the button labeled OK An icon labeled with your Tufts network account username will appear on your desktop (for example, adaley03). 3
4 The window labeled with your Tufts network username account (for example, ADALEY03) will automatically open allowing you to access the files saved to your P: drive. Tip: Adding the P: drive to your list of favorite severs Every time you connect to a network drive, you will need to know the path for that drive. To add the path for the P: drive to a list of your favorite servers so you only have to remember it once: Confirm that the Finder menu bar appears at the top of your desktop. If the Finder menu bar does not appear at the top of your desktop, use the techniques pre3viously described in the section labeled Displaying the Finder menu bar. 10 Creating a desktop alias for your Q: drive A desktop alias for your Q: drive will allow you to quickly and easily connect to your Q: drive and access the files that you saved to it. In order to create a desktop alias, you must have the User Authentication Model (UAM) on your computer. If you have already downloaded the UAM, continue to the section labeled Connecting to the Q: drive. If are unsure or have not already downloaded the UAM, please continue to the section labeled you Downloading the User Authentication Module (UAM). Downloading the User Authentication Module (UAM) From the dock, click on the Safari icon. Visit On the left side of the mactopia window, click on the link labeled Other Products. 10
11 From the list that appears, click on the link labeled Windows 2000 SFM. The Windows 2000 SFM window that appears. In the Download UAM Now section, click on the link labeled UAM for OS X 10.1 or later. The icon labeled MSUAM_for_X will appear on your desktop. 11
12 The corresponding folder labeled MSUAM_for_X will also appear on your desktop. Double-click on the folder labeled MSUAM_for_X. The window labeled MSUAM_for_X will appear. Double-click on the icon labeled Install MSUAM for X. 12
13 The Welcome to the Microsoft User Authentication Installer window will appear. Click on the button labeled Continue. The Important Information window will appear. When you have finished reading the information in the window, click on the button labeled Continue. 13
14 The Select a Destination window will appear. In the box labeled Select a Destination, click on the icon labeled Macintosh HD. A green down-facing arrow will appear over the Macintosh HD icon. Click on the button labeled Continue. 14
15 The Easy Install on Macintosh HD window will appear. Click on the button labeled Upgrade. The Authenticate window will appear with your Mac account username in the box labeled Name. In the box labeled Password, type your Mac account password. Your Mac account password is the passwords you use to log onto your computer. Click on the button labeled OK 15
16 The Install Software window will appear, displaying the status of the installation. Once the installation is complete, the Install Software window will display the message The software was successfully installed. Click on the button labeled Close. 16
17 Connecting to the Q: drive Confirm that the Finder menu bar appears at the top of your desktop. If the Finder menu bar does not appear, use the techniques previously described in the section labeled Displaying the Finder menu bar From the Go menu, select Connect to Server. The Connect To Server window will appear 17
18 In the box labeled Server Address, type Click on the button labeled Connect. The Connect to Server TFTMAS1 as window will appear with your local account username in the box labeled Name (for example, Andrea Daley). 18
19 Double-click in the box labeled Name and type tufts\username (for example, tufts\adaley03). Your username is your Tufts Network account username. In the box labeled Password type your Tufts network password. Click on the button labeled Connect. The TFTMAS1 window will appear. 19
20 From the box labeled Select the volumes you wish to mount, click on the name of your department s share (for example, ITS). Click on the button labeled OK An icon labeled with the name of your department s share will appear on your desktop (for example, ITS). 20
21 The corresponding folder labeled with the name of your department s share (for example ITS) will automatically open allowing you to access any files saved to your department s Q: drive. Tip: Adding the Q: drive to your list of favorite severs Every time you log on to your computer, you will have to reconnect to the Q: drive using the techniques described in the Section labeled Connect to your Q: Drive. Apple allows you to add the network address for the Q: drive to a list of your favorite servers so you only need to remember it once. To add the network address of the Q: drive to your list of favorite servers: Use the techniques described to confirm that the Finder menu bar is visible. From the Go menu, select Connect to Server. The Connect to Server window will appear. In the box labeled Server Address, type Click on the button labeled with the plus sign. 21
22 The path to the Q: drive will appear in the box labeled Favorite Servers. Creating the desktop alias Once you have connected to the Q: drive, you can create a desktop alias. On your desktop, click on the icon labeled with the name of your department s share (for example, ITS). From the File menu select Make Alias. 22
23 The corresponding alias icon for your department s share will appear on your desktop (for example, ITS alias). Reconnecting to your Q: drive alias Every time you log on to your computer, you will have to reconnect to your Q drive and reauthenticate with your Tufts network username and password. To reconnect to your Q: drive alias: On your desktop, double-click on the icon labeled for your department s share (for example ITS, alias). The Connect to Server TFTMAS1 as window will appear with tufts\username in the box labeled Name (for example, tufts\adaley03). 23
24 In the box labeled Password, type your Tufts network password. Click on the button labeled Connect An icon labeled with the name of your department s share will appear on your desktop (for example, ITS).
