3 INTRODUCTION Brcade DCFM is a management applicatin that prvides easy, centralized management f the Strage Area Netwrk (SAN), as well as quick access t all prduct cnfiguratin applicatins. Using this applicatin, yu can cnfigure, manage, and mnitr yur netwrks with ease. In rder t intrduce higher scalability and perfrmance, Brcade DCFM was designed t perfrm discvery thrugh a single directr r switch, Brcade Fabric Manager was als designed t discver using this discvery switch mechanism. 4 Figure 1, Supprted upgrade paths Migratin Facts There is n charge fr Brcade Fabric Manager license cnversin t Brcade DCFM Enterprise: Fabric Manager custmers with valid sftware licenses are entitled t upgrade t a DFCM Enterprise license at n additinal charge. Custmers upgrading t DCFM Enterprise are required t purchase a service agreement with a minimum ne-year term. 5 MIGRATION OVERVIEW The migratin is described in detail in the Brcade DCFM Migratin and Transitin Guide. Fr yur cnvenience, this sectin lists high-level steps required fr the migratin in a Windws envirnment, including: Review the pre-flight checklist, making sure that: Yu have the DCFM license key (n the Key Certificate) and serial number (frm the DVD jewel case). A versin f Fabric Manager that meets migratin requirements is installed n yur server. The fabric has FOS 5.0.x r later running n all switches in the fabric. Yu cmplete items listed in the Migratin Cnsideratins sectin prir t perfrming the upgrade. NOTE: Ensure that all instances f the Fabric Manager client are clsed n the management server and n remte wrkstatins. Insert the Brcade DCFM installatin DVD int the drive n a Windws management server and fllw nscreen directins. Install DCFM and migrate data frm the Brcade Fabric Manager applicatin (culd take up t 30 minutes). Specify the fllwing settings and apply them (culd take up t 30 minutes): Cnfigure the IP server. Cnfigure server Syslg, Web server, SNMP, and starting prts. Cnfigure the fabric size (small, medium r large). Select the FTP server. Start the DCFM server and client. Once all the DCFM services are started, yu can lg in. Yu can use yur Admin User ID and passwrd frm Fabric Manager. PLANNING As with all technlgy upgrades in the data center, planning is a critical part f the prcess. When yu are migrating frm ne sftware applicatin t anther, yu need t find ut as much as yu can abut the new applicatin and hw it differs frm the applicatin yu are currently using, that is, Brcade Fabric Manager. Then decide the right time t upgrade and start putting a task list, task wners, and a timeline in place. Migratin Cnsideratins There are several things t cnsider when yu are making the decisin t migrate t Brcade DCFM: Back up the Brcade FM server befre starting the migratin. T pen the Server Management Cnsle, chse Start > Fabric Manager > Server Management Cnsle. Click the Database tab, click Backup Database, and click Backup. It is recmmended that yu capture Technical Supprt infrmatin fr the switches in yur fabrics. Chse Fabric Manager > Capture Technical Supprt Infrmatin. 6 Device names in Fabric Manager cannt be imprted t DCFM. Fabric Manager uses a Sybase database by Sybase, which is replaced by a different versin f Sybase in DCFM. Therefre nly sme, nt all, data is migrated. See the Migratin Facts sectin. Offline Zne Cnfiguratins Offline zne cnfiguratins are nt migrated autmatically. T imprt them manually: In Fabric Manager, chse Select Tasks > Zne Management > Zne Administratin, shwn in Figure 2. An ffline zne cnfiguratin that is saved t the Offline Repsitry in the FM database is highlighted in purple. T save this zne cnfiguratin, click the View/Edit Zne DB buttn. In the Zne Editr tl, chse File > Save Zne Database > T Fabric withut enabling and click OK. Perfrm the same prcedure fr every ffline database in each fabric. NOTE: Be sure yu chse t save this cnfiguratin t the fabric withut enabling the cnfiguratin. If yu enable the cnfiguratin, a new zne cnfiguratin will be enabled and change the cnnectin mapping between devices in the fabric. Figure 2. DCFM: Zne Administratin screen Perfrmance Mnitring Data Perfrmance mnitring data is nt migrated frm Fabric Manager t DCFM, but can be saved r exprted and viewed using Micrsft Excel r ther applicatins, as nted belw. It is recmmended that befre the migratin, yu create histrical r real-time reprts and exprt the files t yur lcal drive fr analysis. See the Brcade Fabric Manager Administratr s Guide fr mre infrmatin n generating and exprting reprts. These reprts can be exprted and used as a reference at a later time: Switch Health SAN Health Fabric Summary Physical Inventry Cnfiguratin Files Switch cnfiguratin files are nt migrated t DCFM. T save cnfiguratin files t DCFM. Save any switch cnfiguratins t the Fabric Manager repsitry. Chse Fabric Manager > Tasks > Switch Cnfiguratin Management > Save Cnfiguratin. Expand the Fabrics icn, select the apprpriate switches, click the right arrw (shwn in red), and click OK. Figure 3. 8 T exprt the cnfiguratin t the lcal drive, chse Fabric Manager > Tasks > Switch Cnfiguratin Management > View Cnfiguratin repsitry, shwn in Figure 4. Click Exprt and save it t a disk utside the Fabric Manager directry. NOTE: If the cnfiguratin files are nt exprted t a lcatin utside the Fabric Manager directry, there is a risk that the files will be deleted during the migratin. Figure 4. 9 Technical Supprt Infrmatin Switch technical supprt infrmatin is saved t either an internal r external FTP server via FM, depending n its cnfiguratin. If FM uses an internal FTP server, technical supprt infrmatin saved in this directry will be erased during the migratin must be manually migrated befre the DCFM installatin. If yu are saving the technical supprt infrmatin using the FM internal FTP server, t migrate the data t DCFM, mve the data residing n the FM FTP server t a directry utside the FM directry. By default the rt ftp directry in Windws is C:\FabricManager\server\server\fmserver\ftprt\technicalSupprt. See the Brcade Fabric Manager Administratr s Guide fr the rt directry n all ther platfrms. Mve all data t a temprary flder n yur lcal disk befre yu perfrm the migratin. When the migratin is cmpleted and DCFM is running, mve the data frm the temprary lcatin t C:\Prgram Files\DCFM 10.x.x\data\ftprt\technicalsupprt, which is the DCFM internal default FTP directry n Windws. If FM uses an external FTP server, DCFM will use this server and have access t all supprt infrmatin. The Discvery Switch The discvery switch is a switch in the fabric that uses in-band cmmunicatin t get fabric-wide infrmatin abut the Name Server, Zning, and fabric membership frm all ther switches. There must be at least ne discvery switch present in all fabrics. The presence f a discvery switch prvides significant help in imprving the scalability f the applicatin. NOTE: In the Brcade DCFM interface and dcumentatin, the discvery switch may be called the seed switch. General recmmendatins fr a discvery switch are: Entry-level switch, such as a the Brcade 200E r 300 Switch, fr small fabrics Brcade 4900 r 5300 (Brcade DCX/DCX-4S r recmmended) fr medium r large fabrics Nte the fllwing: DCFM expects the discvery switch t be running the mst recent level f firmware in the fabric. Switches running in Access Gateway mde cannt be used as discvery switches. Switches cnnected via an EX_Prt r VEX_Prt cannt be used as discvery switches. DCFM end users need t have administrative privileges n the discvery switch (r equivalent access, such as rt, factry, r admin). Eclipse (McDATA ruters) discvery and cnfiguratin is nt supprted. Pure QLgic/Cisc fabrics are nt discvered. Only basic infrmatin is displayed fr nn-brcade devices. Brcade DCFM allws yu t change the current discvery switch fr maintenance r replacement. If the discvery switch is nt reachable, a new discvery switch is selected amng the remaining switches. 10 Deplyment Best Practices fr Public/Private Netwrks There are many different ways that a DCFM server can be deplyed. Sme cnfiguratins are restrictive and prvide greater levels f security. Other cnfiguratins are mre flexible and may make it easier t deal with change. Planning the LAN cnnectivity fr DCFM will help t ensure that yur deplyment matches the needs f yur envirnment. Open Management Netwrk Fr the purpse f this dcument an Open Management Netwrk is ne where the DCFM server is attached t the cmpany intranet with a single Ethernet attachment, as shwn in Figure 6. The devices t be managed by DCFM are als attached directly t the cmpany intranet via Ethernet. Typically the server and the devices are in the same lcatin and likely n the same subnet, but devices culd be remte as well. DCFM client cnnectins DCFM Server Ethernet LAN Intranet Figure 6. Open management netwrk cnfiguratin There are several advantages t an pen management netwrk: Cnfiguring DCFM and the devices is straightfrward as there is little cncern fr IP rutes r the DCFM server having multiple Netwrk Interface Cards (NICs). Furthermre, a SAN administratr wh wishes t use Web Tls, Telnet, SSH, r ther management prtcls utside Brcade DCFM can easily d s frm any client statin with access t the intranet that the SAN devices are attached t. Anther benefit f an pen management netwrk is that the devices can be cnfigured t send asynchrnus messages t a server ther than the DCFM server. Fr example, SNMP r SYSLOG culd be cnfigured n each f the managed devices t send messages t a server (ther than the DCFM server), which wuld receive and prcess thse messages accrdingly. One f the mst imprtant benefits f an pen management netwrk is the ability t have a server that runs scripts that utilize SSH, Perl, Expect, r ther scripting prtcls t cmmunicate with and make changes n the Fibre Channel (FC) devices under management. 11 There are sme caveats, hwever, t using an pen management netwrk: Prbably the mst critical is the ther viewpint f ne f the strengths f this cnfiguratin, that is, that any device n the custmer intranet can use any f the available prtcls t access any backbne, directr, r switch attached t the netwrk. Prtecting the FC devices with strng passwrds is especially imprtant in this cnfiguratin. In additin, access restrictins can be set at either the managed SAN device (backbne, directr, switch) r in the managed Ethernet switch t which the SAN device s management prt(s) are cnnected. Restrictins can be set by IP address, IP prts, r bth. Ding s reduces the security cncerns f running an pen management netwrk. Attaching SAN devices t a cmpany intranet culd expse them t ther security threats, including attempts t gain access, denial f service attacks, and thers. As previusly explained, the risks f running in an pen management netwrk can be greatly reduced by creating access restrictins. Private Management Netwrk In a private management netwrk, Brcade DCFM is attached t bth the cmpany intranet with ne Ethernet cnnectin and a private netwrk, t which managed devices are als be attached. DCFM client cnnectins are accepted n the Ethernet cnnectin attached t the cmpany intranet, and all management traffic between DCFM and the devices are n the private netwrk, as shwn in Figure 7. Intranet DCFM client cnnectins DCFM Server Private LAN Figure 7. Private management netwrk cnfiguratin The private management netwrk was a cmmn cnfiguratin with Brcade Fabric Manager in the past. Many custmers used an Ethernet hub, which was included as part f a rack system int which the FC switches r directrs were installed in. While it is still pssible t run DCFM with a private management netwrk n a hub, yu can achieve better perfrmance between the DCFM server and the managed devices using a minimum f ne dedicated fast Ethernet switch (100 MB, full-duplex device). A private Virtual LAN (VLAN) n a larger netwrk switch wuld prvide the mst rbust slutin. A private management netwrk prvides the benefit f having the DCFM server act as a firewall between the cmpany intranet and the managed FC switches. Denial f service attacks and attempts t lg in culd largely be perfrmed nly against the DCFM server itself and nt against the managed devices. Access t the DCFM server shuld be prtected in the same way that ther critical servers in the data center are t prevent unauthrized access. Migrating frm Brcade Fabric Manager t Brcade DCFM 11 f 27

12 While the private management netwrk prvides a cnfiguratin that can prevent access ther than the DCFM server t managed devices, nte that there are prxy agents n the DCFM server that will allw limited access t the managed devices thrugh ther prtcls. A telnet and HTTP prxy bth exist in the DCFM server. The HTTP prxy prvides a mechanism t use Brcade Web Tls frm statins n the cmpany intranet ther than the DCFM server. N prxy agents exist n the DCFM server fr SSH, SCP, SNMP, FTP, r Syslg n the DCFM server. While it may still be pssible t use sme level f scripting (Perl, Expect, and s n) t make changes n the managed devices, it can be much mre cmplex in the private management netwrk cnfiguratin mstly due t the inability t have clients utside the private netwrk cmmunicate directly with the managed devices. It is likely that the nly way t d it securely wuld be t run the scripts n the DCFM server r add anther cnnectin t the private netwrk frm a server that runs the scripts t make changes n the managed devices. Hybrid Management Netwrk In rare cases, hybrid management netwrks, that is, private management netwrk tplgy and pen netwrk management tplgy are bth implemented with the same server, as shwn in Figure 8. In mst cases these cnfiguratins started as private management netwrks and later managed devices nt clse enugh t be included in the private management netwrk were added and were therefre brught under management in an pen management netwrk cnfiguratin. Sme data centers may decide t stay with a hybrid cnfiguratin fr varius reasns. There may be missin critical directrs n the private netwrk, while the devices n the cmpany intranet may be much less critical. Nte that a hybrid cnfiguratin is a valid cnfiguratin and that the benefits and drawbacks f the private and pen management netwrk types apply t their respective prtins f the hybrid management netwrk. 13 Split Management Netwrk Split management netwrks are usually fund when a Fibre Channel netwrk spans mre than ne lcatin r data center, as shwn in Figure 9. In a split management netwrk, sme prtin f the SAN is under management f a DCFM server in its lcatin, while anther prtin f the SAN is under management f a different DCFM server at anther lcatin. The actual LAN tplgy fr management is still likely t be either an pen management netwrk r a private netwrk management netwrk as described abve. Als describe ther prtcls that culd ptinally expsed fr ther services via the intranet cnnectin n the DCFM server, that is, SMI-S, SNMP, HTTP, SSL, telnet, SSH, and FTP. If a firewall is put between the DCFM server and the managed devices, which prts must be pened and which are ptinal. D nt cnsider just day-t-day management, but als the als the services listed abve. 14 Zning Using Brcade Fabric Manager, yu can cnstruct nline and ffline zne cnfiguratins and save them t the Fabric Manager database. Only ne cnfiguratin can be activated at a time, but all cnfiguratins are still saved t the database. Fabric Manager als prvides the ability t save the cnfiguratins t all the switches within a selected fabric. Please nte that nly thse cnfiguratins saved t the switch, within Fabric Manager, will be prted ver t DCFM (see the Offline Zne Cnfiguratins sectin abve). DCFM prvides similar functinality and has expanded the zning capabilities t view all zning cnfiguratins in a single pane and makes it easy t duplicate, remve, create, and cnfigure QS znes. See the Brcade DCFM User Guide fr zning functinality. Figure 10. DCFM Zning screen Nrthbund Ntificatin: SNMP, Syslg Frwarding The fllwing is infrmatin abut functinality in Brcade DCFM: SNMP Trap Frwarding: Yu can cnfigure the applicatin t send SNMP traps t ther cmputers. T crrectly cnfigure trap frwarding, yu must cnfigure the target cmputer s IP address and SNMP prts. SNMP v1 and v3 ptins are available in Fabric Manager and DCFM. Syslg Frwarding: Syslg messages are available nly n B-Series platfrms. Syslg frwarding is the prcess by which yu can cnfigure the management applicatin t send Syslg messages t ther cmputers. Switches send the Syslg infrmatin nly thrugh prt 514; therefre, if prt 514 is being used by anther applicatin, yu must cnfigure the management applicatin t listen n a different prt. Then yu must cnfigure anther Syslg server t listen fr Syslg messages and frward the messages t the management applicatin Syslg listening prt. Syslg messages are persisted in the database. Yu can view the Syslg messages frm the management applicatin. Hwever, the management applicatin des nt cnvert the Syslg messages int event bjects except fr the audit Syslg messages. 15 TOPOLOGY MAPS Client Interface Users f Fabric Manager will need t becme familiar and cmfrtable with the DCFM interface, as the tw differ in menu structure and layut. 16 Figure 12: DCFM tplgy view Tplgy Layut After upgrading t DCFM, yu will still be able t custmize parts f the tplgy, including the layut f devices and cnnectins and grup backgrund clrs, t easily and quickly view and mnitr devices. 17 Views The Views feature has expanded in DCFM t display all switches frm all fabrics in a single pane, as shwn in the Figure 11. Als in DCFM, users can create custmized views t include ne r mre fabrics t be viewed at nce. Figure 13 shws a custmized view named Crprate View, which includes fabrics Crprate-A and Crprate-B. A better way t achieve this gruping is t use the Server Prt Mapping feature, which perfrms the same functin. HBA server mapping is useful in situatins in which multi-prt HBAs cnnect t different fabrics. Right-click an HBA t initiate the HBA Server Mapping dialg bx, shwn in Figure 14. Figure 14. 18 INSTALLATION AND DEPLOYMENT Migrating t DCFM Ensure that yu have a serial number r a license key befre the installatin. Yu can install DCFM by either 1) Using the CD 2) Dwnlading the sftware frm the Brcade Partner Netwrk Web site. Fr all installatin prcedures, see the prduct dcumentatin. Installing the Remte Client There are tw ways t install the Brcade DCFM client: 1) Use the applicatin CD. 2) Dwnlad it frm the Brcade DCFM server Web site by pinting yur brwser t the IP address f the DCFM server. The DCFM client is nw a Web start applicatin launched frm the DCFM server; type the IP address f the DCFM server in the brwser windw. NOTE: If SSL was selected during the installatin, yu will need t use t access the DCFM Web site, shwn in Figure 15. Figure 15. This is because the netwrk address is embedded in the link with HTTP r HTTPS. That als means that if the netwrk address changes the link will fail. 20 If SSL was enabled and yu disable SSL, a Lgin Errr message is displayed when yu launch DCFM frm the Start Menu: T crrect this yu need t delete the link, clear ut the Java cache and reinitiate the Web Start the DCFM Client frm the DFCM Web page. This will reinstall the client and add the crrect link. If yu encunter these errrs, yu can reach the client via the Web Start link until yu can fix the prblem. Running the Client Launch the DCFM client either frm the Start menu r use the Web Start the DCFM Client link n the DCFM Web page. This displays the lgin screen, which is very similar t the Fabric Manager client lgin screen. The tw differences are that the netwrk address is nw ppulated by default ( hard cded ) and there is n Setup buttn. Setup ptins can be changed frm inside DFCM, which is a mre lgical place t make the changes. The default user name and passwrd have als remained the same: Administratr and passwrd. User names are n lnger case sensitive but passwrds cntinue t be case sensitive. In sme cases, a netwrk may use Virtual Private Netwrk (VPN) r firewall technlgy, which can prhibit cmmunicatin between servers and clients. In ther wrds, a client can find a server, appear t lg in, but is immediately lgged ut because the server cannt reach the client. T reslve this issue, a set f prts need t be pened up in the firewall. 22 Validatin Testing The main way t ensure that data has been migrated frm Brcade Fabric Manager t DCFM crrectly is t lk at the data in DCFM. Fr example, check the fllwing types f data: Switch Cnfiguratin. All switches discvered in Fabric Manager will be autmatically discvered in DCFM and will migrate the infrmatin belw. Right-click n switches in a fabric and chse Prperties t verify.
