4 Placement in Summer School is determined by the grade in which a student is enrolled during the school year. Some courses have specific grade level requirements and/or other prerequisites which should be carefully reviewed before registering. REGISTRATION Registration forms are included in this catalog and are available online at Registration will take place at the schools. APS students should register at their home schools. Non-APS students should register at the APS Summer School Office. Student welcome letters, bus stops and other information will be mailed June 25. Late Registration will be held in the Summer School Office on June Only current APS students who need to re-take a course they have failed will be allowed to register during this time. Please call for additional information. GENERAL INFORMATION Refunds (less a $100 fee) will be granted for withdrawals from elementary and secondary enrichment courses as long as students meet one of the following criteria: Medical reasons, upon presentation of a medical statement Death in the family Transfer of residence outside of Arlington Please note that refunds for enrichment courses are nonrefundable if one of the three criteria listed above is not met. Requests for refunds should be directed to the Summer School Office. Refunds will be processed through July 11, 2014 only. REDUCED FEES Reduced fees are available to current Arlington resident students who meet certain income eligibility requirements. To request a reduction in fees, a completed 2014 Application for a Reduction in Summer School Fees must be submitted along with the summer school registration form. PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY REGISTERED WITH APS All non-aps students must present complete health records, copies of which can usually be obtained from the current school at the time of registration. Health records include: Tuberculin skin test or evidence of a negative TB risk assessment done after June 2013 Vaccination records Physical examination done after June 2013 (elementary students only) Non-APS students who reside in Arlington must also provide proof of residency in order to qualify for resident fees. Residency is proven by providing a copy of a lease or mortgage, or by completing the APS forms A & B (available from the APS Student Services Office). Proof of guardianship may also be required. DEADLINES Registration deadlines are firm and absolute. Registration must be completed in person. Audits are not permitted. New students who are pre-registered to attend APS K-12 programs in the fall have until June 13, 2014 to register for summer school (all new pre-school students and students taking New Work for Credit must register by May 9). FEES AND REFUNDS Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Arlington Public Schools. Cash is not accepted. Registration fees are non-refundable for make-up and stengthening courses except under the following conditions: A course is canceled A student is no longer required to take a course A student does not meet the eligibility requirements for a course ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS Consistent attendance in summer school is critical at all grade levels. In the middle school and high school programs, neither grade nor credit is awarded for any class in which a student has more than three absences. In Summer School there are no excused absences, even in the case of a court appearance or death in the family. If a student is tardy three times, the tardies will count as one absence. Students who are more than 20 minutes late to class or who leave more than 20 minutes before class is over will be marked absent. Students who exceed three absences will be unable to continue in the summer program and will be withdrawn. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided only within the assigned summer school attendance area for all Arlington County students. Elementary students must live at least one mile from the summer school site, and secondary students must live one and a half miles from the summer school site, to qualify for transportation. Bus stops and additional transportation information will be sent to students by U.S. mail on June 25. Parents must arrange for younger children to be escorted to and from the bus stop. FOOD SERVICE Food will be available for purchase at most summer school sites. Students may use their lunch accounts and payments can be made to My School Bucks. APS students who received free or reduced cost lunch during the school year, are also eligible to receive free or reduced cost meals during summer school. 2 SUMMER SCHOOL

11 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS The APS elementary summer programs are considered to be an extension of the current school year. They offer a variety of opportunities that permit students to: Prepare for kindergarten Improve skills for learning Improve their English Experience educational and cultural enrichment Maintain acquired skills and work habits in mathematics and language arts Strengthen academic competencies and strengthen SOL deficiencies ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Program locations, times and dates are listed below. Detailed information on all elementary summer school programs appears on the following pages. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss possible areas of study and consult with their teachers and counselors in order to make appropriate course selections and register by the proper deadline. 14 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL III. SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS Summer school experiences for students who receive special education services are offered to students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. Registration is limited to students who were enrolled full time in APS during the school year. Summer school special education programs are not designed to be duplications of the regular school year programs. Although students with Extended School Year services (ESY) do not pay registration fees, they must submit a registration form by the relevant deadline. INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL-BASED SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, GRADES K-5 At each elementary math/language arts site, resource services will be available for students who receive this type of support during the school year. However, special education resource services during summer school will not be identical to the IEP services provided during the year. Summer school resource teachers ensure that accommodations and modifications are in place and provide direct/group instruction as needed. In addition, students should be able to work independently and maintain appropriate classroom behaviors. The Outdoor Lab summer camp provides students with the opportunity to explore the natural world at their own pace. The highly qualified staff will safely guide campers through various activities that may include wilderness survival, natural history, and nature s supermarket. This exciting summer program is conducted at the Phoebe Hall-Knipling Outdoor Laboratory near Warrenton, Virginia. All registrants are notified of transportation arrangements and required equipment prior to the scheduled session. Students are transported to the Outdoor Lab on Monday morning and returned to Arlington on Friday afternoon of the same week. Tents and meals are provided. Tent mates will be assigned by the Camp Director to ensure campers have the opportunity to make new friends. Students will be notified by mail from the Science Office by April 25 on the status of their applications. Although this camp is an extension of the elementary Outdoor Lab summer camp, a higher level of nature exploration, different activity options (like orienteering) and group initiatives help to give campers a distinct experience. Students are given opportunities to explore the natural world through focused activities of their own choosing and selfdirected free time activities. This exciting, highly successful summer camp is conducted at the Phoebe Hall-Knipling Outdoor Laboratory near Warrenton, Virginia.
