4 REGISTRATION Registration forms are included in this catalog and are available online at APS students should register at their home schools. Non-APS students should register at the APS Summer School Office. Late Registration will be held at Kenmore Middle School on June 25 from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Only current APS middle and high school students who need to re-take a credit-bearing course they have failed will be allowed to register during this time. STUDENT WELCOME LETTERS, BUS STOPS AND OTHER INFORMATION WILL BE MAILED JUNE 30. PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT CURRENTLY REGISTERED WITH APS All non-aps students must present complete health records, copies of which can usually be obtained from the current school at the time of registration. Health records include: Tuberculin skin test or evidence of a negative TB risk assessment done after June 2014 Vaccination records Physical examination done after June 2014 (elementary students only) Non-APS students who reside in Arlington must also provide proof of residency in order to qualify for resident fees. Residency is proven by providing a copy of a lease or mortgage, or by completing the APS forms A & B (available from the APS Student Services Office). Proof of guardianship may also be required. DEADLINES Registration deadlines are firm and absolute. Registration must be completed in person. Audits are not permitted. New students who are pre-registered to attend APS K-12 programs in the fall have until June 12, 2015 to register for summer school (all new students who wish to enroll in summer pre-k or New Work for Credit must register by May 8). FEES AND REFUNDS Payment in full is due at the time of registration. Checks or money orders should be made payable to Arlington Public Schools. Cash and credit cards are not accepted. Registration fees for pre-k through grade 12 strengthening courses are generally non-refundable (the only exceptions are for secondary students who either passed a credit-bearing class during the school year and no longer need to take the class in Summer School, or who registered for a New Work class and need to be changed to a make-up and strengthening class). Refunds may be granted (less a $100 fee) for elementary enrichment and high school New Work, but only if: a student is ill (with a doctor s note); there is a death in the immediate family; or there is a transfer of residence outside of Arlington. The last day to request a refund is July 1, Requests should be submitted to the Summer School office. GENERAL INFORMATION REDUCED FEES Reduced fees are available to current Arlington resident students who meet certain income eligibility requirements. To request a reduction in fees, a completed 2015 Application for a Reduction in Summer School Fees must be submitted along with the summer school registration form. ATTENDANCE REGULATIONS Consistent attendance in summer school is critical at all grade levels. In the middle school and high school programs, neither grade nor credit is awarded for any class in which a student has more than three absences. In Summer School there are no excused absences, even in the case of a court appearance or death in the family. If a student is tardy three times, the tardies will count as one absence. Students who are more than 20 minutes late to class or who leave more than 20 minutes before class is over will be marked absent. Students who exceed three absences will be unable to continue in the summer program and will be withdrawn. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is provided only within the assigned summer school attendance area for all Arlington County students. Please note that transportation for secondary programs will only be provided at the beginning and end of the day; there will be no mid-day runs, and students will not be allowed to stay at school if they do not have two classes. Elementary students must live at least one mile from the summer school site, and secondary students must live one and a half miles from the summer school site, to qualify for transportation. Bus stops and additional transportation information will be sent to students by U.S. mail on June 30. Parents must arrange for younger children to be escorted to and from the bus stop. Questions about buses should be directed to the Transportation Office at FOOD SERVICE A healthy breakfast will be available for purchase at all APS Summer School sites. Students may use their lunch accounts to buy breakfast. Students who received free or reduced-cost meals during the school year are also eligible to receive free or reduced-cost meals during the summer. 2 SUMMER SCHOOL

11 ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PROGRAMS The APS elementary summer strengthening programs are considered to be an extension of the current school year.they offer students a chance to reinforce their skills in both mathematics and language arts. The strengthening courses are designed specifically for those students who may need additional time and exposure to grade level standards. Only students who are failing a class or who previously failed an SOL exam should enroll in these courses. Program locations, times and dates are listed below. Detailed information on these and the elementary enrichment programs are listed on the following pages. Parents and students are encouraged to discuss possible areas of study and consult with their teachers and counselors in order to make appropriate course selections and register by the proper deadline. Fees for all strengthening programs are non-refundable. Partial refunds are available for enrichment programs under limited circumstances (see page 2, Fees and Refunds.) ELEMENTARY SCHOOL DISCOVERY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SUMMER SCHOOL Current APS students who are slated to attend Discovery in the fall will attend the Summer School site for their current school. Registration forms for these students should be turned in at their current school location. New APS students who will enter Discovery as kindergarteners in September are eligible to attend the Jamestown Summer School Pre-K program. STRENGTHENING: SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS Summer school experiences for students who receive special education services are offered to students in pre-kindergarten through grade five. Registration is limited to students who were enrolled full time in APS during the school year. Summer school special education programs are not designed to be duplications of the regular school year programs. Although students with Extended School Year services (ESY) do not pay registration fees, they must submit a registration form by the relevant deadline. INDIVIDUAL SCHOOL-BASED SPECIAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS, GRADES K-5 At each elementary math/language arts site, resource services will be available for students who receive this type of support during the school year. However, special education resource services during summer school will not be identical to the IEP services provided during the year. Summer school resource teachers ensure that accommodations and modifications are in place and provide direct/group instruction as needed. The Outdoor Lab summer camp provides students with the opportunity to explore the natural world at their own pace. The highly qualified staff will safely guide campers through various activities that may include aquatic studies, natural history, and nature s supermarket. This exciting summer program is conducted at the Phoebe Hall-Knipling Outdoor Laboratory near Warrenton, Virginia. Students are transported to the Outdoor Lab on Monday morning and returned to Arlington on Friday afternoon of the same week. Platform tents, meals and snacks are provided. Tent mates will be assigned by the Camp Director to ensure campers have the opportunity to make new friends. Students are provided opportunities to explore the natural world through focused activities of their own choosing and self-directed free time activities. This exciting and popular summer camp is conducted at the Phoebe Hall-Knipling Outdoor Laboratory near Warrenton, Virginia. Students are transported to the Outdoor Lab on Monday morning and returned to Arlington on Friday afternoon of the same week. Platform tents, meals and snacks are provided.
