12 Progetto NEXT FP6 Financial Guidelines Name Forfaiting Typology Debt capital 1. Short description Forfaiting can be considered as the extension of factoring in international business relationships between an exporting and an importing company. A forfaiting company (Forfaiter) discounts to the exporter the credits due by the importer with cash payment. The discount timing is decided on the base of the contract between importer and exporter and on the specific agreements between Forfaiter and exporter (the duration is usually no longer than 5 years). Generally, a trustee bank is necessary to guarantee for the importer (through an approval) and to act as his interface towards the Forfaiter. The discount can be: Pro-soluto the exporter isn t responsible for the payment; Pro-solvendo or "improper forf aiting" - the exporter is responsible for the payment: if the foreign buyer doesn t pay, the exporter has to pay. 2. Simplified organisational model Exporter Commercial contract Delivery of goods Hand Over Documents Importer Bank loan; Trade credit; Overdraft; Leasing (financial and operative); Factoring; Forfaiting; Stand-by lines of credit; Commercial paper; Syndicated lending; Bank advances; Project financing; Bonds; Venture leasing; Gives a Forfaiting Delivery of Payment on shipment at Guarantee contract documents a discount Repays at maturity Presents document for payment Guaranteeing Forfaiter bank Pays at maturity Example: A foreign company ask the Italian supplier to pay 4 months after the good delivery. The Italian enterprise call the financial actor. Italian com pany: it produces durable consumer goods, it has several possible customers in the foreign Country asking deferred payments, longer than the usual 30 days. Foreign company: limited liability company, positively evaluated by the bank, it buys only it the payment can be deferred for 4 months. The financial actor evaluates the company request and it is well disposed to discount the credit. The steps are: Request from the Italian company (today), Offer (tomorrow), Offer acceptance, documents presentation, Supply (5 days). The span of time from the first request and the funds supply is about 30 days. 3.
