1 Hospital and Department Overview Brigham and Women s Hospital, located in Boston s Longwood Medical Area, is a 793-bed nonprofit teaching affiliate of Harvard Medical School and a founding member of Partners HealthCare, Inc. The Department of Pharmacy provides services to inpatient, outpatient, and satellite clinic locations throughout the Metro Boston area. The department is regarded as an innovator and leader in medication safety technology, clinical information systems, and clinical pharmacy services at the local and national level. Brigham and Women s Hospital PGY-2 Critical Care Pharmacy Residency General Information The Department of Pharmacy at Brigham and Women s Hospital offers a specialized residency in critical care pharmacy practice. This one-year program is designed to provide advanced training in the area of critical care pharmacotherapy and research. Program Fundamentals The primary emphasis of the critical care residency is to develop clinicians with expertise in pharmacotherapy of critical care patient management. Over the course of the year, the resident will gain experience in the management of critical care patients, lead a comprehensive research project, strengthen his or her communication skills through formal and informal presentations and interactions with other healthcare providers in a variety of settings, and participate in critical care and pharmacy-related interdisciplinary hospital committees. In addition, the resident will enhance his or her teaching skills by precepting pharmacy practice residents and students on critical care rotations. 3 Expectations of the Resident The resident is expected to plan, design, and submit two manuscripts to peer-reviewed journals, including one original research publication and one therapeutic review, clinical consult, clinical update, or the like. The resident is expected to plan, design, and complete at least one major research project with guidance from preceptors and abstract submission to Eastern States Residency Conference and a professional organization meeting. The resident is expected to complete at least one secondary research, local guideline or policy, and drug information project according to departmental needs. The resident is expected to participate in rotational projects according to preceptor assignments. The resident is expected to submit a clinical pearl for consideration at the Council of Boston Teaching Hospitals Pharmacy Grand Rounds and the New England Critical Care Symposium. Expectations The resident is expected to author one Drug Administration Guideline. The resident is expected to contribute to departmental staff education through a CEU presentation to the Department of Pharmacy staff, daily clinical meeting presentations, two case conference presentations, and participation in the departmental journal surveillance program. The resident is expected to contribute to multidisciplinary staff education through critical care topic education to fellows, residents, interns, and nurses on pain, agitation, and delirium management, glucose control, and therapeutic hypothermia. The resident is expected to participate in internal journal clubs within the department and in MICU/SICU Noon Conference and external journal clubs through SCCM s Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacology Section upon invitation. The resident is expected to actively participate on at least one institutional multidisciplinary committee. The resident is expected to precept and teach pharmacy students and PGY-1 residents.
