2 Organization University of Utah Health Care is an academic medical center and a part of the University of Utah. University Hospitals & Clinics (UUHC) is a 654- bed clinical enterprise that ranks among the finest academic medical centers in the United States, and is comprised of University Hospital, Huntsman Cancer Hospital, University Neuropsychiatric Institute, Moran Eye Center, University Orthopaedic Center, and ten community clinic sites. Fellowship Opportunity UUHC is offering a one-year Administrative Fellowship that will begin in June/July The goal of the fellowship is to cultivate leaders in the field of academic healthcare by fostering close working relationships between the fellow and senior leadership team while exposing the fellow to a diverse array of operational activities. The Administrative Fellow will participate in the choice of fellowship projects, rotations, and focus of their work. Areas of opportunity for project work include, but are not limited to: operations, marketing/public affairs, customer service, physician relations, strategic planning, new business development, quality improvement, compliance, financial analysis, contract negotiations, organizational development, tele-health strategies, and employee relations. One of the most valuable experiences I gained during my fellowship was the opportunity to be mentored by UUHC Executives who were actively engaged mentors over the course of the year. I was integrated into the Senior Leadership team and given opportunities to work on current projects valuable to the organization. 3 The value of the fellowship is the level of engagement in the fellow s success that is demonstrated by David and the senior executive team. Senior leaders view the fellow as a member of the team and a valuable source of expertise in the efforts here at University of Utah Health Care. Nate Gladwell, RN, MHA Director of Telemedicine Administrative Fellow The preceptor for the administrative fellowship program is David Entwistle, Chief Executive Officer of UUHC. The preceptor serves in an advisory role that pertains to: Preparation of strategic plans and initiatives Gaining exposure to the day-to-day operations of an academic, tertiary care medical center Providing experience in planning and system development Developing and enhancing leadership skills Ensuring a positive and rewarding experience About the Preceptor for University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics David Entwistle has been Chief Executive Officer at UUHC since February Previously, Entwistle worked at University of Wisconsin Hospitals & Clinics, and served as Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer at University of Wisconsin Hospital & Clinics until January Prior to that time he was Vice President of Professional Services and Joint Operations at City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California. While in that position, he concurrently served as President and CEO of Oncology Management Services, Inc., an oncology management service organization of City of Hope. Entwistle earned a Bachelor s Degree in Health Sciences from Brigham Young University and a Master s in Health Services Administration from Arizona State University. He completed a postgraduate administrative fellowship at University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. 2

4 Selection Process Candidates should be currently enrolled in or have recently completed an MHA/ MBA/MHSA/MPA/MPH at an accredited graduate program and should exhibit the following qualities: Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines Excellent written and verbal communication skills Self-motivated and teamwork-oriented Interest in the management and operation of an academic medical center The deadline for the fellowship application is September 19th, The following items are required to be considered for the fellowship: Resume and cover letter Personal statement of interest in pursuing an Administrative Fellowship at UUHC (1 page maximum) Three letters of recommendation (at least one from a current or past employer) Official graduate school transcript from an accredited program All materials should be POSTMARKED no later than September 19th, 2014 and addressed to: The University of Utah Hospital Administration Attn: Joe Vance 50 North Medical Drive, W1200 Salt Lake City, UT For additional information, please contact Joe Vance, Administrative Fellow, at joe.vance@hsc.utah.edu. 7 Frequently Asked Questions How many applications are received in a typical year? This is the sixth year University of Utah Health Care will be sponsoring a fellowship. University of Utah Health Care receives applications each year. What can candidates expect during the interviewing process? Following review of the submitted application material, selected candidates will first have a screening phone interview in mid-october. Following phone interviews, a handful of candidates will be invited to Salt Lake City for a second round of interviews onsite with the senior leadership team, providing the opportunity to understand the fellow s role in the organization and be exposed to the culture of the organization. What are the fellow s salary and benefits? The fellow is paid an annual stipend competitive with other fellowship programs. In addition, the fellow receives benefits, vacation, and access to University of Utah facilities available to employees. Will the fellow have exposure to all levels of University of Utah Health Care? The fellow will have the opportunity to work in all areas of University of Utah Hospitals & Clinics, with additional exposure to other areas of University of Utah Health Care. Do we accept international applicants? Yes, however, we do not sponsor visas. I look back on my fellowship with immense appreciation! That one year observing and learning from incredible senior leaders and frontline staff, managing projects, and building relationships across the organization will be invaluable throughout my career. Most importantly, I gained a stronger appreciation of the vast infrastructures, processes, and resources required to best care for our patients.
