16 If you are planning to move to the Memphis area or if you are just looking to visit, you will soon find that Southern hospitality has not been lost in the cosmopolitan growth of the Mid-South. Memphis is unique in that we have found a balance between the amenities, diversity and tolerance of a big city while keeping true to the comfort of our small town history. Memphis Cultural Facilities/Activities Music Memphis is the home of the Blues and the Birthplace of Rock 'n' Roll. There is more live music in this city than in many communities twice its size. If you are looking for what's happening in the near future, check out either the Commercial Appeal or the Memphis Flyer Web sites. To capitalize on the area's rich musical legacy, Memphis and Shelby County government leaders formed a music commission that will work to nurture new talent and recruit music industry business to Memphis. Memphis is also home to the Blues Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving the tradition of Blues Music as well as the history of the genre. Memphis is home to one of seven National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences (NARAS) districts in the U.S. There has also been considerable effort in providing a comfortable environment for the Motion Picture Industry in the Memphis Metro area, due in large part to the work of the Memphis and Shelby County Film Commission.
