White PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: The Graduate Programs in Counseling incorporate the Mission and Philosophy of the College in their own statement of Mission and Philosophy. The various specialties in Counseling nurture students into self-developing, competent professionals who can contribute to their communities both personally and professionally. The programs emphasize the whole person s development of spiritual, intellectual, cultural, and material values necessary to live responsibly, respect individuality, seek truth and peace, and foster justice in society. The programs emphasize the delivery of services through a sociocultural, systemic, developmental, wellness perspective. The Graduate Programs implement their philosophy into their mission through measurable objectives for teaching, research, and public service. Demonstrate the ability to conceptualize, design, implement and evaluate a comprehensive school counseling program 80% on binder ASSESSMENTS: Assessment 1: Social and Cultural Foundations Presentation Outcomes: 4 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the presentation. in COU 602 Social and Cultural Foundations are required to present on a selected cultural group, including an informative lecture, interview, and encouragement for classroom interaction and participation. This presentation is scored on a. Assessment 2: Ethical and Legal Considerations Case Studies Outcomes: 3 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the case study. in COU 609 Professional Orientation and Ethics are required to evaluate case studies throughout the semester, determining potential ethical and legal complications and citing relevant documentation to support these conclusions. These evaluations are collectively scored on a. Assessment 3: Counseling Research Project Outcomes: 8 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the research. in COU 610 Research Methods and Program Evaluation are required to propose a research project relevant to the field of counseling, submitted for the approval of the Human Subjects Protection Review Board, and then gather the appropriate data over the course of a semester which are then compiled into a mock submission. This project is scored on a. Assessment 4: Clinical Diagnosis Presentation Outcomes: 6 & 7 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the presentation. in COU 615 Diagnosis/Treatment of Mental Disorders are required to present on a disorder selected from the most current edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This presentation is scored on a.
6 Page 6 of 10 Assessment 5: School Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 & 9 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the video. in COU 623 Foundations of School Counseling are required to create a comprehensive school counseling program for elementary, middle or high school with all relevant information organized in a binder for presentation and submission. This binder is scored on a. Assessment 6: Crisis Intervention Plan Outcomes: 5 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the proposal. in COU 625 Crisis Intervention are required to submit a proposal for a crisis intervention plan to be evaluated by the instructor. This plan is scored on a. Assessment 7: Techniques Video Role Play Outcomes: 2, 4, 5 & 6 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the video. in COU 616 Techniques in Counseling are required to complete ten videotaped role plays simulating counseling sessions. These role plays are evaluated by the instructor throughout the semester and collectively scored on a. Assessment 8: Clinical Outcomes: 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 & 7 Benchmark: successfully score 80% on the clinical. in COU 699 Practicum are required to acquire a minimum of 40 direct hours of client contact at the Thomas E. Chambers Counseling and Training Center located on campus at Our Lady of Holy Cross College. These counseling sessions are videotaped and stored securely on campus for review by clinical supervisors. Clinical skills demonstrated in these videos, as well as participation in both individual and group supervision sessions throughout the semester, are evaluated and overall clinical performance is scored on a. Assessment 9: Oral Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, & 7 Benchmark: successfully pass the examination in their final semester are required to pass an oral comprehensive examination in which graduate faculty evaluate the students on their general knowledge of a selected counseling theory as well as its applications to a case study. This examination is scored on a by each member of that student s examination committee. These scores are discussed by committee members and the student is passed if the committee members reach such a consensus. who fail to pass the oral comprehensive examination are not allowed to graduate, must register for an additional semester of internship, and must re-take the examination on the next available date it is offered.
7 Page 7 of 10 Assessment 10: Counselor Outcomes: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 & 8 Benchmark: successfully pass the examination in their final semester must take the Counselor (CPCE). The CPCE is a national examination in the form of a four hour written exam and is utilized as an exit exam within the department. The passing score for the exam is determined based on the national mean of CPCE scores, provided by the National Board of Certified Counselors. who fail to pass the examination are not allowed to graduate, must register for an additional semester of internship, and must re-take the examination on the next available date it is offered. Assessment 11: Surveys Course evaluations, exit surveys and post-graduation surveys are not tied to specific outcomes but are utilized to acquire qualitative data on perceptions of the program and indicate any areas of growth that may require program modifications. LOCATION: Department of Counseling and Behavioral Sciences DISSEMINATION/DISCUSSION: This information is disseminated and discussed in department faculty meetings, Graduate Council, and general college faculty meetings. It is reported to SACS, CACREP, and the general community via a link on the OLHCC web page. Results: The summer semester is included as several of the courses in the Graduate Program in Counseling are taught primarily or exclusively at that time.
