CDK is founded on the work of earlier initiatives devoted to the development of independent activities and the publication of samizdat magazines before Major goals of CDK are: to contribute to the creation and evolution of democratic political culture, to emphasize indispensability of Christian values which rank among the fundamental sources of European civilization, and to highlight signi cance of interrelationships of political, economic and cultural areas. In its views on politics and society, CDK subscribes to conservative and liberal beliefs; in religious issues it prefers ecumenical approach. Its activities focus on the Czech issues as well as on the European one and since 2000 it has devoted part of its energy to projects in countries which are undergoing democratic transition. Organizational Structure CDK comprises two relatively independent yet cooperating institutes: the Institute for Politics and Culture (Institut pro politiku a kulturu, IPK) and the Institute for Christian Studies (Institut křesťanských studií, IKS). Its outcome in the 2011 was, apart from the rich publication activities, mainly the existence of three independent journals: Kontexty, Revue Politika, Církevní dějiny. CDK is run by a four-member Board which elects the Chair and CDK s Director. Apart from the Chair and CDK s Director, Directors of both Institutes are members of the Board. e Board s decisions are carried out by the Executive Director. 5 ACTIVITIES 2011 In 2011 CDK published three journals, 20 books, organized lectures and seminars and focused on the production of expert and media outputs. Journals In 2011 CDK published three journals - Kontexty, Revue Politika and Církevní dějiny. Kontexty Kontexty is a two monthly cultural journal which has been published by the CDK since However, it follows-up to the twenty years tradition of publishing its own literary journal (revue Proglas was established in 1990). One can nd prominent Czech authors who contribute to the journal as the writer Pavel Švanda, dramatist Milan Uhde, poet Petr Motýl, translator Anna Kareninová, writer Ota Filip, or literary historian and translator Ivana Ryčlová. e aim of the Editorial Board is to show the mutually enriching interconnection of the cultural and social level, to focus on themes as literature and society, literature and politics, literature and totalitarianism, art and society, art and politics etc. Main focus is also on the mutual connection of literature and other elds of art. Poetry has a large space in Kontexty. e readers appreciate not only a careful selection of texts and a high quality of permanent and occasional contributors, but also an attempt to present each issue with an original piece of art and text about less known artists. e journal was published with the support of City of Brno and Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic in Six issues of Vol. III (XXII) were released. Editors: Petr Fiala, Jiří Hanuš, František Mikš (Editor in Chief ) Executive Editor: Lenka Váchová Revue Politika Revue Politika is a social-political revue which has been publish only on-line since 2009 on Its Editorial Board acknowledges a conservative-liberal opinion position and its aim is to contribute to the discussion about current social, political and cultural problems. Prominent Czech and foreign authors contribute to the Revue (scientists, publicists, politicians, writers) and current political analysis, essays, interviews, studies and translations of the most interesting texts from foreign papers are regularly published. In 2011, 12 Issues (and one double issue), Vol. IX were released. Revue has unique hits every months. 6 Církevní dějiny Církevní dějiny is an expert journal which focuses on the history of the church in the Czech lands and in the world. Its main interest is the history of Christianity within the perspective of today s historiographic methods. Every year, two issues of the journal are published and include high quality, interesting and readable articles. e Editorial Board attempts to present a variety of genres (studies, shorter articles, essays, documents, memoirs, reviews, etc.), to mediate domestic and foreign texts and to present an independent and ecumenical character of the journal. 7 Projects In 2011, CDK implemented several long term projects: Educational Institute for Democracy and Civil Society in Eastern Ukraine second year. With support of Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Long term project focused on forming Ukrainian civil society and young people from the Kharkiv region. Prominent Czech experts on democracy and civil society visit Kharkiv to give lectures and seminars. CDK organizes 10day study visit in the Czech Republic for most successful students. The Project Quaestiones Quodlibetales Quaestiones Quodlibetales is the title of an exceptional series that creates a space for discussions on current and interesting topics from the areas of history, religion, philosophy, and art. Four volumes are published every year. In 2011 the following titles were published: Phillipe Nemo: Co je Západ?; Ivana Noble, Jiří Hanuš a kol.: Křesťanství a romantismus; Roger Scruton: O potřebnosti národů; Pavel Hošek: Židovská teologie křesťanství. The Project History and Culture CDK systematically introduces to the expert public current trends and research methods and results in cultural history, particularly in relation to religion, theology, sociology, political science and cultural anthropology. The Project Politics and Religion CDK s goal is to go beyond the existing fragmented research of politics and religion in individual disciplines and to attempt to create a platform for interdisciplinary research and an open space for the transparent presentation of results. Symposium European Union, Euro and the economic crisis: common interests of the Czech Republic and Poland in the context of the Polish EU Council presidency Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej was the cooperating partner in the project which was supported by Czech-Polish Forum. e main goal of the project was to clarify positions of two Central European countries, to link two separated streams of expert and ideological thinking in relation to the EU Czech and Polish into one. e essays of prominent expert from both countries related to the European integration issues, which reacted to one another, were published in Revue Politika, Kontexty and on the Ośrodek Myśli Politycznej website. Moreover, book called Bezpłodny sojusz: Polska i Czechy w Unii Europejskiej edited by Ondřej Krutílek and Artur Wolka was published in Poland. CDK Annual Report

8 Events The second year of the project titled Educational Institute for Democracy and Civil Society in Eastern Ukraine e second year of the project titled Educational Institute for Democracy and Civil Society in Eastern Ukraine started with a ceremony in the auditorium of the Kharkiv National University of Economics on 24 October e project followed the one with the same title, Educational Institute for Democracy and Civil Society in Eastern Ukraine, which took place in and was also nanced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. Among the guests at the opening ceremony in March were apart from CDK representatives and the non-pro t organization Union of Young Europeans, General Consul of the Czech Republic in Donetsk, Antonín Murgaš, and the head of Kharkiv s International Department, Viktor Rud and Vladimir Yermachenko, vice rector at the Kharkiv National University of Economics. More than 160 students and teachers from nine local universities participated in 2011 project. ere were 12 lectures in March divided in three days (more than 20 hours of intensive education). In May and September two similar seminars took place. Practical seminar ended the educational cycle in November 2011 where experts on the project management Veronika Štěrbová (Eurovisions a.s.), Sabina Dvořáková (DEMAS), and Pavel Loutocký (Secretary of Brno City Hall) participated. Practical seminar helped students to get a feedback on their own projects which were in English and Russian. e project ideas included: internet education for seniors, hippotherapy, ecological education, an incubator for start-up companies, youth in the countryside, the creation of an internet website providing information about the tax system, and a small business association. Most students had found in advance how they could implement their projects and even contacted potential local participants (university, city, etc.). CKD will follow these activities. We believe some will be implemented in the future. Fifty students who met the criteria were granted certi cates in the lifelong study program accredited by the Czech Ministry of Education Of the Czech Republic. Five most successful students participated in 10days study visit in Brno. Study Program in Burma CDK cooperates on the management of a two-year project called Burma Foreign Affairs and Transition Study Program. is project takes place from January 2011 through December 2012 at the ai-burma border and is co- nanced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic. e following donors are also involved in this project: the National Endowment for Democracy, the Open Society Foundations, and the Norwegian Rafto Foundation. e coordinator is in touch with several Burmese organizations (HREIB, ALTSEAN-Burma, Burma Partnership, AAPPB, Burma Fund, ND Burma, and EarthRights International School) and foreign advocacy partners (People in Need, Burma Campaign UK, World Movement for Democracy, and Human Rights Watch). e aim of this project is to train sixteen selected representatives of the Burma opposition and civic groups in issues of human rights, political science, and international relations. e training also focuses on issues such as communication, politics, and negotiation. e training lasts for ten months. e program consists of all-day lessons and distance lectures. e new study guide on transition is being prepared in cooperation with CDK experts. e distance lectures started in May 2011 as videoconference, each lasted 70 minutes. In the second half of November 2011, CDK representative spent one week in the ai cities of Chiang Mai and Mae Sot where he lectured at two seminars organized within this project. Conference Ukraine on its road to European integration CDK and Union of Young Europeans organized a Czech-Ukrainian student conference at Faculty of Social Studies of Masaryk University called Ukraine on its road to European integration on 6 th January e conference was part of broader study trip for Ukrainian students during which they visited Budapest, Vienna, Prague, Brno, Karlovy Vary, Dresden, and Krakow. Among speakers were Petra Kuchyňková (FSS MU, CDK), Oleg Lesnyj (Ukrainian Meridian), Kateřina Hloušková (CDK), and Jaroslav Pešek. Euro versus Crown: When will it burst? On 17 th October 2011 CDK organized a conference called Euro versus Crown: When will it burst?. e event was under aegis of the Committee on EU Affairs, the Senate of the Czech Republic and took place in the main hall of Valdštejn Palace. Number of personalities who are professionally interested in the topic attended the conference: Miroslav Singer (Governor of the Czech National Bank), Luděk Sefzig (Cchair of the Committee on EU Affairs, the Senate), Pavel Mertlík (main economist in Reiffeisenbank), Hynek Fajmon (MEP for ODS), Jan Mládek (economist and Chair in Fontes Renum), Pavel Kohout (economist and Director for strategy in Partners). Expert outputs Analysis of the EU legislation and monitoring of the EU politics Since 2004 a department for EU legislative and politics analysis has worked under the Institute for Politics and Culture of CDK. It closely cooperates with MEP Hynek Fajmon. is department wrote 11 regular monitoring reports of the EU legislation in 2011 (monthly, during the summer holidays the monitoring is for two months). e monitoring is a demanded product by the European and Czech members of parliament, politicians and experts readers receive it every month. is department has also published several texts on the EU topics. Seminar about democratic transition in Egypt CDK representative Stanislav Balík attended in May 2011 by request of Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs seminar aimed at sharing the experience with the transition of Visegrad countries organized by the Czech Embassy in Cairo. He presented his text on Czech democratic transition in judiciary. CDK Annual Report

10 Media outputs Apart from the texts published in CDK s journals, CDK s employees published texts in other media in 2011: Mladá fronta Dnes, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, weekly Re ex, Týden, South-Moravian daily Rovnost, Euroskop website. ey also participated as experts in programs in the Czech TV and the Czech Radio. 10 CDK Annual Report 2011
