2 International Relations / International Studies / European Studies Admissions Policy Typical offers for our International Studies courses are ABB-BBB at A level. Although our entry requirements are stated in terms of three A levels, we encourage applications from students with suitable alternative qualifications including Access courses and the International Baccalaureate. Please see page 43 or contact our Admissions team for details. Teaching and Assessment Aside from lectures, we value lively discussion or debate-based seminar teaching. You prepare privately, then meet in small groups with your teacher to exchange, debate and refine ideas generated by the preceding lectures. Career Prospects International Studies degrees equip you well for working for international and non-governmental organisations, the civil and diplomatic service, European institutions and business, the media, or going into further postgraduate study and teaching. Our Careers Centre also organises a very successful, one-day event on Working in Politics. Our graduates work in a wide variety of professions. Research Areas We boast a lively group of staff who are all active researchers, publishing in international academic contexts what we research and our courses are continually being modified in the light of changing ideas. Our research focuses on international relations; US foreign policy; conflict and security; the Middle East; Russia and Eastern Europe; democratisation; religious fundamentalism; comparative European politics and European integration and international organisations. We house the Centre for Research in European Studies (CREST), which organises conferences and a guest seminar series in which our students take an active part. The School also publishes a series of working papers. Flexibility and Choice Our degree programmes are some of the most flexible on offer. Building on a strong foundation in your first year you progress to choose from a wide range of options, allowing you to customise your degree according to your interests and career plans. Language learning can be combined with your studies, if desired. Study Abroad Through the ERASMUS exchange programme students are able to spend a semester abroad studying in a European university, subject to approval by the School. While some of our European partners offer limited teaching in English, students will be expected to be competent in a European language. Exchanges with partner universities in the USA and Australia are also available. 3 International Relations / International Studies / European Studies International Relations and Politics BA International Relations and Politics UCAS code L290 Some of the most important political debates are those about international relations. Is it right to intervene in the politics of other countries? How ought we to respond to the threat of global warming? Is America too powerful? How big a threat is international terrorism? What should be done to improve international security? How much power do multinational corporations have? Will China overtake the US as the major superpower? These are the sorts of questions that arise when studying a course such as International Relations and Politics. It allows you to think about and explore the causes of conflict in the Middle East, for example and to assess attempts to resolve it. This course, in short, gives you the opportunity to study those forces and issues which are shaping the contemporary world. Hugo Chavez, the controversial president of Venezuela, renowned for his flamboyant public speaking style. The first year is structured so as to ensure that study and other key skills are acquired to enable you to benefit most fully from the rest of the course. Firm foundations of knowledge are laid out in respect of political theory, government and international relations and modern history. Compulsory modules may include: Social and Political Theory; A Globalising World; Introduction to International Relations; and Introduction to Contemporary Politics. You will also choose from a range of options which may include: Introduction to American Studies; Economics and Society; Introduction to Modern History; Themes in Modern History; and Introduction to Philosophy. The programme in the second and third year is designed to draw upon a range of modules in the areas of international relations and politics offered in the School of Political, Social and International Studies. The second year modules, International Politics Since 1945, International Organisations, and Democratic Theory, are compulsory and are designed to provide a core foundation of knowledge of the international system since the Second World War and in the main traditions in the history of democratic thought. These may include: Politics in the USA; Russian Politics; Britain and Europe; Terrorism; Power and Society; International Security and Conflict Resolution; Introduction to the European Union; Introduction to Politics of the Middle East. 4 International Relations / International Studies / European Studies International Relations and Modern History BA International Relations and Modern History UCAS code LV2C Special entry requirements: grade B in A level History This degree, taught jointly with the School of History, is designed for students who are interested in exploring and understanding contemporary international relations. Looking at the contemporary world, two things are apparent. The first is that our world is increasingly shaped, not by domestic politics, but by international politics and by global connections between nations. The second is that the current state of our world and our societies is the product not of the moment, but of events and processes that have occurred over time. Studying international relations and modern history enables you to make sense of the new global order. During the first year, you will gain a sound grounding in the core elements of political theory, international relations, government and modern history which explain the forces and events that have shaped the contemporary world. During the second year, you will be able to specialise in those areas that interest you the most, such as: US politics, South East Asia, the European Union, Russia or the ideological underpinnings which inform contemporary international relations. During the third year you will have the opportunity to engage in independent research by working on a dissertation. You are also encouraged to consider the possibility of spending a semester abroad. Your first year will include the modules: Introduction to Modern History; Themes in Modern History; Social and Political Theory; Introduction to Contemporary Politics; A Globalising World; and Introduction to Internal Relations. These will provide the foundation to your degree. In your second year you take International Politics Since 1945 and choose from a range of options which may include: The Rise and Fall of British Power; Conflict and Consensus; Modern Germany; The Holocaust; Introduction to Spanish History; Modern Spain; Imperial Russian and Soviet History, ; Modern Italy, ; Politics in the USA; Russian Politics; Germany: From Nazism to New Nation; Democratic Theory; International Organisations; Britain and Europe; Terrorism; International Security and Conflict Resolution; Introduction to the European Union. You will choose your modules from a range of options which may include: The Clash of Fundamentalisms; Power over the Pacific; Russia in Disraeli; Sex, Lies and Reputations; The Third Reich; Britain and the End of Empire; Communism and Nationalism in Yugoslavia; Nationalism in Central Europe: The Hapsburg Monarchy ; Politics of the Middle East; Stalin and Stalinism: The USSR ; Chamberlain, Churchill and Appeasement, ; and Liberalism in the Age of Cobden and Gladstone.
