2 Dear friends, dear colleagues, it is my pleasure to welcome you in the historical centre of Olomouc and its university. The university belongs to the academic old stuff, it has been founded by the Austrian emperor Maximilian II. in In the very early beginnings, it was formed by the faculties of theology, arts and philosophy, which were later joined by the faculties of law and medicine. The original university buildings were destroyed by fire in The new building was the very same in which are we sitting now; it has been constructed between 1666 and 1668 and the university moved into it in Adjacent to the new university building is the church of St. Mary of the Snow, an extraordinary example of majestic Baroque architecture, and the largest university church all over the world. It is worth of a visit, particularly in the evening during the students mass. Olomouc is, beside the University, the seat of the Moravian Archbishop. This conjuction filled the town with numerous Baroque sacral buildings, designed by Johann Erna or Domenico Martinelli. The Archbishop s Palace was at the time of Hungarian revolt the seat of the Austrian Emperor (probably due to its long distance from the Hungarian border...). The current Archbishop s palace is a beautiful example of late Baroque palace design; the original one, built in 12th century, has been recently excavated and can be visited in the basement of Archdiocesan Museum. There are many other sights worth seeing, so I hope you will find a time to stroll down through the streets and Christmas market on both historical squares.
