Keynote Presentation: Tracy Kettering Ph.D., BCBA-D Putting the Analysis Back in Applied Behavior Analysis: Conducting Systematic Assessments and Treatment Evaluations Abstract: Although the benefits of utilizing functional analyses in applied settings are often described (e.g., Hanley, 2012; Iwata & Dozier, 2008), a systematic approach to treatment evaluation has received less attention. This presentation will focus on the need for behavior analysts to use systematic methods to evaluate potential treatments when working with individuals with challenging behavior to increase effectiveness and efficiency. The potential benefits of utilizing functional analysis and treatment assessments will be described, along with recommendations for doing so across various treatment settings (e.g., school, in-home). Examples of systematic functional analysis and treatment evaluations in various settings will be provided throughout the presentation. Learning Objectives 1. Describe how treatment evaluation can increase effectiveness and efficiency. 2. Describe systematic methods to evaluate potential treatments. 3. Describe methods for conducting treatment assessments across various treatment settings.
NJABA Workgroups at Lunch The field of Applied Behavior Analysis is thriving and provides opportunities for growth as well as challenges. NJABA is here to help its members make the most of these opportunities and navigate the challenges in coordinated manner. In response to feedback from members, NJABA has created topical workgroups as way to better serve its members and our organizational goals. Let s work together to enhance the practice of behavior analysis across service domains throughout the State. The NJABA Board and Workgroup Leadership Committees are excited to offer you the opportunity to join fellow behavior analysts on topics of your interest. Workgroups are forming now, and we invite you to be a part of them! Join us at designated locations for the following workgroups: Adult Services Early Intervention Insurance Provider Public Schools We look forward to seeing you there!
Afternoon Workshop 1: Melanie Pellechia, Ph.D., BCBA, NCSP Strategies for Supporting the Implementation of Behavioral Interventions in Schools Abstract: The implementation of evidence-based interventions for children with autism in classrooms can be a difficult task for both teachers and consultants working in school settings. Yet, children with autism receive the majority of their treatment through their educational programming. This presentation will provide participants with an overview of classroom-based interventions for students with autism and strategies to improve their adoption and implementation within schools. Participants will also discuss barriers related to improving treatment integrity within schools, and effective consultation strategies for addressing those barriers in order to improve treatment integrity in classrooms. Learning Objectives 1. Describe classroom-based interventions for students with autism. 2. Describe strategies to improve the adoption and implementation of classroom-based interventions. 3. State barriers related to improving treatment integrity within schools. 4. Describe effective consultation strategies for addressing barriers to improving treatment integrity.
Afternoon Workshop 2: Chris Schaub, M.S.Ed., BCBA Promoting behavior change after brain injury: Considering all components of the four term contingency Abstract: Sensitivity to contingencies in the brain injured population can be complicated by an array of variables secondary to an injury. The onset of pain, sleep disruption, medication trials, vestibular impairment, etc impact motivating operations and fundamentally influence sensitivity to contingencies. Alternatively, or concurrently, residual disorientation and confusion can impact an individual s ability to accurately describe their own situation or behavior, and in still other situations there can be competing contingencies such as access to compensation or controlled substances. When delivering rehabilitation services to individuals with neurobehavioral sequelae it is critical to assess and identify the presence of these variables and to develop a comprehensive, integrated and individualized treatment plan within the framework of the four term contingency, taking into account motivating operations and operating contingencies across multiple temporal scales. The role of behavior analysis in developing treatment plans that promote self-management of behavior will be discussed, as well as promoting behavior change for those with limited capacity for self-management. The concept of awareness as described in the brain injury literature will be discussed in relation to the behavior analytic concept of self-management. Case studies will be reviewed and discussed to illustrate key points. Learning Objectives 1. Identify motivating operations that may influence behavior in the brain-injured population. 2. Identify other variables and competing contingencies that influence the ability of an individual with brain injury to accurately describe their own behavior. 3. Describe how self-management strategies can be used for the brain-injured population and how to approach treatment for individuals with limited capacity for self-management. 4. Describe the concept of awareness as in relation to self-management.
Afternoon Workshop 3: Chris Perrin, Ph.D., BCBA-D & Tracy Kettering, Ph.D., BCBA-D Assessing and Treating Responses to Escape and Avoid Aversive Events Abstract. A stimulus or event that occasions responses that are reinforced by escape from, or avoidance of the stimulus is considered an aversive event. Although these responses are often adaptive, many problem behaviors that occur in applied contexts are maintained by negative reinforcement. This presentation will discuss basic research on aversive events and present examples of translational research on the (a) conditioning of aversive stimuli, (b) self-control with aversive stimuli, and (c) assessment and treatment of responses occasioned by aversive stimuli. Application of these findings to populations ranging from typically developing adults to individuals with developmental disabilities will be discussed. Learning Objectives 1. Identify examples of stimuli or events that occasion escape or avoidance responses. 2. Describe findings from translational research on the conditioning of aversive stimuli, self-control with aversive stimuli, and assessment and treatment of responses occasioned by aversive stimuli. 3. Describe how research findings apply to a broad range of populations.
