8 I had been working as a peer support/youth worker but I wanted to be able to contribute to the growth of the industry as a whole and realised I needed (and wanted) to expand my knowledge through professional study. I received a scholarship to undertake a 10-week research project last summer and have also been offered a Graduate Teaching Assistant position in a BHumServ youth work course. The human services industry is increasingly requiring a degree to work in this area. The Faculty of Education is welcoming and encouraging, and offers a lot of services that support students through their study. Through this degree you will develop as a person, as a professional and you ll have access to lecturers who are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about what they re teaching. Other postgraduate study options include: Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma in Professional Supervision Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling Theory Master of Counselling (Note: professional experience may be required before you can apply to study some of these programmes) I chose this degree because I want to learn how to work with people at a relational grassroots level, to learn from them and their experiences, and to use my skills to create change with them rather than to them. I chose The University of Auckland because social work is an international profession and I want a qualification that will be well-regarded on a national and international level. The University of Auckland offers more than just study too. It has a range of student organisations and clubs, which any student can join. Through these I have been able to meet many different people and apply my social work skills in very interesting ways. For example, through the social enterprise club I am working with a team to create an innovative community homework tutoring programme. I ve even been offered a research job through my involvement with this an opportunity I may not have received at another university. I also received a University of Auckland scholarship to attend a U21 international university network summer school in the United States focused on human rights. I have developed so much as a person through this degree and have also broadened my understanding of the world by a considerable extent. After getting some experience as a social worker, I plan to do postgraduate study in public policy. Sharon Ryan is studying for a Bachelor of Social Work and plans to complete with Honours Faculty of Education - Bachelor of Human Services Bachelor of Social Work 11

By completing the BSW(Hons) programme in your final year you will graduate with a degree qualification recognised by the Social Workers Registration Board, with the added benefit of a year of postgraduate study and preparation for further research. Graduates with Honours will demonstrate an advanced level of critical and analytical ability with particular strength in utilising and developing evidence-led approaches and interventions in social work practice. Entry requirements To be eligible to enter the BSW(Hons) programme you need to have completed 360 points in required courses from the BSW schedule, with an average grade of B or higher in specified courses above Stage II. BSW(Hons) students with exceptional grades may be able to apply to study at doctoral level (eg, PhD in Social Work). Completely my degree with Honours gave me a good grounding into the research process and also cemented my interest in mental health. I now work as a social worker with Counties Manukau DHB within community adult mental health. I think the honours year definitely helped in securing this job as it shows an ability to work autonomously and the fact it was a piece of research related to this field of work it showed I have a real interest in mental health. I enjoy being able to work with people within their own environments and seeing people achieve goals they have identified for themselves. The most satisfying thing is supporting someone to grow and gain the confidence to walk their own path in life. The honours year did have its challenges but it was interesting getting out and interviewing practicing social workers about a topic of interest to me. The highlight was definitely when the year s research project was put together into one piece of work and the sense of achievement that came with this. Ben Hewgill graduated with a Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) Faculty of Education - Bachelor of Human Services Bachelor of Social Work
