7 Welcome to NZTC Facilities and resources Auckland Campus Our Auckland Campus includes purpose-designed classrooms, a specialist early childhood library, student common rooms and kitchen facilities. Library New Zealand Tertiary College has one of the largest specialist early childhood libraries in New Zealand. Students can access our library by browsing the shelves at our Auckland Campus, or by searching our online catalogue which is available through our website. The library also offers computer and internet access, photocopy facilities, and space for individual and small group learning. Staff To deliver our high quality programs, New Zealand Tertiary College brings together over 90 New Zealand-wide staff with expertise in the early childhood sector as well as the adult education, research, leadership, management, administration and information technology sectors. Academic Skills Support Team (ASk) ASk is a team of Lecturers dedicated to supporting you in the development of your academic skills. 11 Teaching qualifications Teaching Qualifications We offer qualifications in two streams; Teaching and Education. If your goal is to become a qualified teacher in New Zealand, you will need to complete a Teaching qualification. New Zealand Tertiary College Teaching qualifications align with the New Zealand Teachers Council requirements for programs of study that lead to provisional registration. NZTC Upgrade If you have completed your Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) at New Zealand Tertiary College, the New Zealand Tertiary College Upgrade to a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) program is an 20 week full-time program. Upgrade If you have completed your Diploma of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) or equivalent at another education provider, the upgrade to a Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) program is a one year full-time program. 15 Teaching qualifications Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) The New Zealand Tertiary College Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) is a two year program. The first stage is the same as the Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5). The second stage of the program builds on the knowledge and practical aspects of early childhood teaching learned in the first stage, as well as equips you with fundamental writing and research skills to help you prepare for higher level study. Field practice You will be required to attend 12 weeks of full-time (40 hours per week) field practice in 3 week blocks during the Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching program. This will consist of 6 weeks per stage. A total of 6 weeks can be carried out in a home centre (the main centre, at which you may already be employed) and 6 weeks in a different centre. It will also equip you with fundamental writing and research skills to help you prepare for higher level study. Field practice You will be required to attend 6 weeks of full-time (40 hours per week) field practice in 3 week blocks during the Certificate in Early Childhood Education program. 3 weeks can be carried out in a home centre (the main centre, at which you may already be employed) and 3 weeks must be carried out in a different centre. Pathway options On successful completion of this program of study you will be eligible to apply for our Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education), which is recognised by the New Zealand Teachers Council. 18 Teaching qualifications Entry criteria Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Early Childhood Education) Before being accepted into the program you must: Hold a level 7 Bachelor s degree (360 credits), a level 8 Bachelor s degree with Honours (480 credits), a level 9 Master s degree (240)*, or a level 7 New Zealand Diploma of Teaching (Primary) Demonstrate your ability to meet the New Zealand Teachers Council s Good Character and Fit to be Teacher Policy (2012) criteria. Refer to Provide written referee report(s) Satisfy New Zealand Police clearance conditions** Declare any physical or learning disability or diverse needs that may impact on your performance as a student Succeed in a personal interview Please note: Students with English as an additional language are required to submit an IELTS (Academic) score of 7.0 in each component upon application. * Students with overseas qualifications must provide a New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) Assessment Report. 19 Teaching qualifications Certificate in Early Childhood Teaching (Level 6) and Certificate in Early Childhood Education (Level 5) Before being accepted into the program you must: Turn 17 within one month of starting the program Have completed four years of secondary schooling (if under 20 years old) Have achieved 48 NCEA credits at Level 2 or better across four subjects (one of which must be English or te reo Māori) with a minimum 12 credits in each subject, or equivalent. Demonstrate your ability to meet the New Zealand Teachers Council s Good Character and Fit to be Teacher Policy (2012) criteria. Refer to Provide written referee report(s) Satisfy New Zealand Police clearance conditions** Declare any physical or learning disability or diverse needs that may impact on your performance as a student Succeed in a personal interview Please note: Students with English as an additional language are required to provide proof of their English language competency. International applicants International students must be 18 years of age and must have an equivalent high school qualification to National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) in New Zealand. Adult applicants (over 20 years of age) We welcome applications from applicants aged 20 years and above who may not have the formal high school qualifications required for entry. 20 Teaching qualifications Modes of Study We offer three modes of study to enable you to choose the best mode to suit your learning style and lifestyle: Distance learning, field based and college based. Distance learning - NZTC Online Our distance learning online option is by far the most flexible; you choose when and where you want to study. The online mode of study with NZTC Online is designed to suit students with computer skills of all levels, from the absolute beginner to the more experienced. If you choose the distance learning study mode you will be required to: have daily access to a computer with broadband internet access, see: Content.aspx?PageID=59 complete courses within specified timeframes and undertake self-directed study (typically between hours per week; this may increase when assessments are due) undertake work experience (paid or voluntary) in an approved, licensed early childhood centre for a minimum of 16 hours per week throughout the program under the supervision of a fully registered Associate Teacher complete full time field practice under the guidance of a fully registered Associate Teacher in an early childhood centre. Each program has a different field practice requirement regarding number and length of placements attend two 20 hour block courses per stage (study year). These will be 10 hours each day and will be held on a consecutive Sunday and Monday. At block courses students can develop connections with other learners and have the opportunity to share their own experiences, practices, inspiration and ideas with lecturers and other students demonstrate a mastery level of Information Technology competency prior to graduation of the program Please note: In addition international students in the distance learning mode of study must attend four hours of tutorials a week at the Auckland campus. Field based For students in our Bachelor of Teaching (Early Childhood Education) program, we offer a field based option. As a field based learner, you will attend lectures each week at our Auckland Campus. You will also be required to complete study and assessments during your own time. If you choose the field based study mode you will be required to: attend two evening lectures per week, from 5pm-9pm in stages one and two; and one evening lecture per week, from 5pm-9pm in stage three complete courses within specified timeframes and undertake self-directed study (typically between hours per week; this may increase when assessments are due) undertake work experience (paid or voluntary) in an approved, licensed early childhood centre for a minimum of 16 hours per week throughout the program under the supervision of a fully registered Associate Teacher complete full time field practice under the guidance of a fully registered Associate Teacher in an early childhood centre. Each program has a different field practice requirement regarding number and length of placements Please note: Field based classes are subject to a minimum number of students. College based College based students will attend lectures during the week at our Auckland Campus. If you choose the College based study mode you will be required to: attend lectures for 20 hours per week complete courses within specified timeframes and undertake self-directed study (typically between hours per week, this may increase when assignments are due) gain teaching experience during placement in an early childhood centre complete full time field practice under the guidance of a fully registered Associate Teacher in an early childhood centre. Each program has a different field practice requirement regarding number and length of placements Please note: College based mode of study is only available during the first year of study. After the first year students are required to transfer into our distance learning - NZTC Online mode of study. College based classes are subject to minimum numbers. 21 Teaching qualifications How to apply New Zealand domestic students only. International students please refer to page 42. Step 1: Complete the forms and gather supporting documentation 1. Application form (Teaching) 2. Consent to disclose information form 3. Gather verified documents* e.g. birth certificate, current passport, academic transcript, residency permit (if required), marriage certificate. For a full list of required supporting documents please refer to page 18 in the Application form (Teaching). 4. Post the application form and supporting documentation to: New Zealand Tertiary College PO Box Greenlane Auckland 1546 New Zealand *Verified copies mean that original documents must be sighted and the copy signed as being a true and accurate copy by an authorised person, including Justice of the Peace (JP), Barrister or Solicitor, Notary Public, Court Register or Deputy Registrar, Member of Parliament, Land Transport New Zealand, Public Trust, Education Agent or New Zealand Tertiary College staff member. Step 2: Distribute documents for completion 5. Identify two people to be your referees. They should not be a relative, one must be a professional referee, and you must have known them for more than 6 months. It is preferred that at least one referee has observed you with young children and is able to comment on your disposition to be an early childhood teacher. 6. Give them the Referees Report to complete and return directly to New Zealand Tertiary College, or enclose the referee reports with your application. 7. For field based and distance learning applicants only; Find a centre willing to support you with your studies and ask the centre to complete the Centre Statement of Student Support form and forward it directly to New Zealand Tertiary College. * The New Zealand Tertiary College professional referee criteria includes the following: Associate Teacher, employer, colleague, registered teacher, lecturer, school principal, nurse, doctor, solicitor, bank manager, minister, kaumātua, community leader or member of parliament. Step 3: Interview and selection 9. Once we have received all the documentation, and supporting documents we will contact you to arrange a personal interview. 10. The Selection Panel will then consider your application against our selection criteria, the Ministry of Education and New Zealand Teachers Council requirements. 11. When we have evaluated your application we will contact you and let you know if you have been accepted into the program. 12. 24 Education qualifications Master of Education (Early Childhood Education) In order to advance quality teaching, learning, research and scholarship skills in the early childhood education sector, we are proud to offer a specialist Masters program in early childhood education. The New Zealand Tertiary College Master of Education (Early Childhood Education) gives degree graduates who have an interest in the early childhood sector an opportunity to gain higher level research, curriculum and leadership skills. Our Master of Education (Early Childhood Education) will enable those who hold higher positions such as managers and senior teaching staff, to enhance the leadership and mentoring of teachers in their centres. The program is also beneficial to graduates who seek careers as researchers, scholars, lecturers or academics in the early childhood field. Distance learning - NZTC Online Our distance learning online option is by far the most flexible; students choose when and where they want to study. The online mode of study with NZTC Online is designed to suit students with computer skills of all levels.
