Sporting Champions Support Note /2015 Super School Games Visits The focus for this training day was to identify the different types of group the Sporting Champions will be working with over the next 12 months. There is a definite focus on working with more challenging groups, including young people who are slightly less engaged with sport as well a young people who are NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training). The session looked at different delivery models, how to engage with these groups and an opportunity to plan and deliver a session to a group of year old NEET young people. It required more experienced Sporting Champions to work with some new Sporting Champions and co-deliver. The outcomes for the day were: 1. How to deliver progressive sessions (repeat visits) with older and more challenging groups 2. New programmes (satellite clubs and innovation programmes) and what this means for Sporting Champions 3. Experienced Sporting Champions will gain experience of assisting new Sporting Champions delivery and be able to give them feedback on what they observed 4. Debrief the School Games.

New programmes As well as the visits Sporting Champions have supported in the past, on programmes such as Sportivate and the School Games, there are two new programmes they are likely to support this year. Satellite clubs Satellite clubs are extensions, or outposts of community sports clubs which are established in a new venue, usually a secondary school or college and specifically target the age group. Coaches and volunteers from a community sports club work in partnership with the satellite host venue to create a new community satellite club. Example: Roundhouse Boxing Club, Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke on Trent They provide a stepping stone to a community club or regular participation through the creation of relevant, appealing and convenient sporting opportunities for young people. Innovation programmes Sportivate Innovation programmes are likely to be targeted at new approaches to working with young people. There may be all girls groups, cultural groups and hard to reach groups. Each satellite club and innovation project will be unique so it is important for the Sporting Champion to talk to the host to plan their involvement. What effect will this have on your delivery as a Sporting Champion?

What to consider when working with a more disengaged or challenging group P. E. C. S Participants Who are they? What barriers do they have to overcome? What might be their motivation? Showing support in different ways? Environment Does the physical environment need to be the same? How do you want the social environment to feel? What might you challenge or let go? What can you do to achieve the desired environment? Contents How does your content change/evolve? What are the factors you need to consider when planning? What parallels can you draw upon? When is the right time for competition? Staff How do you want to be? How can you use the staff present? What support might you need? What do you want them to get from you?

When planning your session consider the flow of learning and how this changes the way you deliver on each session. Flow of Learning Programme start Programme end Staff and Sporting Champion Discipline, Responsibility, Motivation, Challenge and Learning Participant Discipline, Responsibility, Motivation Challenge and Learning

Evaluating your session What did you learn from the session you delivered? What feedback did you get from the young people? What feedback did you get from the other Sporting Champions? What went well? What would you change next time? What were the main changes you made in your delivery with this group?

Athlete Team Leader Support Sharing concerns Content Athlete Team Leader Working with a particular group Advice on key messages You can call one of the ATL s at any time, but if you are a new Sporting Champion we recommend the following process: Phone call 2-3 weeks before visit support planning for the content of your session Phone call 2-3 days before if needed last minute advise or to check and challenge Phone call after visit - to capture learning
