9 Presentations Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust spoke about supporting transformational change and shared the benefits they are reaping from their implementation of The Productive Series. One example they gave was the reduction in the length of hospital stays going from 107 to 68 to 50 and now with a new target of 40. NHS West and South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw CSU spoke about Unlocking Leadership Capabilities using The Productive Leader, the first CSU to adopt Productive improvement methodologies. Leeds Healthcare Community NHS Trust spoke passionately about their Improvement Learning Programme and their MAD ideas (Making a Difference) stating sometimes the smallest changes can make the biggest difference. The overriding message from all presenters was one of how a managed bottom up approach to change empowers staff to take ownership.
10 Table Top Exercise Mark Richardson, Senior Lean Facilitator at Virtual College facilitated a fun table top exercise where delegates were asked to build paper aeroplanes which demonstrated the importance of Standard Operating Procedures and how they can reduce variation. Lunch and coffee breaks gave delegates the opportunity to network and view the Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust Innovation and Research Forum.
11
12 Question Time After lunch the improvement experts, joined by Mark Richardson, made up the panel at the Question and Answer session. Discussion was held around: How improvement activities can be seen as business as usual and not temporary or transient projects How to overcome financial barriers to service improvement How to measure the impact on the quality of service provision The impact of improvement programmes across organisations How process mapping supports the redesign of corporate and support services How to change the mind-set of senior staff and rigid salary structures How to evaluate how embedded a culture of improvement is within an organisation How to engage consultants in service improvement The Productive Leader and its influence on Commissioning Services
