Changing young lives through sport.
The work of sported. enables us to leave a powerful legacy from the Games for young people across the UK. sported. will be continuing their work through 2012 and beyond, inspiring hundreds of thousands of young people and delivering our legacy promise for years to come. Lord Sebastian Coe, sported. Patron What is? sported. is the UK s leading sport for development charity, helping to transform the lives of disadvantaged young people aged We know that sport has the ability to engage and inspire young people. We also know that the people best placed to deliver sport and encourage change in young people are those at a local level, who understand the issues and problems affecting their communities. That s why we support community and voluntary sports groups delivering sport for development. Our aim is to help them grow and run their organisations to the best of their ability. It s our way of helping to change young people s lives. There are thousands of organisations throughout the UK delivering sport to disadvantaged young people. Many of them don t have the resources, funding or business expertise to run their organisation to its full potential. These groups are off the radar of other funders and support services and despite the fantastic work they are doing, are often struggling to survive. That s where sported. comes in. We are a free membership organisation providing the business support and funding these groups really need. Not only does it help them to become more sustainable, but it lets them focus on what they do best inspiring young people through sport. sported. provides a support network for groups delivering sport for development across the UK.
What is SPORT for development? Sport for development is more than just sport. We want to support organisations who have a clear intention to use sport in order to achieve a positive social outcome for young people. For us, sport is not an end in itself, it is used as a vehicle to engage and educate young people and communities. At sported. all of the projects we support work towards at least one of five specific outcomes: Building stronger communities Reducing crime and anti-social behaviour Removing barriers to regular participation in sport for marginalised groups Developing young people by providing them with skills for the workplace and life Providing education in health and well being sported. believes sport is a powerful tool which can be used to engage and inspire change in young people. Having conducted extensive research into the sports sector as a whole, we discovered sport for development was missing a voice. As the UK s leading charity in this area, sported. aims to raise the profile of sport for development, giving it a louder voice and showcasing to the rest of the UK what it can achieve. sported. is playing an essential role in bringing the sport for development sector together to speak with a unified voice and raise the awareness of sport as a powerful tool for social change. Andy Reed, Director, Sportsthinktank Sport has an enormously positive impact on young people s lives. With London 2012 we have a once in a lifetime opportunity to capitalise on the increased interest in sport. Organisations such as sported. play a vital role in inspiring, motivating and educating young people and helping to create positive communities. Hugh Robertson, Minister for Sport and the Olympics
How we WORK. Everything we do is aimed towards helping our Members and the young people they work with. We pride ourselves on our personal relationships with our Members and we offer a mixture of personal and online services tailored to the needs of each individual Member. We recognise that every community is unique and the issues and problems affecting each one are different. That s why we have local Managers across the UK who understand the demographics and social needs within their communities. They have excellent partnerships with other local organisations and support services, allowing our Members to access further support, advice and funding. We want to enable our Members to continue doing what they do best delivering sport for development. Therefore we do not tell them how to deliver their activities. Instead our Managers and network of volunteers support the business side of their operation to help them grow and become more sustainable. We anticipate that our partnership with sported. will contribute to more sustainable sport organisations, run in a business savvy way whilst still serving communities, as well as ensuring better use of available football and multi-sport sites across the country. Early indications show that it is making a real difference on the ground. Clare Fitzboydon, Head of Communications & Corporate Relations, The Football Foundation
What we offer our MEMBERS. Becoming a Member of sported. is free and once joined, Member organisations can access a wide range of services, which include: Funding: Once an organisation becomes a Member, they can apply to sported. for funding. We also help Members identify and apply for other sources of external funding. For example, last year we helped one of our Members leverage six times more funding than they had received from sported. Skilled volunteers: Based on our personal knowledge of our Members, we carefully match them with the appropriate volunteer who can respond effectively to their needs. The skill set of our volunteer base is diverse, covering business planning, accounting, HR, marketing and fundraising, amongst others. Online services: We have a Members Area on our website, packed with helpful online resources. Here you will find a range of business tools available from financial templates to marketing and PR guides, designed to help our Members in every aspect of their organisation. Insurance scheme: Thanks to our partnership with insurance broker Lockton Affinity, all our Members have access to an exclusive sported. insurance offer, enabling our Members to save large sums of money on their insurance needs an offer they can t get anywhere else. The support provided by sported. has helped the club achieve a more focussed approach to our work. The grant will help fund work for our boxing section and also young people who are NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training) through specific projects. The club is now in a much stronger position than it was and this can clearly be identified as part of the support provided by sported. Coventry Boys Club, West Midlands
VOLUNTEERING. Volunteers are essential to the work of sported. and sit at the heart of what we do. We have a growing network of volunteers who provide specialist skills and expertise to our Members, helping them to improve the areas of their organisation that they are struggling with. Not only does volunteering with sported. have a positive impact on local communities, it also enables our volunteers to develop skills such as negotiation, communication, problem solving, relationship management and strategic planning. Volunteering with sported. provides a unique opportunity for those people with skills beyond coaching and officiating to make a positive impact within sport. Becoming a sported. Member is one of the best things that can happen to an organisation. sported. has a strong team and great resources, which S Factor has benefited from. The most beneficial resource of all was to be given the opportunity to work with our Mentor Dave Armstrong. The support from Dave has been immense and has enabled us to have a more structured framework, something all successful organisations need. S Factor Academy, London It s a great opportunity to help worthwhile organisations and impart some of my knowledge and experience to individuals, who help make a real difference to their communities. Ravi Kumar, Consultant and sported. Mentor, West Midlands

Being introduced to the boxing gym first and foremost taught me how to deal with my anger and to see things from different perspectives. I am a living example of what getting involved in sport can achieve. My position in the gang was quite high and I have now completely turned my life around through the boxing club.
