3 What are apprenticeships? 59% 59% of businesses say they benefit from lower training costs Apprenticeships are government funded work-based training programmes to help give your staff the sustainable skills they need to succeed whilst working for you and in the retail industry. They are designed to meet the needs and requirements of your business and are role relevant, meaning that individuals will put their skills into practice in the workplace daily whilst gaining nationally recognised qualifications. They are fully funded by the Government and the costs go towards a full 12 month training and support package provided by Lifetime Training to ensure your staff gain the qualification at the end. What are the benefits? Apprenticeships are fast becoming one of the most favourable routes for building successful, dedicated and motivated work forces. Since 2015 the Government has allocated large funds into apprenticeships and has made a commitment of 3 million new apprenticeship starts in England between 2015 and The aim is to encourage more young people aged and 24+ to consider apprenticeships as a viable and respected training route into employment which not only gives them a nationally recognised qualification but also helps them to build lasting skills for a long and successful career. Government funding allows employers like you to take on an apprentice at no extra cost, you just pay their wages. Apprenticeships are proving hugely valuable to employers as they help to improve staff skills, customer service and staff retention and help your business and team to flourish. These are all critical attributes of a successful company. 4 Free apprentice recruitment service Lifetime Training can offer you a free service to provide work-ready candidates with the motivation and potential to make a real difference to your business. How does it work? Lifetime identifies entry level vacancies We will advertise the vacancy, pre-screen candidates and provide CVs for your consideration You employ the apprentice and pay at least an apprenticeship wage for the duration of their training We provide on-going training and support for the length of your employees apprenticeship training Training for existing staff You let us know if you have a member of staff that would like to do an apprenticeship and we will contact them to sign them up Once signed up, all apprentices work towards a nationally recognised apprenticeship qualification Depending on the learner, this programme will take at least 12 months to complete A Lifetime trainer will visit learners on a regular basis throughout their programme observing the apprentice working, completing tests, or marking written work that has been completed Each visit will be agreed with the Store Manager or designated person and planned around staff rotas The learner and line manager will receive helpful feedback after each visit. This review will take minutes and will identify progress and agree learning and tasks to be completed by the apprentice for the next visit Each learner will be given work to complete between visits, requiring two to three hours of their own time, but the majority of assessment will be completed through observations of the learner in their role The assessor, learner and manager formally review progress every 12 weeks Eligibility Apprenticeships are subject to funding availability and can be applied for by employees aged Employment must be for at least 16 hours per week, except where the apprentice cannot complete the full 30 hours. In these cases employment must be for more than16 hours a week, and the qualification will take longer Employees must not hold an HND, degree or equivalent Level 4 qualification, or be in another form of education e.g. college or university Candidate must have lived within the UK or EU for the last three years and have the right to remain indefinitely Paying your apprentice A national minimum wage for apprentices of 3.30 applies to all apprentices aged under 19 and those aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship. FAQ s Do I receive any monetary incentives to take on an apprentice? No, you will not receive a direct monetary incentive to take on apprentices. However, apprenticeship training costs are subsidised in full, or in part, by the government and lifetime training. Is there a cost for employers? Like all employees, apprentices must receive a wage. The national minimum wage for apprentices is 3.30 Per hour which should be paid for the length of apprenticeship training. Employers should also be prepared to invest in supervision, support and mentoring as a vital part in getting the most out of any apprenticeship programme. Existing staff should remain on their current wage prior to starting the apprenticeship programme. What are my responsibilities as the employer? As with all employees, you are responsible for providing a contract of employment, inducting the apprentice and ensuring their health and safety at all times whilst in work. Do I have to give my apprentice holidays? Like other employees, apprentices must be given at least 20 days paid holiday per year. Do apprentices pay tax and national insurance? As is the case of all employees aged over 16, apprentices must still pay tax and national insurance on their income. What are apprentice s insured to carry out? Like all your employees, apprentices should be covered under employer insurance. What do I do if I have someone who would like to complete a qualification?
