2 How we can work together Sale Sharks are offering primary schools an exciting of activities for the new academic year which comprises both sporting and classroom based sessions. Sale Sharks Community Trust was established in 2010 to help draw on the core values of rugby; teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, to deliver a range of community s across the North West. The aim of the Trust s work is to help change the lives of young people and to use rugby and sport as a way to educate and inspire. These packages have been designed to help schools choose the best way for them to work with Sale Sharks, however, we are also happy to work with schools to develop a bespoke. Benefits of working with Sale Sharks Community Trust The Trust has a dedicated team of staff who are highly qualified, but more importantly are experienced at working with pupils of all ages and abilities including pupils with a range of additional needs. During the last year, the Trust worked with around 150 schools and around 5,000 pupils. Our for 2016/17 For the new academic year, Sale Sharks Community Trust is offering schools a package of s in which they can choose a free curriculum alongside an additional and an enrichment activity through a lunchtime or after-school club. These have been combined into a number of packages; gold, silver and bronze and each package brings with it a range of benefits. A link with a professional rugby club that has an ethos based on strong core values Programmes linked to Ofsted outcomes across a range of subjects Working with professional and dedicated staff who have a range of NGB qualifications, first aid qualifications, equality and diversity training and health and safety qualifications. All staff have enhanced DBS checks and have received training around the safeguarding of children and vulnerable people. Links with local clubs to help create long term sustainable sporting pathways. 4 Our free schools s Sale Sharks is offering a number of free s that are delivered over a six week period combining a one hour classroom session with a one hour practical Tag Rugby session. A full breakdown of all s is available on request. Aviva Tackling Numbers Aviva Tackling Numbers is an innovative and engaging numeracy that makes learning about numbers fun, exciting and rewarding. The uses themed rugby content to connect with real life experiences and examples both in the classroom and during outdoor Tag Rugby sessions over a six week period. Classroom activities cover sessions around addition, subtraction, graphs and shapes alongside topics like budgeting using the club shop as an example. On The Front Foot On The Front Foot uses rugby s core values of teamwork, respect, enjoyment, discipline and sportsmanship, as a way of helping pupils with key issues and a way to help them develop and build character. The has been designed in conjunction with the Department of Education to develop positive character traits such as resilience, grit, tolerance and honesty in young people, particularly at a time when they are facing key transitions, such as moving to secondary school. The includes a classroom session which focuses on different themes which will then run into the outdoor Tag Rugby session; such as a discussion on the importance of respect within the classroom and then how respect can be displayed on the sports field. AIMED AT YEAR 4 AIMED AT YEARS 5&6 Healthy Eating and lifestyle s: Something To Chew On and Cargill Cares Sharks Community Trust runs a number of different healthy eating s funded by two different partners both of which combine a classroom and a Tag Rugby session delivered over a six week period. Cargill Cares helps improve young people s understanding of what constitutes healthy eating and a healthy diet, as well as increasing knowledge of food safety. This is for schools in deprived areas, and either the school itself, or the school s catchment area must fall into the 50% most deprived areas in England. The works with classroom activities based around healthy eating and wellbeing lessons using real life examples of professional rugby players and what they need to eat and drink to help them perform at their best. We also use the outdoor Tag Rugby sessions to show the need for regular exercise. Something to Chew On follows a similar format and is aimed at schools in the most deprived areas, and either the schools itself, or the school s catchment area must fall into the 20% most deprived areas in England. 5 Additional curriculum s Each of these s which lasts six weeks is available to schools to purchase in addition to our free s. Multi-skill and multi-sport coaching sessions Sharks Community Trust staff will create a bespoke multi-sports package to meet the needs and requirements of your individual school. Our coaches will work in partnership with your school to help deliver activities to develop pupils key movement and ABC skills (agility, balance and co-ordination). Sessions can be sport specific to fit in with the school games calendar, multi-sport, multi-skill and/or wheelchair sports using our new sports wheelchairs. The coaches will plan high quality lessons to ensure pupils fundamental skills are continually developed and challenged. From School 2 Stadium Tag Programme From School 2 Stadium is a Tag Rugby which gives pupils the opportunity to get a better understanding of the game of Tag Rugby. The teaches key skills which are also transferable to other sports including passing, catching, tagging and defending. The sessions will be followed by a number of local schools festivals and the winners of each area festival will be invited to come along to the AJ Bell stadium, home of Sale Sharks to play in a Tag Rugby game on the pitch at half time.. Sharky s Cheer School Sharky s Cheer School will provide dance provision for all year groups, The will focus on the fundamental basics of dance movement and technique whilst providing pupils the chance to be creative. Pupils involved in this will also be given the opportunity to work with the Sale Sharks cheerleaders and possibly join them in a routine at one of Sale Sharks home matches, Shark Bite Shark Bite is designed to educate pupils about being healthy in order to tackle rising obesity rates. The looks at nutrition, physical activity, and why it is important to have a balanced diet and live a healthy lifestyle. The children will also learn how to choose, prepare and eat healthy food safely. As well as the classroom session the children will look at the importance of physical activity outside during a weekly Tag Rugby session. Sharky s School of Journalism Sharky s School of Journalism combines sports journalism and Tag Rugby to help improve literacy in Years 5 and 6. The looks at sports journalism through a professional sports club identifying different forms of writing including player interviews, articles and the safe use of social media. A number of pupils will be invited to a Sale Sharks home game to experience a day in the life of a journalist including sitting in the press box and attending the post match interviews. Pupils will also get the chance to write a match review which will be uploaded on 4

6 Extra-curricular activities: Lunchtime and after-school clubs Our lunchtime and after-school clubs are a great way of engaging pupils with additional sporting opportunities. For children who have a desire to increase their sporting ability, these clubs are a great way to develop skills and competence across a range of sports. As well as achieving greater levels of fitness and health, our comprehensive of sports and activities can improve selfconfidence, teamwork and good behaviour. Social skills are enhanced during these clubs, where children have the opportunity to experience new activities whilst forming friendships with other children. Clubs will be run on a one coach per 15 pupils ratio to ensure all the children get a good level of coaching and have as many opportunities as possible to get involved in the games and activities. Each club will have two coaches delivering so can be run with up to 30 children. School-Club Link Programme All schools that work with Sale Sharks on one of our Primary School Sports Programmes will automatically be enrolled on our School- Club Link Programme for the academic year. All schools that are part of the School Club Link Programme will receive a framed certificate that can be displayed in school to acknowledge the partnership with Sale Sharks. Schools can choose to fund these s through their School Sport Premium Payment or through charging individual pupils to take part. The Primary School Club Link Programme will include access to exclusive ticket promotions, coaching tips and techniques as well as a chance to win a visit by a first team player to your school. Three games per season will be designated as School-Club Link games and tickets will be available for 1 per child and 10 per adult. Any school that purchases 50 tickets or more during the season will be entitled to an appearance by a Sale Sharks player. Schools will also be partnered up with their local rugby clubs helping pupils to maintain and continue their sporting journeys. 5

7 Working with Sale Sharks Community Trust Sharks Community Trust is the charitable arm of Sale Sharks, the North West s only Premiership Rugby club and was established in 2010 to help develop the club s community activities. The Trust works with around 15,000 people each year across a range of educational, health and participation s with people of all ages and abilities from communities across the North West. The Trust has a long tradition of delivering educational s including the award winning Number Cruncherz (a financial education for Key Stage 3 pupils) and HITZ, an education aimed at year olds not in employment education and training. During 2014/15, the Trust has worked with hundreds of teachers helping to enhance and develop learning opportunities for young people. We have worked with Sale Sharks coaches for a number of years who have delivered both classroom and sporting activities. We have been impressed with the quality of their coaches and their ability to pass on their knowledge and passion for sport onto all the children they work with. The children love having them in and enjoy the benefit of working with a professional sports club. They have particularly enjoyed getting the chance to represent Sale Sharks at Premiership Rugby s Final in May and playing on the pitch at Twickenham. The staff enjoy them and gain an insight in what they can do when they are teaching PE. Having some of the sessions led by a female coach has had a positive effect, and breaks down traditional stereotypes that Rugby is only for boys. The sessions have been a fantastic addition to our school curriculum and I would recommend them to any primary school.
