It is extremely interesting how students are guided, but not taught. This means, teachers give us guidelines, and students are the ones that do the research. In other words, Glion gives MBA students the tools to learn and conduct research about anything they need or want to. Due to the good job offers I have been receiving, I may confirm that Glion was a very valuable investment for my future. It allowed me to even skip levels in the job hierarchy.» Josefina Coleman - Argentina + + MBA in International Hospitality and Service Industries Management + + Graduated in June Revenue Manager for the Alvear Palace and Alvear Art Hotels + + Buenos Aires, Argentina 10 Glion Graduate School - A world of opportunities

11 Kempinski The Applied Business Project If you are studying a campus-based program, the ABP is a chance for you to work with managers from Glion s industry partners - major hospitality companies such as Kempinski, Nestlé Professional, Mövenpick, and InterContinental - to address the company s real, current business issues. Examples of Applied Business Projects with Kempinski In an ABP with Kempinski, a long-term partner of Glion, MBA students examined how to better motivate and retain employees within the Generation Y demographic, who comprise a majority of Kempinski s front-line workforce but have tended to be more transient than employees of other generations. Faculty members and managers collaborate to establish the aims and objectives for each project. You conduct a qualitative and/or quantitative investigation of the given problem, then offer insights and practical suggestions in a management report presented before the industry partner s decision makers. MBA students conducted focus-group interviews and data analysis of Gen Y employees in Europe, China, Thailand, and the Middle East. Employees said they could benefit from a career-planning program that would help them grow within the career hierarchy, as well as cross-training programs that would broaden their skill set. Finally, you reflect on your contribution in an individual project based on learning theories. You, the school, and the company all benefit. This study has led to further ABP projects with Kempinski, including the building of in-house training for GenY employees and a proposal for a social media recruitment strategy to be applied within the company. «The Applied Business Project is a remarkable chance to connect with the industry. I did my ABP for Kempinski on a very interesting topic: how the current Kempinski sales process across Europe impacts the top line. The ABP developed my business acumen and taught me how to conduct research in a pragmatic way. This MBA has helped me to advance my career in the hospitality industry. The ABP gave me the opportunity to enter the Kempinski Group. I started with an entry-level position in their headquarters as an Operations Coordinator. After one year I was promoted to Regional Operations Manager for Europe. I then moved on to become Regional Operations Manager for India, Middle East & Africa, based in Dubai.» Xavier Etcheberrigaray - United States + + MBA in International Hospitality and Service Industries Management, with a track in Marketing + + Graduated in Regional Operations Manager for Kempinski India, Middle East & Africa + + Dubai, UAE Glion Graduate School - A world of opportunities 11

27 The Mentorship Program The Glion Mentorship Program puts graduating students who are searching for a position in contact with alumni who can help them with their search. It is a bridge into the student s future life; one foot into reality. Glion interviewed the first student and mentor to participate in this program. THE MENTOR THE STUDENT Eddy Brosse United Kingdom Glion Online MBA, Graduated in 2013 Deputy General Manager at Holiday Inn London Camden Lock (BDL Ltd), London, UK Nick Comaty Lebanon Postgraduate Diploma in Hospitality Management, Graduated in 2013 Room Dining Supervisor, SBE SLS South Beach, Miami Beach, USA Interview with a student and his mentor How did you come to participate in this program? Eddy: The Dean of Glion Graduate Programs approached me one day and offered me the chance to mentor a student who needed support from someone in the industry. Nick was struggling to fit in due to his age and previous experience, which was unmatched by his fellow students. We had similarities in our experience and profiles. We did connect straightaway. I was able to feel what Nick was feeling, and understand what he was going through. So I was able to advise him from my own experience. Nick: Eddy has been an excellent mentor who helped me on a professional and personal basis. When I was first introduced to him, I was struggling to get a job offer and my morale was very low. He helped me to focus on assessing my strengths and weaknesses and work on a better résumé, and he gave me great advice regarding interviews. On top of that, Eddy sent my information to his own network, which was very helpful in getting feedback from professionals. He also gave me some valuable information regarding certain companies and properties that I had been in contact with. You were the first ones to experience this initiative. Would you recommend other students and alumni to follow you? Eddy: I believe it is positive for students to have role models to support their early development. Some students are very stressed by the idea of starting their work life, and this program will reassure them, give them structure and guidance. Building bridges with the industry is also a bonus, and the earlier the better. After all, this is also the Glion Spirit! Nick: It is a great experience and really helps a lot. Glion does have extremely qualified professors who all have extensive knowledge and experience in the industry, but having access to someone who is currently working in a management position is an invaluable support to anyone looking at starting a career. Are you still in touch? Eddy: Definitely, yes! We actually wish we could work together one day. Nick: Of course! We are regularly in touch. Eddy has always been very helpful when things were not going as well as I expected, and I look forward to hopefully being able to work in the same hotel. 34 «The reason we come to recruit at Glion is because Glion has such a great reputation in Switzerland and around the world for attracting great students to study their variety of courses. The courses are well suited to the industry, in particular to the luxury industry, which is what we're a part of, so we chose to partner with Glion for the caliber of their courses and the caliber of their students. Students from all schools bring talent and a variety of skills to the hospitality industry. The difference with Glion students is that they have a very good balance between their practical skills and theoretical skills, which some of the other hotel schools may not focus on as much. It's the mixture of skills from the service side, and the management theory which makes Glion of particular interest to Ritz-Carlton».
