Flexicon continue to operate as an independently owned family business, manufacturing Cable Management products in the UK for a wide range of markets including the Construction Industry, Rail, Marine, MOD, and Machinery & OEM s to name but a few. The last seven years has seen major growth for us both at home and overseas. Utilising the latest technologies in production and automation, our manufacturing efficiencies allow us to be competitive in today s global marketplace. FLEXILOK A new range of slim, nylon, one part, fast fit, fittings. Available in straight, 90 elbow and coupler versions with metric and PG threads. See pages 58 and 66. FPA & FPAX T PIECES Fast fit and high strength T pieces with inspection lid to assist cable installation. Available in FPA () and FPAX (IP) version together with a range of outlet reducers. See page 59. SPIRAL REINFORCED PVC RANGES EXTENDED Both FPC and LPC conduit ranges have been extended to offer: oil-resistant, high temperature and ultra flexible versions. Fitting options and performances have also been increased. See pages 62 to mm CORRUGATED AND FPA FITTINGS 67mm corrugated in PA6, PA12 and PP have been added with FPA67 fittings offering one piece, fast fit, with very high pull off strength. See pages 43 and. FPAX FITTINGS GAIN MORE APPROVALS Fast fit, high strength FPAX fittings have now been tested and approved to IP69K, the high temperature and high pressure automotive jet wash test. Plus FPAX fittings with FPAS conduit are UL and cul listed by underwriters laboratories to UL60. See pages 52 to 54. BRAIDED CONDUITS EXTENDED A range of steel and nylon corrugated conduits are now available with galvanised steel, stainless steel or tinned copper overbraid plus a new range of ultra-high tensile strength fittings introduced. These specialist systems offer EMC screening, high tensile strength and IP ratings together with abrasion and vandal resistance. See pages 30 to 37. ADDITIONS TO LIQUID TIGHT RANGE Swivel fittings, couplers and 45 elbows have been added plus the range of stainless steel fittings has been extended. Stainless steel inner liquid tight is now available for very demanding or food applications. LFH COATED AND UNCOATED STEEL PLIABLE Both LFH coated and uncoated steel pliable conduits and fittings are now available. These are high strength, bendable conduits for use where low fire hazard properties are essential. See pages and 29. See pages to 27. TIME DELAY SWITCHES Pneumatic time delay switches are now available under the Flexicon brand. A simple and easy to install energy saving product that is suitable for both new build and retro-fit applications. See pages 74 and 75. CABLE GLANDS A new range of nylon cable glands from M to M in black, red, white and light grey have been added to accessories. Nickel plated brass, metric and PG threaded, cable gland combinations have been added to both the FPA and FPAX nylon fittings ranges in straights, 90 and 45 elbows. Take retail for example; whilst the building is in the construction phase the store cannot trade and is therefore not generating turnover. By using products that are quick and easy to install Contractors can reduce construction lead-times and move on to the next project. With increased emphasis on whole life costs consideration to maintenance schedules and future proofing becomes more important. 9 Defence Flexicon offer a range of solutions suitable for the demanding applications in the defence sectors. This sector demands that critical systems are protected to be totally reliable within the severest of environments. All of these high standards have been met and surpassed by Flexicon conduit systems. With products specifically suited to meet the strictest standards for Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC), systems can provide protection from stray interference for essential plant and equipment. Shock, vibration and impact protection is paramount within critical cabling systems found on defence applications. Choose from conduit systems ranging from 10mm to 75mm in size, manufactured in galvanised steel or stainless steel and with or without a range of coverings/over braiding. Metallic conduit systems can offer higher compression strength and pull off strength characteristics than non-metallic. They are also suitable where there are wide temperature tolerances and can provide IP ratings from IP40 up to IP. Metallic systems also provide a high level of impact resistance. Available in a wide variety of sizes ranging from 10mm up to 106mm and manufactured from a range of materials offering different properties. Non-metallic conduit systems offer a lighter weight and corrosion resistant alternative to metallic systems. The product is typically easier to work with than metallic systems and is highly flexible. If subjected to an impact nylon conduit will return to its original shape due to the memory flex properties of the materials used. With IP ratings up to IP69K, more innovation is possible with nylon injection moulded fittings. Fittings are available with brass threads when used in heavier duty applications or where OEM design requires a metal to metal thread. Where conduits of 40mm and above penetrate fire barriers in buildings the wiring regulations stipulate that internal seals should be used to maintain fire resistance. To meet the UK wiring regulations conduit should be self extinguishing unless they are to be buried or contained in non combustible material e.g: concrete or plaster. CC01. Use CC02 for sites up to 67mm. Metallic conduits should be cut with a fine tooth ( TPI) hacksaw or bandsaw. Our clamping vice, part no. BSB makes the use of a hacksaw much easier. Cutting of overbraided conduit is made much easier by wrapping self adhesive tape around the conduit and sawing through the middle of the tape. The tape should be removed if EMC screening is required. Flexicon can supply bench mounted bandsaws designed to cut metallic conduit easily. To obtain EMC screening on pliable FLP conduit, the PVC sheath must be trimmed back prior to assembly. Metal fittings should be nipped with grips or spanner to ensure securing and IP rating. Face sealing washers may be required to maintain IP rating between systems. The easiest way of installing cables into flexible and pliable conduit is to simultaneously draw in the cables with the conduit in straight condition before installation. 82 THE POWER IN CABLE MANAGEMENT 82 Low Fire Hazard (LFH) performance LFH encompasses LSF (low smoke and fume) and LSOH (low smoke zero halogen) Low Fire Hazard (LFH) conduit systems are becoming an increasing part of the specification in many cabling applications. Public buildings, retail outlets, high rise office blocks, hospitals and transport installations - these are just a few of the instances where Low Fire Hazard products may be demanded. Low Fire Hazard systems are required to protect personnel and property in the event of a fire and may be demanded by specifiers, occupiers, fire services or even insurers. At Flexicon we define a Low Fire Hazard product by having all of the following properties: Highly flame retardant to prevent a fire or limit its development if one does start. Low smoke emission in the event of a fire to enable personnel to see their way to escape. Low toxicity in the event of a fire to ensure personnel are not overcome during their escape. Halogen free gives an indication of low smoke and low toxicity. It also rules out halogen acid gas emission - a fact that is of interest to insurers as acid smoke can destroy computer equipment and damage the structure of a building. Tests used Flame Retardancy Limiting Oxygen Index (LOl) to BSEN ISO 4589 determines the percentage of oxygen in air that would need to be present to support combustion. The higher the percentage the greater flame retardancy. Oxygen present in normal air %. The UK Code of Practice for railway rolling stock requires % for overground and 34% for underground passenger carriages. UL 94 is an underwriter laboratories standard with flammability classifications HB, V0, V1, V2. HB allows horizontal burning up to a maximum speed, V0 is highly flame retardant. Smoke Density is evaluated to BS53 annex D.8.3, Code of Practice for fire precautions in the design and construction of passenger carrying trains. A plaque of materials is burnt in a 3 metre cubic chamber. A graph of smoke opacity against time is plotted which shows the maximum opacity (Ao) and the time taken to reach that opacity. LFH materials should have Ao < Toxic Fumes Toxity tests such as BS53 annexb and Naval standard NES7 burns a set amount of material and analyses the gases given off. The volume of each gas is multiplied by the toxicity index for each gas. The toxicity index for each gas are added together to give an overall toxicity index for the material. NFF-101/2 is a French Norm, used by railways, which gives an ignition and fume rating from oxygen index, glow wire ignition, smoke density and smoke toxicity tests. Buyer Beware All four properties: Highly flame retardant, Low smoke, Low toxicity, Halogen free, must be present to claim LFH. Halogen free does not assure low smoke and low toxicity. A low smoke and fume product may not be self-extinguishing let alone highly flame retardant. Ensure your supplier provides performance data on all four aspects of Low Fire Hazard performance. IEC EN 686 IEC EN 686 IEC EN 686 is the new worldwide standard for conduit systems and is superceding the previous European conduit standard EN Flexicon were one of the first company s in the UK to have its products tested to the new standard. Our Technical Director, Ian Gibson, is the chairman of both the IEC (worldwide) and CENELEC (European) committees that prepare conduit standards. CE Flexicon products are marked with the CE mark to show that they comply with the essential requirements of the European Low Voltage Directive. RoHS All Flexicon s products meet the requirements of the European RoHS Directive, Restriction of Hazardous substances. This precludes the use of certain toxic materials and heavy metals. WEEE Flexicon s conduit products are not covered by the European WEEE Directive, Waste Electrical and Electric Equipment. LLOYDS REGISTER Specific conduit systems from Flexicon have Lloyds Register of Shipping type approval having been assessed for suitability for marine and other arduous applications. NORTH AMERICAN APPROVALS Most of Flexicon s nylon conduits and fittings have UL (Underwriters Laboratories) recognition for component use within UL listed equipment. Some nylon conduits and fittings have cul approval, which is UL listing to the UL standard UL60 and UL approval to the equivalent CSA standard CSA C22.2 No LTPUL conduit is UL listed to UL360 and CSA approved. RAIL ACCREDITATIONS Flexicon is registered with Achilles Link Up, the UK rail industry supplier qualification scheme, providing a single common registration, qualification and audit process for suppliers that is shared by the UK rail industry - Supplier No 015.
