1 Page 1 of 9 An introduction to Entelechy Arts Entelechy Arts is a participatory arts company based in Lewisham, south-east London. It works with people of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, who have been marginalised through disability and the ageing process, to produce high quality theatre, music, dance and video events and performances. Entelechy works with the families, friends and neighbours, professional and unpaid supporters of all of these groups. We believe that arts practice has the ability to enable people to feel present, alive and engaged with their world and with the worlds of others. We believe that arts engagement has transformative potential. Our work is developed with and not for others: shared leadership and equal ownership are central to the development of our practice. Entelechy s practice happens in a range of places. Art is both made and performed in the everyday settings of the street, in people s front rooms, in church halls, schools and residential care homes. It is made in large-scale arts venues, civic spaces and football stadiums. Entelechy Arts (formerly New Moves) was founded in 1989 at the request of the Lewisham and North Southwark Health Authority. Multi-disciplinary teams of health workers were supporting the resettlement of people with learning disabilities from the old mental handicap asylums to communities in South East London. For many people with learning disabilities, social recognition by their fellow citizens was a new concept. Services sought to enable individuals to become respected and contributing members of their communities. In Lewisham and Southwark they co-opted the imaginations of artists to support this process. The practice that was to become Entelechy was formed. Two major current strands of Entelechy Arts work are: Ambient Siobhan Davies Dance Studios Family Dance events have developed in collaboration with Siobhan Davies Dance Studios, in Elephant and Castle. They present a unique blend of contact improvisation, gentle movement and relaxation and social dance, combined with live music performance. Meet me At the Albany Meet me at the Albany is a programme being developed in collaboration with the Albany and London Borough of Lewisham. The programme is designed to reimagine the delivery of day services for isolated people living home alone. Instead of going to a day centre participants will have the opportunity to attend an arts centre on a weekly basis. Here they will be able to participate in and contribute to a range of arts activities. Entelechy is a small organisation with currently three core staff (all part-time) and a strong team of associate and sessional artists, supported by a large group of creative volunteers. We appreciate that the Executive Director person specification is demanding and also recognise that this role combines business acumen and arts within a creative organisation. We expect that the successful candidate will have experience and skills in each of the 6 main areas of the person specification. However we accept that the successful candidate may not have the experience or the skills with regard to every individual point. 4 Page 4 of 9 Entelechy Arts Executive Director Job Description Reports to: Chair of the Board of Trustees Works alongside: Founder Artistic Director Line manages: Creative Producer and Office Manager Job purpose The role of the Executive Director is to: Provide strategic and operational leadership and management of Entelechy. Ensure the delivery of the artistic programme in accordance with financial and administrative policies and procedures and by developing professional relationships with a range of partners. Provide change management leadership. Report regularly to the Board of Trustees on the progress of Entelechy s work and any other matters relevant to the discharge of the Board s responsibilities. Respect and protect the Company s creative viability. Respect and protect the Company s financial viability with a particular focus on financial risk assessment and management. Maximise the benefit of Entelechy s programme of work to enrich and improve the lives of the participants, artists and staff. The key elements of the role are: Collaborative working Build on and further develop the culture of collaborative working with both external partners and within Entelechy. Work collaboratively with the Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer so that the experience of developing and implementing programmes is used to inform future strategy, business plans and business models. Use skills and experience in business, strategy, finance, partnerships and stakeholder relationships and people management to influence, challenge and support the development and delivery of a range of programmes.

5 Page 5 of 9 Strategic development and business planning Develop the Company s business plan with particular reference to detailed financial forecasting, risk analysis, marketing and audience & participant development. Work with the Founder Artistic Director to review, support and challenge the implementation of the business plan with particular reference to detailed financial forecasting, risk analysis, marketing and audience & participant development. Work collaboratively with the Board and staff through any organisational development and change. Work collaboratively with the Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer to develop and implement creative innovative programmes, which reflect Entelechy s values and mission, enhances its reputation and meets the needs of the funders and participants. Manage and oversee Entelechy s strategy and business planning, working with the Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer so that their experience of delivering programmes informs the future. Financial, management information and business models Working with the Board of Trustees and Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer ensure the long-term viability and financial security, stability and sustainability of Entelechy. Develop and implement business models so that the company s creative and financial viability and sustainability are respected and protected. Develop business models to effectively manage the development and implementation of programmes, assessing costs and fee structures. Ensure financial stability and sustainability by increasing income and maximising revenue streams. Develop and implement business models so that programmes are replicable and income generating. Gather and analyse robust management information and use this evidence to decide on priorities and targets and to support the implementation of the programmes by the Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer. Ensuring financial stability and sustainability by gaining core-work and project funding. Ensure effective financial systems are in place and adhered to. Prepare and submit an annual operational budget, manage effectively within this budget, and report accurately on progress made and challenges encountered. Provide the Board of Trustees in a timely manner the necessary background, briefing and other documentation to assist it in making considered decisions on all matters of policy, planning and budgeting.

6 Page 6 of 9 External relationships, partnerships and communication Working collaboratively with the Founder Artistic Director lead, manage and cultivate existing relationships with funders to secure and expand recurring revenue streams. Develop relationships with potential funders and other stakeholders. Effectively manage partnership working including developing and implementing contracts and identify further partnering opportunities. Publicly represent Entelechy with the media and external constituency groups including the community, governmental, and private organisations. Build advocacy for Entelechy s mission. Promote Entelechy s brand and reputation. Operational leadership Develop a culture that is consistent with Entelechy s values and mission. Build the Entelechy team so that it works well together and communicates well. Capture the learning in the organisation so that the creative ideas are developed within the agreed structure and converted into deliverable programmes. Champion an approach to diversity and equal opportunities within Entelechy and its pool of artist and volunteers that reflect its values and practice. Enable staff to contribute and develop by carrying out a range of people management processes including performance management reviews. Ensure effective co-ordination and smooth running across all aspects of the organisation. Ensure compliance with all legal obligations and requirements including Companies Act, Charity Law, Insurance, Health & Safety, and Employment Law. Lead on all HR and personnel matters including recruitment, employment contracts, policies and engagement and management of staff. Develop and implement training and development programmes for staff. Working with the Founder Artistic Director and Creative Producer include volunteers and artists. Ensure maintenance and compliance with necessary licenses and leases. Develop a marketing and PR programme including social media and the website.

Experience of working with a Board, preparing reports and influencing strategic direction. Broad experience of business management: strategic development, change management, business planning, financial management and risk assessment, people management and policy setting. Broad experience of working with and influencing external partners. Financial, management information and business models Experience company financial management and developing financial business models. Experience of planning, managing and controlling budgets at a senior level. Understanding the arts funding system in England and experience of sourcing public and private sector funding including bid writing experience. External relationships, partnerships and communication Able to engage with a wide range of stakeholders and cultures. Experience of working in partnership with local authorities and other strategic bodies to develop and encourage engagement with the participatory arts. Proven ability to network and establish and maintain new and existing relationships in arts, health and social care contexts. Excellent writing skills, able to produce professional documents, often to tight deadlines. Excellent verbal communication skills; a persuasive and passionate communicator. Experience of using social media and websites to communicate messages. Strong presentation, public speaking and networking skills. Operational leadership and collaboration Able to work in collaboration with colleagues to ensure a shared vision for the company. Experience of leading, managing, supporting and motivating teams.
