1 The Fairtrade Foundation Job Title: Reports to: Staff reporting: Based at: Salary band: Project Lead New Business Options for Cocoa and Sugar (Ideally to start 1 April December 2013) Director of Strategy & Policy, Fairtrade International Responsible for functional management of dispersed project team, especially workstream leads London, England with travel to Bonn, Germany D Date updated: February 2013 Background Fairtrade has been talking about Moving Beyond the Mark for some time: there is recognition that Fairtrade needs to innovate its business model in composite products in order to maximise impact for producers. The current model for composite products has the principle of All That Can Be (ATCB) which requires that all ingredients in a composite product that can be Fairtrade, must be. This has achieved a certain amount of success for Fairtrade, notably in the UK market with commitments to Fairtrade from Cadbury Dairy Milk, Kit Kat and Maltesers. However, innovation is required to open this growth out to new markets and brands; thereby providing new opportunities for Fairtrade producers. A strategic decision was made by Fairtrade in 2012 to develop New Business Options for cocoa and sugar (NBO or New Business Model) and the project was started in January The project sits alongside two other strategic projects: one developing a new business model for cotton (NBEO Cotton) and another to develop new ways of working with dedicated Fairtrade Organisations (FTOs). In addition to Fairtrade s current product certification model, this project aims to develop new and additional ways for businesses to commit to Fairtrade on an ingredient/ commodity basis. Meeting the desired level of impact will require the right finance model accompanying a potential New Business Model, to ensure that improved and increased support is delivered to Fairtrade producers. It is the role of this project to develop potential options, on the basis of comprehensive consumer, commercial, producer and stakeholder research and risk analysis, and to make recommendations to the Board of Fairtrade International. The Role The Project Lead New Business Options Cocoa and Sugar position is recruited on behalf of the global system and reports to the Director of Strategy and Policy at Fairtrade International. The post holder is responsible for managing dispersed functional/expert teams located across the system. This role is located at the Fairtrade Foundation offices in London but is treated as a secondment to Fairtrade International in Bonn.

2 Job purpose To lead the final stages of the development of New Business Models for cocoa and sugar for the Fairtrade International system, presenting ready to implement quality recommendations to the Fairtrade International Board. If approved, to lead the implementation of the New Business Models in the Fairtrade system Key tasks Project Leadership: NBO development and implementation To develop a project plan and work with project owner to secure resourcing (people, budget, in kind) from within the Fairtrade system and alignment of senior stakeholders to the plan of work. To deliver the project plan on time and within budget, monitoring and reporting on expenditure, progress on deliverables to the Global Operating Team (GOT) and the Finance Committee (FC). Securing support and approval for key outputs/ milestones as required and raising blockages and lobbying for action to resolve. To develop and deliver against a decision-making and development process, providing transparency and active engagement to senior internal stakeholders of Fairtrade International Members and Fairtrade International Leadership Team. To present the project internally to a range of senior fora, creating alignment and capturing opportunities and risks. To seek solutions to issues/ concerns and escalate where necessary to GOT. To put in a place and deliver against a robust risk management analysis and risk mitigation plan. To ensure New Business Models proposed are in line with Fairtrade s principles and vision, and that a robust implementation plan is in place to deliver if approved. Models to include key elements of: Branding and Communications framework, Rules of Engagement, and Finance Model. To play an active role in engaging all of Fairtrade s key stakeholders - both internal and external - to secure their input into, and support for, the New Business Models. To demonstrate resourcefulness, resilience and flexibility in delivering the project at a time of considerable flux and change in the Fairtrade system; to adapt to changing circumstances. Team leadership and management To manage and lead the project team to deliver against the Project s objectives, ensuring a shared sense of purpose and clarity of vision; to set up and train teams for implementation in Fairtrade International, across Labelling Initiatives (LIs) and Producer Networks (PNs). To hold individual team members to account on performance and delivery, and to support, coach and mentor team members and to be prepared and able to step in and support where needed on key content development and project work-stream process. To lead some key workstreams personally, to ensure delivery against timeline and quality requirements. Driving strategic change To seek approval of and buy-in to NBO, navigating through complex governance structures in a politically sensitive environment; managing relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders, recognizing competing priorities and interests related to the project s strategic change proposals

3 To represent the NBO project at the highest levels; responsible for writing submissions to and presenting to the Fairtrade International Board, alongside the GOT. To champion NBO and actively lobby key Fairtrade leaders and decision-makers across the system, both directly and indirectly, galvanizing support for strategic change. Managing Complexity To manage complexity in both NBO content and strategy; to respond to the ever changing context around the project, being quick to adapt and adjust process and content thinking, whilst maintaining focus on key objectives and deliverables and ensuring progress is made in the final solution development Multi-stakeholder engagement and management To develop and implement robust communications strategies to ensure all Fairtrade members (National Fairtrade Organisations, PNs) are kept abreast of project developments, are supported to understand NBO and are able to contribute and participate in problem analysis and solution development

Experience of motivating staff (including senior staff) and ensuring objectives are clear, understood and met. Knowledge/ Technical Skills In-depth understanding of Fairtrade system Significant understanding of commercial, financial, supply chain, development and marketing / communication aspects of Fairtrade Project Management planning, tracking, course correcting, progress reporting and delivering results on time in budget Excellent communication skills at various levels of seniority and to varied internal and external audiences Strong influencing confidence and capability to persuade senior people, with differing agendas, using a variety of content / styles Performance Management ability to hold people to account without line management authority Knowledge of different business models. 6 Terms and Conditions Post: Location: Project Lead New Business Options for Cocoa and Sugar The Fairtrade Foundation, Ibex House, Minories, London, EC3N 1DY or if required at another location or office to be able to carry out the duties of the post Contract: Ideally to start 1 April 2013 to 31 December 2013 Visa requirements: Salary: Hours: The Foundation does not currently have the ability to issue sponsorship certificates to individuals without the right to work in the UK 42,438 per annum, pro-rata at first scale point within the band ( 42,438-48,423pa) 35 hours Monday to Friday, flexitime is worked around core hours of to Hours worked in agreement with your line manager. Overtime payments are not normally made although time of in lieu will normally be given where excess hours are worked Ability to undertake regular travel to Bonn Some travel may be involved in the UK and mainland Europe Probation period: All new appointments are subject to a probationary period of 6 months Holidays: The holiday leave year runs from 1 January - 31 December. Holiday entitlement for full-time employees is 25 days per annum, plus three days between Christmas and New Year (pro-rata for part-time employees) Holiday entitlement increases by 5 days after completion of 5 years continuous service by the beginning of the new Fairtrade Foundation leave year which runs from 1 January - 31 December Pension: Health care: Training: Optional contributory pension scheme (sliding scale up to a maximum 6-10% by employer, dependent on employee contribution from 1% - 5%) Corporate cover via Benenden Health is available to all staff All staff have access to appropriate training
