Installation, Last mile and last meter challenges and issues The Quality Connection Presenter: Karl Bauer Managing Director LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH
Presentation Outline LEONI AG Last mile challenges when building FTTH networks Lessons learned rolling out FTTH networks throughout Europe and recommendations LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
LEONI_AG LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
LEONI-Group in few words Worldwide one of the largest manufacturer of wires, cables and wiring systems, as well as a provider of related development services More than employees About 70 locations in 46 countries Tailor-made products and solutions for different fields of application at MDAX listed on the stock exchange LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,

Last mile challenges when building FTTH networks LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
Regulatory Framework Regulation vs. Public policy A stable and predictable regulatory and public policy environment is key to enabling FTTH investment The current Regulatory Framework is being reviewed to conclude in Summer 2008? We are pleased to see that Next Generation Access (NGA) is a major component of the Review We believe a strong pro-investment NGA based on FTTH position needs to be further developed LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
Outside plant challenges Civil costs are still prominent in most projects varying from 65 to 85% The costs for civil vary between the European countries from about 15/m to 125/m The rules regarding rights of ways are different between the European countries Speed of the roll-out defines the success of the business plan Space limitations within dense cities to build larger POPs Larger scale compressed roll-outs do result into disturbing the city live through traffic issues LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
In-House challenges New MDU The Fiber cabling needs to be foreseen during the planning phase of the architecture and the landlords need to be convinced from day one The cabling system needs to be protected during the building of the in-house infrastructure The cabling system needs to become an easy to install solution enabling lower skilled labor to be used Existing MDU Customised solutions for the different buildings need to be engineered. Each building requires a site survey prior to installation The cabling solutions needs to be prepared both to connect the customer on day one and the future customers MDU - (Multi Dwelling Unit) LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
Lessons learned rolling out FTTH networks throughout Europe and recommendations LEONI NBG Fiber Optics GmbH,
