AirLiner Slate Page 1
About An AirLiner wireless slate allows you to interact wirelessly with our computer. It can be used with a Smart board, but one is not required. Multiple slate users can write at the same time as someone using the Smart board. The Bluetooth USB adapter enables wireless communication between the AirLiner and your computer. It does not require line of sight. The battery-free tethered pen works like a mouse, enabling you to select, edit and erase objects, images and text. A battery-free mouse also works with the slate. Installation for First Use You will only have to do complete this installation process once for your station. The first time you connect the slate to a station you must create a wireless connection using the provided software. Installing the USB adapter driver 1. Make sure the slate s battery is charged. See the Battery section for more information. 2. The first time you create a connection between the AirLiner and your computer, it is helpful to position the slate as close to your computer as possible and to ensure that there is a direct, unobstructed line of sight between the slate and the Bluetooth USB adapter. Move or turn off equipment such as a microwave or because they can interfere. 3. To enable the wireless connection, you must install the Bluetooth USB adapter s driver. Do not insert the Bluetooth USB adapter into a USB port until the software asks you to do so during the installation process. 4. First, insert the Bluetooth USB Adapter Installation CD into your computer. 5. The installation should start automatically. If it doesn t, select Start>Run and type x:\setup.exe (where x is the CD Drive), and press Enter. You can also click the Browse button and navigate to your CD Drive and click on the file. 6. Follow the installation prompts. 7. When the box is displayed saying No Bluetooth device was detected insert the USB Adapter. If the Windows Found New Hardware wizard pop up, close it. 8. Click the Finish button at the end of the installation. A Bluetooth places icon will appear on your desktop and in your task tray. Page 2
Creating a Connection Between the AirLiner and Your Computer 1. Right click on the Bluetooth icon in the task tray and choose Bluetooth Setup Wizard. 2. Turn on the slate by pressing the power button in the top left corner. 3. Press the Connect button on the back. The power indicator flashes quickly, indicating that the slate is in discovery mode. 4. When the Welcome box appears, choose the 2 nd radio button, I want to find a specific Bluetooth device 5. Click Next. 6. Select the SMART Wireless Slate with one click. 7. Click Next. 8. When this box appears Use the slate s pen or mouse to click on the Click here button. 9. The power indicator on the slate turns solid blue to indicate connection. The Bluetooth icon in the system tray is now green, instead of white. If you are unable to create a wireless connection within 3 minutes, the slate turns off. Page 3
Installing Smartboard Software To maximize your AirLiner capabilities, install the Smartboard software. However, you don t have to install the software to use the AirLiner just as an input device. 1. Close all programs. 2. Insert the Smart board software CD. The installation should start automatically. If it doesn t select Start>Run and type x:\autorun.exe (where x is the CD drive), and press Enter. 3. Follow the on-screen instructions. Connecting Again If you restart your computer or temporarily remove the Bluetooth USB adapter, the slate maintains its connection to your computer. You don t need to press the Connect button. However, if the slate has been used another computer since you last used it, you will need to use the Connect button. See the previous section, Creating a Connection Between the AirLiner and Your Computer. 1. Insert the Bluetooth USB adapter into your computer. When the adapter is not plugged in the task bar icon is blue and red. When you plug in the adapter the red turns white. If it doesn t, right click on the task bar icon and choose Enable Bluetooth device. 2. Press the power button on the AirLiner. The slate automatically reestablishes its most recent wireless connection. The task bar icon is now blue and green. 3. If the connection is not made follow the direction for Creating a Connection Between the AirLiner and Your Computer. Page 4
Using the AirLiner Power Button Indicator Solid blue: The slate is turned on, but the pen, function buttons, or mouse isn t in use. Green: The slate is turned on, and the pen, function buttons, or mouse is in use. Slowly flashing blue: The battery s charge is low and needs to be recharged. Quickly flashing blue: The slate is in discoverable mode, attempting to establish a wireless connection with the computer. Pen The more you use the pen, the easier and more natural it becomes to work with it. Hold the pen normally, and so that you can conveniently press the side switch with your thumb or forefinger. Hover the pen within ¼ of the slate to move your cursor around the screen. You can use the pen to single-click with a single tap, or double-click with a double tab. To drag an object, position the point on the object, press and drag, then lift to release. To select text, position the point at the beginning, touching the slate, and slide across desired text, lifting at the end. By default, the pen assumes the point function. Press the icons on the underlay s tool strip to change the pen from pointer to something else or to start a program including: pointer, eraser, or on-screen keyboard; black, blue, read, or green pen; right-click; or Smart board software control panel. Keyboard: click the pointer first and then the keyboard. To write in black digital ink, press and hold the lower side switch while writing or drawing on the workspace. To write in another color, touch the pen on one of the colored pens in the tool strip, then write or draw on the workspace. To erase, press the upper side switch and hold as you move the pen over the workspace. Or, touch the pen to the erase in the tool strip and then move the pen over the workspace. The pen storage compartment conveniently and safely stores the pen. Page 5

Function Buttons There are two customizable function buttons located at the top of the slate. The Left button is set to start Floating Tools and the Right button to start Notebook software. To customize: 1. Start the Smart Board software Control Panel. 2. Click SMART Board Settings. 3. Click the AirLiner. 4. Then select Pen and Button Settings from the drop down menu. 5. Close the Control Panel. Turning Off 1. Press the power button on the top left corner of the slate. 2. Before removing the USB adapter, right click on the task bar Bluetooth icon and choose Stop the Blue Tooth Device. Cleaning and Care Regularly clean the slate with a soft, damp cloth, using mild soap diluted with water when necessary. To maintain the sensitivity of your pen tip, do not store the pen so that it rests on its tip. Do not attempt to twist open the pen. When the tip of the pen becomes too short or develops a flat point, a replacement tip can be ordered and installed. The pen storage compartment conveniently and safely stores the pen. Do not leave the pen or mouse on the slate s workspace when you are not using them. They can interfere with pointer positioning. Page 10
If you will not be using your slate for an extended period of time (one month or longer), fully recharge the battery, and then remove it from the slate. Battery A new, fully charged battery lasts for approximately 25 hours of constant use. The AirLiner slate continues to draw a small amount of battery charge, even when it is turned off. When the battery charge falls below 20% a notification area balloon tip appears indicating you should connect the slate to a power outlet. When the AirLiner slate battery charge is nearly empty, the power indicator on the slate slowly flashes blue. You can also check the battery status using the Smartboard software. 1. Start the Smart board software control panel. 2. Select Smartboard settings. 3. Click the AirLiner slate. The battery status is displayed in the bottom right corner: Green=fully charged; Partial Red: low charge; Green Arrows: recharging. Recharge the battery as often as possible so that it does not lose all of its charge. If the AirLiner slate battery charge is nearly empty and you do not connect the slate to a power outlet, you risk draining the battery completely. A battery that has lost all of its charge can no longer be recharged. If the charging indicator remains off when you connect the slate to a power outlet then the battery is completely drained and must be replaced. The time required to fully recharge the battery varies. If the battery is low, it takes approximately five to six hours to fully recharge the battery. To recharge the battery, insert the power adapter s round connector into the DC IN receptacle located on the right side of the slate. Insert the power adapter s prongs into a power outlet. You do not have to turn on the AirLiner slate to recharge the battery. Charging indicator displays the battery status when the power adapter is connected: Green=charged Orange=recharging. A built-in protection circuit prevents the battery from overcharging. If you will not be using the slate for an extended period of time (one month or longer), fully recharge the battery, and then remove it from the slate. Page 11
Troubleshooting Can t reconnect 1. Right click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray. 2. Make sure it says Stop the Bluetooth device at the bottom of the pop up menu. This tells you the computer recognizes the toggle is plugged in. If it says Start the Bluetooth, then click this to activate it. 3. Right click on the bluetooth icon in the system tray. 4. Choose Bluetooth Setup Wizard. 5. Turn on the slate. 6. Press the connect button the back. 7. Choose the second radio button I want to find a specific Bluetooth device 8. Click Next. 9.
