3 Introduction to Smart Board Overview The board will work when connected to a computer with a USB cable (generally attached to the board) A projector may be used with the laptop and board to provide greater functionality of both. The board can be used as both a screen/monitor and as an input device. Thus the board can be used to control any program that runs on the computer. The pens can be used to mark up items shown on the screen. In general, when a pen is removed from the tray, a transparency will be simulated over the projector, this is what is marked-up. When the pen is returned to the tray, the transparency is torn-off and the board can be used to control programs again. The Smart Notebook software is useful for saving onscreen mark ups and for preparing lessons. The board will behave differently when the Notebook software is the active program. The board s performance will also vary if the program that is currently running is ink aware. For example, MS Word is ink aware and using the pens on the tool bar will have a different effect than using a pen on Internet Explorer s toolbar. Handouts Created by: Bill MacIntosh

4 Introduction to Smart Board Connection Basics A USB cable needs to be connected between the computer (with Smart Software installed) and the board for the board to function properly. The Pens and eraser should be stored and in their proper positions in the tray. If everything is connected correctly, the ready light on the lower right hand corner of the board will glow a solid green color, as indicated below After the projector powers up and is adjusted for optimum visibility, it needs to be aligned. Use the two Pen-Tray buttons (keyboard and right click) to call up the quick alignment screen (as indicated to the right) Touch the screen in the indicated areas to align the board with the projector. If either the board or projector are moved, a realignment may be required. NOTE: Be sure to start the Smart Software before trying to use any of the Pens (You may use the board to start the software). Either double click on the Smart Tools icon (on the desktop) or click on the Start Button (lower left corner of the screen), Programs, Smartboard Software, and choose Smartboard Tools. 5 Introduction to Smart Board Using the Board as a Demonstration Tool The board may be used to demonstrate the steps necessary to perform program functions, such as in navigating to shared drives to open or to save documents. After the board is aligned, use a finger to click anywhere on the screen. The computer will act as if a mouse click had occurred at that point. To Right-click, press on the board and hold for 2-3 seconds or use the rightclick button on the pen tray. To enter text, either click the keyboard button on the pen tray (to call up the onscreen keyboard) or write out the desired text, then right-click at the desired location to inject the text. Depending on the text, the board can do a fair job of recognizing neat handwriting. Once a pen or the eraser is lifted from the pen tray, the board will behave differently. A Transparency layer will be shown around the screen and the floating tool bar will appear (if not already present). See below: While the transparency layer is on, use the pen to circle important portions, trace routes, draw arrows, etc to highlight the important portions of the screen. After the pen is returned to the tray, the marked up screen is maintained until the board is touched. If you wish to save the markups, be sure to press the camera icon on the floating toolbar. This will call up an area-capture which will be copied into the Smart Notebook. (To capture an area, click the camera and then drag a rectangle around the desired portion of the screen). I If you accidentally erase all the marks ups, there is a box which will appear for 3 seconds in the lower right hand corner of the screen to return the text, or use the undo button on the floating toolbar.
