1. Getting Started To install this theme you must have a working version of WordPress already installed. For information in regard to installing the WordPress platform, please see the WordPress Codex at Theme Installation When you are ready to install a theme, you must first upload the theme files and then activate the theme itself. The theme files can be uploaded in two ways: FTP Upload: Using your FTP program, upload the non-zipped theme folder into the /wp-content/themes/ folder on your server. WordPress Upload: Navigate to Appearance Add New Themes Upload. Go to browse, and select the zipped theme folder. Before you install the theme, you will be prompted to install the Zilla Portfolio plugin. This makes portfolio projects portable between Themezilla portfolio themes. We also recommend installing the Zilla Shortcodes plugin. Once these plugins have been uploaded, click Install Now and the theme will upload and install automatically. Once the theme is uploaded, you need to activate it. Go to Appearance Themes and activate your new theme. 1.2 Setting up the Portfolio Frame supports the creation of unlimited Portfolio pages, which can be populated with whichever posts you specify. To setup a portfolio, go to your dashboard and select Page > Add New from the left-hand menu. You will need two pages; one will be used as a Cover page, and the other will be used as for the Portfolio Posts. Add a new Page by giving your Page a title and then locating the box labeled Page Attributes on the lower-right hand side of the screen. From here, select either Portfolio or Cover from the Templates dropdown menu. Choosing either Portfolio or Cover will have a different effect on the Cover page: Page 1
Cover Template: The Cover page will display as a Splash page on load. When you scroll down or click the arrow at the bottom of the screen, the Splash page will change into a Sidebar and the Portfolio Posts will appear on the left. Portfolio Template: The Cover page will only display as a sidebar on the left with the Portfolio Posts on the right; there will be no opening Splash page. Once this is set, click the blue Publish button from above (or if you re editing an existing page the blue Update button) to save your changes. 1.3 Setting up Portfolio Posts To add an item to your new portfolio page, select Portfolio Posts > Add New from the left-hand menu. Give the new post a name and add any content that will go along with the portfolio item. Next, to add an image to display for your portfolio, select Set featured image from the Featured Image box on the bottom right-hand side of the screen. You can also add Portfolio Types and categorize your Portfolio Posts. The Portfolio Types will be displayed as Filters on your Portfolio Post page. Once you re all set, scroll back up and click the blue Publish button to save your changes. Whenever you add new projects, it will automatically be added to the Portfolio Post page Adding Gallery Items You can also add content using the Zilla Portfolio settings and reorder them using the Order meta box under Attributes in the Portfolio Post Settings. You can also feature a project, write information about the project, and display an Image Gallery, Audio posts, and Video posts. By clicking Featured Project, this post will display full width and at the top of the Portfolio Post page. Note: If you have content uploaded to a Gallery but uncheck its corresponding Display box, the content will still appear in the Post Adding Images to the Gallery To add images to each portfolio item, upload your images using the Zilla Gallery Settings panel. If the Zilla Gallery Settings panel is not visible, ensure you have the Display Gallery Page 2
option checked. You can upload an unlimited number of images. Click the Upload Images button, select your images, and Upload. Note: A Featured Image will only appear on the Stacked Image Gallery Post page, but it won t appear on the Post page of an Image Slideshow Adding Video to the Gallery Each portfolio item can display either a self hosted video or video embedded from YouTube or Vimeo. To add a video from either Vimeo or YouTube, simply copy and paste the provided embed code in the appropriate section. To display self hosted video, ensure to include the correct paths to the.m4v and.ogv file formats and declare the video height. You must also provide a poster image. Note: You must provide both formats for consistent display across all browsers Adding Audio to the Gallery Each portfolio item can play a self hosted audio file. To play self hosted audio, ensure you include the correct paths to the.mp3 and.ogg file formats hosted on your server. You can also provide a poster image, which will appear as the Still image overlaying an uploaded (.mp4 or.webm format) video before it starts playing. Note: You must provide both formats for consistent display across all browsers, and the Poster Image will not display for embedded videos. 1.4 Setting up the Blog To set up the blog, head over to the sidebar and click on Posts Add New. Here, you can add text, video, audio, or image content. Set the Format as either Standard, Audio, Gallery, Image, Link, Quote, or Video. Choose a Featured Image, add Tags, and click Publish. 2. Theme Features Frame comes packed with features that control the layout and extend the functionality of WordPress. This section will document those features and how to use them successfully. Page 3
2.1 Custom Menus You can show either one or two custom menus in Frame. To setup your custom menus, navigate to Appearance Menus. Give your menu a name and add Pages, Portfolio Posts, Custom Links, Categories, and Portfolio Types to the menu. Once you have built your menu, save it and assign it to a location. More info: Frame is designed to handle only a few menu Call to Action links that will lead readers to various pages within the blog or portfolio. You can also add a secondary class to menu items. To do this, click Screen Options in the Menu settings, and then select CSS classes. Add the class Secondary to the menu item. You can assign this location a custom menu as well, which can also be used within widgets. 2.2 Widgets & Plugins Frame comes ready-to-use with all of the Themezilla widget plugins and the Zilla Shortcodes plugin, all freely available at These can be used to display a number of different social media interactions and Blog Layout features. Once installed, the widgets can be found and setup in Appearance Widgets, and the shortcodes can be applied using the Insert Shortcode button just above the content entry area when editing a post, page, or portfolio item. This theme gives you the ability to choose your own accent colour in the WordPress Customizer. Apply those colours to your buttons by using style= accent in the shortcode. 2.3 SEO Settings The theme supports the use of simple SEO settings on a per page/post basis. You may set the title, meta description, meta keywords, and the meta robots tag. The SEO settings will automatically deactivate if you choose to use one of the more comprehensive SEO plugins: Headspace 2, All-in-one SEO Pack, WordPress SEO by Yoast. 2.4 Theme Options The theme uses the built-in WordPress Customizer. You can access it by navigating to Page 4
Appearance Customize. The theme options are conveniently spread over a number of tabs and each tab contains the options that pertain to a particular area of the theme Layout You can choose from either showing your Latest Posts, or a Static Front Page. Choosing the Latest Blog Posts will have a conventional blog layout, showing the most recent blog post at the top. Choosing the Static Front Page layout will show the Cover Splash page, the Lefthand Sidebar, and your Portfolio Posts. 3. Blog and Portfolio Theme Options This section will outline the Theme Options that can be used in both the Latest Posts (Blog Layout)and Static Front Page (Portfolio Post Layout). 3.1 Sidebar Options Frame s sidebar can be given a custom background image, ideally one with a portrait aspect ratio (tall, not wide). The background can be displayed with a translucent black overlay, whose opacity/darkness can be adjusted in 20% increments using the Sidebar Darkness option in the customization screen. Upload a sidebar image under Left Sidebar Image. This will also be the image displayed on the Cover Splash Page. (Note: If no Sidebar Background Image is chosen but a Background Image is, the Background Image will appear on the Cover Splash Page). 3.2 Social Media Links Frame gives you the option of adding in social media links to your favorite social networks to the right-hand side of the theme s footer. To add your social media profiles, select Appearance > Customize. In the Customize Settings, select the Social Icons menu. This will reveal a list of input fields, one for each social network that Frame supports. To add a network to your theme, just type the full URL of your profile on that network. For example, if you d like to add your Twitter profile, you would would find the Twitter URL field and type user name]. Don t forget Page 5
the at the beginning! Currently, Frame offers support for: Bandcamp, Behance, Delicious, DeviantArt, Digg, Dribbble, , Etsy, Facebook, FLickr, Foursquare, Github, Google+, Instagram, LastFM, LinkedIn, Myspace, Pinboard, Pinterest, Rdio, Skype, Soundcloud, Spotify, Steam, Stumbleupon, Svpply, Vimeo, and Youtube. Once you ve added your links, click the blue Save & Publish button at the top of the light grey menu to save your changes. 3.3 Contact Information Frame gives you the option of displaying your contact information on your site (an address and phone number that display at the bottom of the left-hand sidebar). To add your contact information, log into the Dashboard for your site and (from the left-hand menu) select Appearance > Customize. Next, click on the section labeled Contact Information. You can enter your address and telephone number in the corresponding fields. Once you ve added your contact information, click the blue Save & Publish button at the top of the light grey menu to save your changes. 3.4 Background Image The Background Image will display as the background to either your Latest Posts in the Blog Post Layout or to your Portfolio Posts in the Gapless Portfolio Post Layout. If there is no Sidebar Image, the Background Image will display across both the Sidebar and Post background. 3.5 Disabling Retina Images In the Customize Settings, you have the option to disable retina images for hdpi devices. If you are concerned about mobile load speed or are using bitmap images, we recommend disabling retina images. However, if you want to showcase visual work at a higher quality across all Page 6
devices, we recommend keeping retina images enabled. 3.6 Navigation For the Blog layout, your Primary Menu will appear on the Left Sidebar. For the Static page/ Portfolio layout, you can choose two menus. The Primary Menu will appear on the Lefthand Sidebar of a Static Front Page (Portfolio Post) layout, and the Secondary Menu will appear on a static Cover Splash Page (if the Featured Portfolio Items is set to 0 ). 3.7 Featured Images The theme supports the use of Featured Images in both Portfolio and Blog post layouts, and will auto-resize the featured images at the top of the page it s displayed on. We recommend using an image 1160 wide, or larger. Experiment with different sizes until you get the desired effect. To upload a feature Image, go to Posts Add New or Portfolio Posts Add New or edit an existing post. Locate the Featured Image module in the right column, and click the Set Featured Image link. Clicking the link will open up the usual WordPress image uploader where you will upload your image. Once you re done uploading the image, simply click the link that says Set Featured Image, which is next to the button to insert it into the post. For more on how to use the WordPress Featured Image function you can view the WordPress support article at 4. Portfolio Specific Theme Options 4.1 Thumbnail Aspect Ratios The thumbnail tiles comprising Frame s main portfolio view have three selectable aspect ratios: Page 7
landscape (4:3), portrait (3:4), and square (1:1). From the dropdown under Thumbnail Aspect in Frame s Customize Settings, select an aspect ratio. Frame also has the ability to enable a gapless layout, which will show gutters of the background image or colour between each Portfolio Post. Once this is complete, click the blue Save & Publish button at the top of the menu. Note: Frame uses responsive images. This means that the theme loads the best image size depending on device and screen size. We recommend using image sizes 2560px or larger for the portfolio. 4.2 Items Per Page and Pagination If you re working with a large number of portfolio items, you can set the number of items to display per page in your portfolio under the setting titled Portfolio Options. If the Front Page template is set to Cover, Frame will bring in only the Featured Portfolio Posts or the specified number of Featured posts in Featured Portfolio Posts on the Cover Page on the front page. If there are no Featured Portfolio Posts, the theme will show the specified number of Posts in the Portfolio Items per Page setting. Enter in the number of items you d like to display on each page in the Portfolio Items per Page field. Once this is complete, click the blue Save & Publish button at the top of the menu. 4.3 Permalink Pages To set up your portfolio items to link directly to their permalink pages, check the box next to Link portfolio items directly to permalink page. Once this is complete, click the blue Save & Publish button at the top of the menu. 5.
