Byrnes Editor YOUNG DESIGNERS & TECHNICIANS 2002 by Elynmarie Kazle, VP Membership and Development The 2002 USITT Young Designers & Technicians Awards were presented at the Awards Banquet on 16 February 2002 at the conclusion of the 2002 Annual Conference & Stage Expo in New Orleans. Students and recent graduates from nine schools were represented this year. All the participants in the Young Designers & Technicians Awards are nominated by USITT members and their portfolios are evaluated by a panel of experts, this year consisting of William J. Byrnes, Dennis Dorn, Alexandra Bonds, Laura Love, Rachel Keebler, Lisa Westkaemper, Stephanie Young, Elizabeth Lewandowski, Sylvia Hillyard Pannell, Richard Pilbrow, Charles E. Williams, Craig Wolf and Zelma Weisfeld. Congratulations to this year s award winners featured here, and to the nearly forty exceptional designers and technicians who participated this year. IAN HUNTER CLEAR-COM INTERCOM SYSTEMS sound achievement award Mr. Hunter has worked at the Hall of Music Productions as a sound designer as well as rental systems technician in Lafayette, Indiana. He has also participated in the New Year s Eve telecast from Times Square and has spent the past three summers as the resident sound designer for the Tuacahn Center for the Arts on their summer musical series. He is currently working on developing a new course in Entertainment Control Technologies for his master s thesis project at Purdue University. CARL KRYOLAN makeup design award Ms. Carl graduates from University of Minnesota, Duluth in May Her portfolio demonstrated a flair for makeup design, control of the necessary craft aspects, concerted research efforts and successful outcomes. 5 NATHAN HEVERIN ROSE BRAND award for scene design Mr. Heverin s portfolio included highly imaginative designs with great attention to detail. He graduated in May 2000 from New York University and his work can be seen in productions such as The Voice of the Turtle by John van Druten (November 2001, Mint Theatre Company) and The Good Theif by Lucy Komisar (March 2002, Jose Quintero Theatre).
