1 Brake Lock Application Guide Many commercial vehicles, as well as recreational and off-highway vehicles, require that they remain stationary while performing the functions for which they were designed. Some of these vehicles are found in the utility, cable television, vehicle recovery, multi-stop, transit, refuse recycling, sanitation, ground support, lawn care, and recreational industries. In addition to a well maintained and adjusted mechanical parking brake, experience has shown that in many uses, additional supplemental holding is necessary. This can be done in the form of wheel chocks, outriggers, or other means to keep all wheels that are in contact with the ground from moving. Hydraulic Brake Locks MICO Locks are for supplemental parking and are to be used in conjunction with a vehicle's mechanical parking brake. They perform as an operational holding brake only and are not intended to be used for prolonged parking. All MICO Brake Locks include low pressure warning switch(s) for added safety. Several types of Brake Locks are available for use in single, dual, split, or anti-lock brake systems. The Brake Lock you select will depend on the type of brake system on your vehicle. MICO, Inc. 2 Brake Lock Product Line 691 Brake Lock System User Interface Control Module MICO 691 Brake Lock Systems lock hydraulic pressure in the service brakes to supplement the vehicle's original equipment parking brake and provide extra holding in heavy-duty and high frequency applications. These systems also function as an interlock to apply pressure to the service brakes when other vehicle mounted equipment is being used. The 691 System consists of a small electrohydraulic pump, remote mounted actuator (single and/or dual), electronic control module, and a small dash mounted user interface. The operator simply activates a switch and the 691 System automatically applies, monitors, and maintains brake-locking pressure. A 691 Brake Lock will significantly enhance vehicle holding capability while not interfering with normal service brake function. All MICO Brake Lock Systems are for vehicles using Brake Fluid braking systems. 4 Different Brake Systems Typ i cal hy drau lic brak ing sys tems in use to day vary de pend ing on manu fac turer and size of ve hi cle. For in stance, a ve hi cle equipped with a sin gle sys tem may have a fire wall mounted booster or pos si bly a frame mounted re mote booster. The same holds true for the dual and split sys tems. The rear wheel anti- lock sys tem is a dual brake sys tem with an anti- lock valve in stalled. All- wheel anti- lock sys tems are de fined as 3- channel or 4- channel sys tems (Check the number of out let lines from the anti- lock con trol valve). To be ab so lutely sure which brak ing sys tem your ve hi cle is equipped with, check it. Look for iden ti fy ing fea tures such as dual flex lines at rear axle or front wheels, number of mas ter cyl in der lines, anti- lock valve(s), etc. Then, com pare with cir cuits shown here. All lines, fit tings and ad ja cent ar eas must be cleaned of dirt or road res i due be fore any lines or fit tings are dis con nected. Spe cial care should be taken so dirt and road res i due are not al lowed to en ter hy drau lic brake sys tem. This could con tam i nate the sys tem and in ter fere with proper op er a tion of brakes and MICO lock ing de vices. 5. Fol low pro ce dures out lined in Ve hi cle Man u fac turer s Ser vice Man ual or SAE Stan dards when mak ing new con nec tions or add ing to ex ist ing brake sys tems. Use only steel brake tub ing con form ing to SAE spec i fi ca tions. 6. Use only proper sys tem fluid con form ing to lat est SAE or DOT Stan dards. Improper or con tam i nated fluid may cause gummy de pos its and soft en ing and swell ing of other rub ber seals in the en tire brake sys tem. Such a con di tion must be cor rected im me di ately. 7. Do not use seal ants, tapes, tef lon or ce ment com pounds on any con nec tions or fit tings. The seal ants or com pounds can con tam i nate the hy drau lic brake sys tem and in ter fere with the op er a tion of brake com po nents or MICO lock ing de vice. 8. All fit tings and con nec tions must be in good con di tion and tight ened to proper torque val ues as spec i fied in the In stal la tion and Ser vice In struc tions. 9. Sep a rate mod els of MICO lock ing de vices are avail able for brake fluid and for min eral based hy drau lic oil. Se lect model to con form with the type of fluid in sys tem. 10. Brake hoses, brake lines, MICO lock ing de vice, brake com po nents, cyl in ders, and all fit tings must be rou tinely in spected for leaks, dam age or wear. Adequate fluid lev els must be main tained. In the event of any loss of fluid, brake sys tem must be care fully in spected for leaks. 11. Af ter in stal la tion, bleed sys tem ac cord ing to ve hi cle man u fac turer s recommendations. 12. Fol low IN SPEC TIONS and TESTS sec tion as out lined in the Op er ating In struc tions. 13.
