2 First International Course on Seafarers' Occcupational Risks and Health Examinations May 2006, Naantali Spa Hotel, Naantali (Turku), Finland Background Work on board a ship has many risks. If something happens on board, there are in most cases no possibilities to turn to an expert and get extra help. The seafarers have to manage themselves. Thus the occupational risk evaluation, estimation of the acceptable risk and regular medical examinations are necessary to prevent adverse events and their consequences. Objectives The objectives of the course are to give the participants an overview and understanding of occupational risks on board a ship, their assessment and how they can be taken into account when making an entry and medical examinations for seafarers. After the course the participants will have an overview on: occupational health risks on board a ship how these occupational risks can be evaluated by occupational health staff and the seafarers themselves how occupational risks can be taken into account in the seafarer's medical examinations what health defect could be unacceptable when working on board a ship.

3 Target group Medical doctors and nurses and occupational hygienists working in maritime occupational health, ship company managers, and authorities involved in health and safety. Main topics Occupational health risks in seafaring Risk asessment on board a ship by specialists and by the seafarers themselves Cooperation between shipping companies, their occupational health and safety organisations and seafarers Occupational health risks and medical examinations Basic health demands and limits in the seafaring occupation. Course structure The course will consist of lectures given by invited experts in the field, case presentations, discussions and group work. The participants are encouraged to present their own cases and problems they have met when working in the seafarers' occupational services. Location The course will take place in Naantali which is a charming small town located by the sea, only 15 km from the city of Turku. Local sights include the summer residence "Kultaranta" of the president of Finland, the medieval Naantali Convent Church, and the old city. The organisers will reserve rooms for the participants at the Naantali Spa hotel where the course will take place. The Spa is a high-class conference and holiday hotel. All spa services, the fitness centre and the exercise hall are at the disposal of the guests free of charge. The surroundings of the hotel offer excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. The price of a fullboard package in a single room including accommodation, breakfast, lunch, dinner and conference coffees amounts to EUR 486,- from Wednesday to Friday and the price of a so called day meeting with lunch and conference coffees totals EUR 190,- from Wednesday to Friday. The price of an additional night in case of arriving before course start is EUR 142,-. Minor changes in the prices might be possible.
