1 PhD seminar Cycling and society Understanding cycling and the possibilities for cycling promotion to achieve societal goals. November 28 December : Daily 9 AM 5 PM Hosted by the, Faculty of Life Sciences, Refolana Research School Venue: Forest & Landscape Denmark, Rolighedsvej 23, DK 1958 Frederiksberg, Denmark Organised in the context of the project Bikeability cities for zero emission travel and public health ( by the,, Aalborg University, Danish Cancer Society, Danish Cyclist Federation, Technical University of Delft, and Technical University of Denmark. A renewed interest in cycling can be seen in most cities in the developed world. Cycling provides transport; takes up very little space; is environmentally sustainable; and very importantly offers the possibility of increased physical activity, and thus may part of a solution to the threatening obesity epidemic. A few countries such as Denmark and the Netherlands have a long standing tradition for cycling; while others aim to encourage cycling starting from very low current levels. These efforts and interests to society challenges research where re assessments of cycling policies is likely to be needed as well as more holistic understandings of cycling as interwoven with sociotechnical systems, urban fabrics, and culture. The PhD course explores these preconditions for cycling in tandem with the environmental and public health effects of cycling. The course is based on contributions from researchers in the field of urban form and transportation; urban planning; sociology and culture of cycling; public health; as well as from researchers taking part in the project Bikability: cities for zero emission and public health. Participating PhD students will be asked to present their PhD work briefly during the course, and to write a paper related to the topic of the course. Course coordinators: Trine Agervig Carstensen [email protected] Thomas Alexander Sick Nielsen [email protected] Hans Skov Petersen [email protected]
