This year s theme is Effective Governance in a Changing World. The conference is held in recognition of the important voluntary work undertaken by school governors and to facilitate communication between governors and the Local Authority. To support this we are offering governors and clerks the opportunity to network with other governors, executive members of the Essex School Governors Association and the chance to visit a variety of lunchtime marketplace stands covering a range of services of interest to governors. In addition there is the opportunity to share information and experiences and explore common issues. To book a place, please complete the booking form on page 5 in full and return to us by Friday 28 February Places are initially limited to 2 delegates per school. Additional bookings from the same school will be placed on a waiting list and reviewed 2 weeks before the event. 3 Workshops Out with the old, in with the new! Angela Sumpton, Professional Development Tutor An overview of the new National Curriculum for Primary schools. This workshop will look at the changes in the new curriculum and identify where and how governors should be involved. The new 2014 Secondary National Curriculum: Opportunity or Threat? (AM only) Chris Haines, Education Consultant A chance to engage with the new National Curriculum 2014 for Secondary schools. This workshop will assess how the changes will affect curriculum offer and delivery, assessment and pupil progression. Assessment beyond levels Tracy Goodway, Head of Educational Consultancy and School Effectiveness & Chris Smith, Head of Education Technology and Business Development In this workshop we will provide an update on the latest information regarding the proposed new national assessment arrangements which include the removal of the existing system of levels, the implications for schools and the support planned in Essex, including future proposed developments for Target Tracker. Meeting the expectations at the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage for ALL Children A Governor s Guide Marie-Anne Murphy & Fiona King, EYFS Intervention Officers An information sharing workshop to support Governors in their role to understand national expectations around end of key phase outcomes using the EYFS Profile. This workshop will explore EYFS statutory, non-statutory guidance and Ofsted materials and illustrate how these are to be interpreted within the Statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage and how they can be used to support practitioners in tracking progress and narrowing the gap for vulnerable groups of children and to raise outcomes for ALL children in the EYFS. Effective Governance with LA support Alison Fiala, Assistant Lead Strategic Commissioner Primary & Clare Kershaw, Head of Commissioning Education & Lifelong Learning Safeguarding for Governors Working Together to Safeguard Children Cathryn Adams, Head of Commissioning - Education of Children Looked After & Jo Barclay, Inclusion Commissioner This workshop will help you understand the duty placed upon governing bodies in relation to Safeguarding (Section 175, Education Act 2002) and the requirements of Ofsted. You will have an understanding of the requirements of Working Together document and SET procedures.

4 Creating robust accountability Pam Langmead, Professional Development Tutor New guidance from the Governance places even more emphasis on governors holding the school - and the headteacher - to account for its educational performance. This interactive workshop explores the key areas that governors should focus on and the tools they can use to ensure effective accountability. IT and Social Work Nicki Harris, Education HR Manager There has been a dramatic rise in problems related to misuse of IT and social media by employees. This workshop will explore why and how problems arise and what employers can do to prevent and manage them. Ensuring best use of financial resources Kim Cannon, Consultant Manager, Education Finance Support We will be looking at how best to monitor the budget; why a school budget is a moveable feast and prudent use of resources for maximum benefit. SEND Liz Cornish, Standards and Excellence Lead Commissioner - SEN This workshop explores the implications of SEND reform and the new SEN Code of Practice. The new reform will impact on the way in which schools develop and sustain the achievement and well-being of their pupils with SEN and/or disabilities; it will also affect the way in which schools are inspected. Training Link Governor Workshop (PM only) Debbi Botham, Governor Services Officer and Professional Development Tutor You may like to attend this workshop if you are a new training link governor, or would like the opportunity to reflect on good practice and explore the tools available to help develop your governing body. Setting strategic direction Caroline Scott, Professional Development Tutor Ofsted expects governors in their strategic role to ensure clarity of vision and ethos, to engage with stakeholders, and to meet their statutory duties. This is an interactive workshop to understand what this means and share good practice to ensure we successfully achieve this in our schools.
