10 Review of Governance Governing bodies play a critical role in school improvement, which is assessed rigorously during the Ofsted inspection process. The purpose of a review of governance is to support schools in their improvement journey by helping the governing body identify priorities for improvement through an external review. Tailored to the needs of the governing body, a review of governance identifies what the governing body does well, what needs improving and recommends specific actions for improvement. What does a review of governance entail? The review is led by an experienced, trained expert in school governance, who will contact the school to make introductions and agree a schedule for the day. Reviews are based on trust and mutual respect. They are tailored to the needs of the governing body, but typically: as a starting point for review and discussions, the reviewer will draw up review trails using information such as the school s Ofsted report, data dashboard, annual training record and school website; the reviewer will visit the school to meet with the headteacher, chair and vice chair, and other governors. During the school visit, the reviewer will also scrutinise evidence such as governing body minutes and agendas, governor visit reports and the school development plan. At the end of the review verbal feedback, including outcomes and suggested actions for improvement, will be shared with the chair and headteacher; the reviewer will write a short written report including priorities for improving governance and actions agreed to achieve these; once the review is concluded, the governing body will be able to implement the identified actions for improvement with additional support from Governor Services if required. Evidence of Impact: The recent external review of the governing body has helped governors understand their role more clearly. Members understand the need to make better use of the skills they bring to the school, and are fully committed to improving pupils education. Ofsted School Inspection Report, July 2013 The charge for a review of governance is 795. For further information or to express an interest please cpd@essex.gov.uk
