3 Foreword 2 nd International Conference on Ignition Systems for Gasoline Engines After the success of the 1 st International Conference on Ignition Systems for Gasoline Engines in 2012 we are glad to continue the series of events this year. Work is currently in progress to create fundamentally new processes in an effort to significantly improve the way in which the internal combustion engine utilizes the chemical energy in fuel. In addition to downsizing concepts with high mean effective pressures combustion processes involving a high level of dilution with fresh or residual gas are also being developed in response to this challenge. At the same time, attention is turning to new approaches based on alternative fuels. For example, the homogeneously lean combustion of methane produced from wind power provides an efficient way of using chemical fuel energy within an end-to-end energy chain. All of these development initiatives place significantly higher demands on the ignition system. The question is whether classic spark-plug ignition will in future still be able to provide reliable, precise ignition in the light of a wide spread in mixture quality, high exhaust gas recirculation rates and high cylinder pressures. Ignition is the key to further optimizing the gasoline engine. Enhancing the established systems is equally as important in this regard as delivering completely new ideas. We would be delighted to welcome you as a participant or exhibitor at the 2 nd International Conference on Ignition Systems for Gasoline Engines. Take advantage of this opportunity to engage in intensive dialog with colleagues. Michael Günther, IAV Dr. Ralf Tröger, IAV Click here to register online:
