3 Student computer accounts P a g e 1 As a Buffalo State student, you will access a number of accounts to perform various functions and get important information. Most of these accounts are accessible from the Buffalo State Student page ( Here is a brief description of these accounts: Account Description Account is created Banner Course registration soon after you apply to Buffalo State Blackboard Learning management system soon after you register for classes Campus Network Campus computers/wireless soon after being accepted to Buffalo State network Transfers soon after your evaluation is Degree Works Degree audit system completed New freshmen - soon after you register for classes Student Gmail Buffalo State student account Step 1: Look up your username and Banner ID soon after tuition deposit is paid To access your accounts, the first step is to find your Buffalo State username and Banner ID. You can look up your username and/or Banner ID online by following the steps below: 1. Go to 2. Under Technology on the left side click Lookup Username/Banner ID. 3. Click the link that corresponds to what you are looking for. Buffalo State username will consist of part of your last name, first and middle initials, and a random two-digit number. Your username is used to access campus computers, , Blackboard and Degree Works. Banner ID will begin with an uppercase B followed by a random eight-digit number (e.g. B ). Your ID is used to access the Banner course registration system. Step 2: Activate your accounts by changing your passwords You are required to create a new password before you can access your accounts. The chart below summarizes the username/id and default password/pin associated with each account: Account Login using your Default password Banner Banner ID DOB in MMDDYY format (prompted to change PIN at first login) Blackboard Buffalo State Random - Activate your network password from Banner Campus Network username Buffalo State Random - Activate your network password from Banner Degree Works username Buffalo State Random - Activate your network password from Banner Student Gmail username Buffalo State username Random - Retrieve your default password from Banner Please Note Your campus network account is linked to your Blackboard and Degree Works accounts. In other words, when you activate your network password via Banner, this changes your password for each of these systems. Your PIN/password for Banner and Student Gmail are not linked to your campus network password. Accessing your accounts for the first time The instructions below assume that you are accessing your accounts for the first time. If you have already accessed your accounts and changed your default password/pin, but are having trouble logging in, please contact the RITE Support Desk at 878-HELP (4357) for assistance.

4 Access your Banner account The first time you login to Banner you will be prompted to change your PIN. Follow these steps: P a g e 2 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Banner. 3. Click the Login to Banner (SSB) link on the left side. 4. Click the Log in to Banner link. 5. In the User ID box, enter your Banner ID. 6. In the PIN box, enter your DOB in MMDDYY format, and click Login. 7. When prompted to change your Banner PIN, enter your DOB again in the Re-enter Old PIN box. 8. Type your new PIN in both the New PIN and Re-enter new PIN boxes, click Login. 9. Enter a Security Question and Answer when prompted. The question should be something that only you know the answer to, and the answer should be short. Please Note Your new Banner PIN must be at least six letters/numbers long, and is case sensitive. Password recommendations Remember to create strong passwords. Follow these guidelines: Use a combination of upper/lower case letters, numbers and special characters Avoid using dictionary words - these are easily cracked Avoid using names of people you know, or names of pets Avoid using your phone number or street address Avoid using your Social Security number Reset your Banner PIN If you forget your Banner PIN, you can create a new PIN by following these steps: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Banner. 3. Click the Login to Banner (SSB) link on the left side. 4. Click the Log in to Banner link. 5. In the User ID box, enter your Banner ID. 6. Leave the PIN box blank and click Forget PIN?. 7. Enter the answer to your Security Question in the Answer box, and click Submit Answer. 8. When prompted to reset your Banner PIN, enter your new PIN in both the New PIN and Re-enter new PIN boxes, and click Reset PIN. Please Note Your new Banner PIN must be at least six letters/numbers long, and is case sensitive. Change or reset your network password Follow the steps below to activate your network account for the first time OR to reset a forgotten password. This will change your password for the following systems: campus network, Blackboard and Degree Works. Step 1: Login to Banner The first step is to login to your Banner account: 1. Go to

5 P a g e 3 2. Click the Login to Banner (SSB) link on the left side. 3. Click the Log in to Banner link. 4. Enter your User ID and PIN, and click Login. Please Note If you have trouble accessing Banner, try resetting your PIN. Simply enter your Banner ID and then click Forgot PIN?. After answering your security question you can create a new PIN. Step 2: Reset your network password The next step is to create a new password for your network account: 1. Click the Personal Information link. 2. Click the Reset Student Network Password link. 3. In the New Password box, enter your new password. 4. In the Confirm New Password box, retype your new password, click Submit. 5. You should see a message confirming that your password has been reset. Important! Your new password must be at least 6 and no more than 14 characters long, and is case sensitive. Please allow 15 minutes for your password to synchronize before attempting to access the following systems: campus network, Blackboard and Degree Works. Your PIN/password for Banner and Student Gmail are not linked to your campus network password. Access your Blackboard account You must follow the steps above ( Change or reset your network password ) BEFORE accessing your Blackboard account. Follow these steps: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Blackboard. 3. Click the Login button. 4. In the Username box, enter your Buffalo State username. 5. In the Password box, enter your network password, and click Log On. Important Note for New Students: You will NOT have access to Blackboard until you are officially registered for courses in Banner. Once you register, or are block registered, your Blackboard account will be ready to use within one business day. Access campus computers You must follow the steps above ( Change or reset your network password ) BEFORE logging into a campus computer. Your network password is used to access the campus network, Blackboard, Degree Works, and other resources like the wireless and residence hall (ResNet) networks. Access your Degree Works account You must follow the steps above ( Change or reset your network password ) BEFORE accessing your Degree Works account. Follow these steps: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Degree Works. 3. Click Degree Works Log In, and enter your Buffalo State username in lowercase in the User name box. 4. In the Password box, enter your network password, and click Sign In. Please Note audit@buffalostate.edu or see your Academic Advisor if you have questions about the information found in Degree Works.

6 Access your Student Gmail account P a g e 4 To access Student Gmail, you'll need to retrieve your default password from Banner and activate your account. Follow these steps: Step 1: Login to Banner The first step is to login to your Banner account: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Banner. 3. Click the Login to Banner (SSB) link on the left side. 4. Click the Log in to Banner link. 5. Enter your User ID and PIN, and click Login. Please Note If you have trouble accessing Banner, try resetting your PIN. Simply enter your Banner ID and then click Forgot PIN?. After answering your security question you can create a new PIN. Step 2: View your default password for Student Gmail The next step is to retrieve your default password for Student Gmail: 1. Click the Personal Information link. 2. Click the View/Reset Student Gmail password link. 3. Make note of (or copy) the eight character password displayed next to Your Default Password is. This password is case sensitive. Important! DON'T CLICK THE RESET BUTTON unless you have logged into Student Gmail previously and have forgotten your password. Step 3: Activate your Student Gmail account The final step is to login and activate your Student Gmail account: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Student In the box, enter your Buffalo State address. 4. In the Password box, enter your default password retrieved from Step 2 above, and click Sign in. 5. Enter your default password again in the Current password box, and enter your new password in both the New password and Re-enter password boxes, click Submit. Reset your Student Gmail password If you forget your Student Gmail password, you can reset it to the default by following these steps: Step 1: Login to Banner The first step is to login to your Banner account:

7 P a g e 5 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Banner. 3. Click the Login to Banner (SSB) link on the left side. 4. Click the Log in to Banner link. 5. Enter your User ID and PIN. Please Note If you have trouble accessing Banner, try resetting your PIN. Simply enter your Banner ID and click Forgot PIN?. After answering your security question you can create a new PIN. Step 2: Reset your Student Gmail password The next step is to reset your Student Gmail password to the default: 1. Click the Personal Information link. 2. Click the View/Reset Student Gmail password link. 3. Make note of (or copy) the eight character password displayed next to Your Default Password is. This password is case sensitive. 4. To reset your password to the default, click Reset. Please Note Please allow 15 minutes for your password to sync with Google. Step 3: Login and change your Student Gmail password The final step is to login and change your Student Gmail password: 2. In the Toolbox on the left side click Student In the box, enter your Buffalo State address. 4. In the Password box, enter your default password retrieved from Step 2 above, and click Sign in. 5. Enter your default password again in the Current password box, and enter your new password in both the New password and Re-enter password boxes, click Submit. Remember to sign out of your accounts To protect the privacy and security of your accounts, remember to always sign out at the end of each session and close your browser window.

To get started, visit For device specific instructions, go to and search for the type of device that you are enrolling (e.g. Anroid, iphone). Student file storage As a Buffalo State student, you have a couple of options for storing your important files. These options are described below: Campus network storage All Buffalo State students get 1GB of storage space on the campus network. Your personal network drive is accessible from any computer on campus, but is not accessible from off campus. From a Windows lab computer, simply login and navigate to your Documents folder or your Z: Drive. From a Mac lab computer, an icon for your network drive can be found on the Dock. Online storage (Google Docs) As an alternative to storing your files on your personal network drive, you can also store your documents, spreadsheets and presentations online in the cloud with Google Docs. To access Google Docs, login to your Gmail account and click Documents at the top. You can upload existing MS Office files, create Google documents, spreadsheets and presentations, and share your files with others. Your Google Apps account gives you 25GB of online storage space for your , files, videos and websites. To learn more visit:

9 P a g e 7 Warning! If you are working on a campus computer, remember to never save your files on the computer s hard drive. Any files saved in the Documents folder or on the Desktop will be erased when you log off. Always save your files to your personal network drive, Google Docs or a removable disk (e.g. USB flash drive). Student web storage As Buffalo State student, you have a couple of options for creating a personal web page. These options are described below: Campus web storage Buffalo State provides web storage space for students to create and store a personal website. To create a website, just save your pages inside your Web folder, which is a subfolder of your personal network folder (Z: drive). When you double-click on the Web folder, you will notice a few default files, including one called index.html or index.htm. This is the file you will edit or overwrite to create your homepage. You can build your website using HTML or an HTML editor with which you are familiar. Viewing your web page on the Internet To view your website online, open a browser window and go to the address below (remember to replace username in the address path with your Buffalo State username). Please Note If you have trouble viewing your website, or need assistance uploading/copying your HTML files to your Web folder, stop by the RITE Support Desk in Butler Library for assistance. If you need help with creating your website, you must to contact your instructor for assistance. Google Sites As an alternative to using your campus web folder, you can also use Google Sites to create your website. To access Google Sites, login to your Gmail account and click Sites at the top. To learn more visit: Student policy Purpose The Buffalo State campus community is increasingly dependent upon electronic communication among faculty, staff and students. Because of its convenience, cost-effectiveness and speed, has replaced much of the paper correspondence of the past. Because of this acceptance of and reliance upon electronic communication, is considered an official form of communication at Buffalo State. A student s campus-assigned address will be the only one recognized by the campus for official mailings. While students have had access to campus for some time, this policy is intended to ensure that students effectively utilize this efficient form of campus communication.

10 P a g e 8 Summary This policy includes the following guidelines: Policy Student addresses Access to Expectations regarding student use of Acceptable use Student addresses Computing and Technology Services (CTS) will assign to all students an official campus address. All college communication will be sent to this address, and this official address is the one that will be listed in the Student Directory. Access to CTS will ensure that student will be accessible from all networked lab computers on campus, and from any off-campus computer with access to the Internet. Expectations regarding student use of Students are expected to check their campus on a regular basis. The college recommends a minimum of once per week, as some communications (such as assignment-related correspondence from faculty) may be time dependent. Faculty and staff may expect that student's official addresses are being accessed and may use for their courses or for providing information to students. Acceptable use Students must take all reasonable precautions, including safeguarding and changing passwords, to prevent the use of their accounts by unauthorized individuals. All college use of will be consistent with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 (FERPA). shall not be the sole method of communication of any legal action. should not be considered appropriate for transmitting sensitive or confidential information.
