3 What is S.T.E.M? STEM is an acronym referring to the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics. STEM education is an intentional, integrative approach to teaching and learning learning. STEM develops students critical thinking, problem-solving, and collaboration abilities, while strengthening understanding of science, technology, engineering, and math concepts.

9 Why Focus on STEM? Supply and Demand STEM occupations are projected to grow by 17.0 percent from 2008 to 2018, compared to 9.8 percent growth for non- STEM occupations. (U.S. Department of Commerce Economics & Statistics Administration) Projected that 779,000 jobs will be available between 2008 and 2018 that require a graduate degree in a STEM field. Based on current trends, only 550,000 Americans will earn STEM graduate degrees during this period. (Georgetown University s Center on Education and the Workforce )

Timeline STEM Program Review Completion Summer and Early Fall: Review and Analysis of K-12 STEM Curriculum Documentation October and November: STEM Review Team will conduct site visits which include classroom visits and teacher focus-groups End of January: Anticipated date of written report from STEM Review Team Next Steps February-May: Create a shared vision and 3-5 year short and long term action plan for STEM education Involve Administration, Teachers, Students, Parents, Community Organizations & Businesses, Colleges and Universities
