1 6 12 Applied Arts and High School Photography and Graphic Arts Curriculum Study Report EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Purpose of Report: To provide the School Board with information regarding the 6-12 applied arts and high school photography and graphic arts curriculum review and to recommend curriculum adoption for the school year. More than a year of research, study and collaboration by parents, community members, teachers and administrators has led to the development of Applied Arts, High School Photography and Graphic Arts curriculum for the school year. The curriculum study began in the fall of 2012 as the 6-12 Steering Committee met regularly to study the best practices in instruction and to discuss the elements that would be expected in a quality applied arts program. While state and national standards will guide teachers in what is taught, the committee-developed vision, mission and goal statements will guide teachers in how to teach. Today s career and technical education (CTE) and applied arts courses are rigorous and relevant in preparing students for high-wage, high-skill and high-demand careers. At the middle school level, CTE courses focus on science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) modules in areas like robotics, electronics, forensic science and more. Introductory applied arts courses are offered at the traditional high school buildings while more advanced classes are offered at the CTE Academy. New courses for the school year were also developed as a part of the new curriculum. Administrative Recommendation to School Board: Approve the 6-12 applied arts and high school photography and graphic arts curriculum adoption for the school year. Report Prepared by: Curriculum Services January 27, 2014
2 6-12 Applied Arts and High School Photography and Graphic Arts Curriculum Study Report Purpose of Report: To provide the School Board with information regarding the 6-12 applied arts and high school photography and graphic arts curriculum review and to recommend curriculum adoption for the school year. District Priority Area: Student Achievement Goal: All students will improve content skills to achieve high standards. Strategy: SA3.1 Identify the high school delivery model and assessment options for photography and graphic arts. SA3.2 Identify the middle and high school applied arts curriculum delivery model and assessment options. Explanation: Today s cutting-edge, rigorous and relevant Career and Technical Education (CTE) prepares students for a wide range of high-wage, high-skill, high-demand careers. Today s applied arts courses are evolving to meet the needs of students and employers in the 21 st century. South Dakota recognizes 16 career clusters. Career clusters are designed to help students acquire the knowledge and skills they need to reach their postsecondary and career goals. CTE prepares students for a wide range of careers that may require varying levels of education from high school to postsecondary certificates to two- and four-year college degrees. The applied arts and high school photography and graphic arts curriculum study began in the fall of 2012 as the 6-12 Steering Committee (teachers, administrators, parents, and community members) met regularly throughout the school year to study best practices in instruction and to discuss the elements that would be expected in a quality applied arts program. The committee then used this information to create a vision statement, mission statement, and goal statements. While the standards will guide teachers in what is taught, these three statements will guide teachers in how to teach. Career and technical readiness requires a comprehensive system of supports that deliver learning when it is needed, where it is needed, how it is needed, and by teachers as experts in their field. It includes both classroom and workplace experiences, highquality standards and instructional materials to support learning along with multiple measures of assessments that determine progress and achievement. Report Prepared by: Curriculum Services January 27, 2014
3 Middle School The middle school Career and Technical Education curriculum is offered as part of the encore or exploratory program. All 6 th and 7 th grade students take one quarter of CTE, and 8 th grade students may select CTE as a semester elective encore class. The curriculum utilizes the Moss Enterprise STEM software and modules. Each module places heavy emphasis on careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). Students work in pairs and rotate through the modules. Each software-based, hands-on module requires students to communicate, think critically, and problem solve as a team. The middle school CTE curriculum aligns to many of the classes at the CTE Academy and the modules include topics such as robotics, forensic science, motion and force, engines, rocketry, electronics, aviation, engineering, Computer Numerical Control (CNC) manufacturing, broadcast journalism, Computer Assisted Design and Drafting (CADD), and digital transformation. The 8 th grade CTE class includes a woodworking project, where the students make a folding chair using woodworking tools. The new curriculum resources include 3D printers, updated robotics kits, a Mobile Apps module, and a Video Production module. In the Mobile Apps module student learn the basics of programming and app design, and in the Video Production module students use a green screen to produce videos. Through Perkins Grant funding, all of the middle school CTE teachers attend the annual South Dakota CTE conference, and two middle school teachers attend the National Career and Technical Education conference each year. The table below shows the projected expenditures for the middle school CTE curriculum resources. 4 High School Applied Arts curriculum has many course offerings at the high school level. The Career Technical Academy offers the advanced Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. Introductory courses are offered at all high schools with some also offered at the CTE Academy. By offering the introductory courses at the high schools, students can complete an applied arts course to determine if the content and skills learned is an area they would like to continue pursue. With courses taught at four different sites, one main accomplishment of this study was to create a consistent curriculum among all buildings. To do this, teachers met according to the courses they taught to place South Dakota Technical Education standards into the course curriculum. Then teachers completed a list of materials needed and created a pacing guide to establish a timeframe for each topic. Establishing pacing guides was critical. Since students continue to take advanced courses in certain content areas, the teacher of the next level needs to have a deep understanding of what students know and should be able to do. Several teachers attended the National Career and Technical Education conference in December and others serve on various state committees. Professional development offered for approved CTE program teachers is funded through the Perkins Grant. During the year of implementation, teachers will create common formative assessments for each course. These assessments will help to monitor student learning across the District. The table below lists the courses, resources needed, and cost of the resources for each Applied Arts course along with photography and graphic arts. The teachers of the courses listed in the table below spent time updating the curriculum. State-approved CTE courses can also qualify for funds from the Perkins Grant annually. These dollars enables equipment and resources to be updated more often than with the scheduled curriculum study. 6 Committee Participation: The twenty-member 6-12 Applied Arts Steering Committee was comprised of parents and community members, classroom teachers, special education teachers, English Language Learner teachers, and building and central office administrators. The committee began the review process in September, 2012 and met five times through the school year. Committee participation rate ranged between %. The middle/high school regular education and special education instructional level subcommittees (with approximately 100 total members) met once a month starting in January Costs: The total cost of the curriculum adoption is $797,300. All costs were budgeted for and approved as part of the FY14 budget. Summary: The middle school and high school instructional level subcommittees, under guidance from the 6-12 Applied Arts Steering Committee, reviewed the applied arts standards in preparation for this study. The 6 12 applied arts curriculum, aligned to these standards, will support teachers in developing students who are challenged by rigor, engaged by relevance, and educated through hands-on learning. Materials are available for review by teachers, parents, and community members at the Instructional Planning Center. Administrative Recommendation to School Board: Approve the 6-12 applied arts, and high school photography and graphic arts curriculum adoption for the school year.
