1 Department of Computer Science Computer Science Degrees at Southeast Missouri State Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems The majors offered through the Department of Computer Science are the most computer-intensive programs at Southeast Missouri State University. The Department offers 2 degrees: Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (BSCS) Bachelor of Science in Computer Information Systems (BSCIS) The goal of both degrees is the education of software developers the people who create the software tools and systems that are used by others. Computer Science (CS) is an ABET-accredited program which focuses more deeply on the scientific, engineering, and theoretical aspects of computing while Computer Information Systems (CIS) towards software development in focused application areas. Thus the BSCS has more rigorous mathematics, science and upper-level computer science courses, while the BSCIS has more course choices either for applying computers in different areas or for specializing in different computing disciplines. Minors in computer science and information systems are also available. Additionally the BSCIS has recently undergone major changes (effective Fall 2012) so that it can offer greater flexibility through 4 different tracks; 3 of which focus on specific application areas and require a specific minor: Business Administration Track Multimedia Computing Track IT Services Track Applications Development Track (Minor: Business Administration) (Minor: Graphic Communications Technology) (Minor: Computer Networking) (see below) In the Applications Development Track, the students will be advised by faculty to choose a set of courses for specializing in areas such as web or video game development, which may include taking a minor. BSCIS students take a 124-hour program which includes, apart from general education courses: 40 semester hours of a required core of information systems and computer science, 6 hours of mathematics courses (applied calculus and probability & statistics), and hours of supplemental courses and either a minor or a set of advised courses. Frequently asked questions about employment opportunities: Which companies that hire your graduates? They include Microsoft, Boeing, AT&T, Edward Jones, and Maritz. What about summer internships? Several of our students do internships with companies interested in hiring our graduates, or at schools with summer research programs funded by the National Science Foundation. For more information on the CS Department programs, please contact us at [email protected] or
