Statements & Search Criteria Mission "To enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens." Through a variety of academic and recreational programs, Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis empower members to make productive use of their time and wise decisions in their lives. It s how we re opening doors for Memphis kids every day, at the positive place for kids. Background For more than 150 years, Boys & Girls Clubs have served young people most in need, helping them develop the skills and abilities to become caring, responsible and productive citizens. More than 4,100 Clubs are located in public housing and public schools, on Native lands, in rural areas and inner cities wherever kids need us most. Each year, nearly 4 million young people enter the doors of a Boys & Girls Club or a BGCA-affiliated Youth Center on a U.S. military installation. Clubs serve an ethnically diverse population of boys and girls ages 6 to 18. Sixty-five percent of Club youth are eligible for free- or reduced-price school lunches, an important indicator of low-income status, compared to 50 percent of public school students nationally. 2
Impact The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis Change Lives Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCM) is committed to measuring how much our young people are achieving and how effectively our Club Experience is implemented. Our measurement efforts are aimed at demonstrating our impact to stakeholders and uncovering ways to improve our services. Our doors are always open and no child is ever turned away Membership dues are just $10 per person No child is ever turned away We recognize each child s individual needs Mentors work one-on-one with each child Boys & Girls Club Staff are professionally trained We believe, and have demonstrated, that positive influences work! Did You Know... More than 82% of each dollar we raise goes directly to programs for our kids. In neighborhoods where there is a Boys & Girls Club present, there is a 25% reduction in the presence of crack cocaine, a 22% reduction in overall drug activity, and a 13% reduction in juvenile crime. More than 1000 teens have been employed through our Job Ready program, training them as future members of our adult workforce. Our Project Learn program increases overall GPA by 15%. 3
Needs Financial Support - Each of our members pays a membership fee of just $10 a year but no child is ever turned away. The actual cost of providing services for a child is more than $500 a year. You can help bridge the gap and open a door for a child by sponsoring them for just $50 a month. Give the gift of academic achievement, artistic expression, athletic competition and the career opportunities. Give the gift of becoming a member of the Boys & Girls Club Family! Program Supplies: The Clubs are in constant need of program supplies including but not limited to: backpacks, books, note books, paper, pens, art materials, sporting goods, school uniforms, computers, software, etc... CAPITAL CAMPAIGN The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis is committed to being a consistent, positive presence in the lives of our members during those critical hours after school. We have embarked on a Capital & Endowment Campaign so that we can sustain and enhance the level of service currently offered to our members in the face of economic challenges. The Capital & Endowment Campaign will secure funds to improve our services and ensure we can continue working to improve the Memphis community. For a list of projects click here: Areas Of Service Areas Served Areas TN - Shelby County The Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis serve more than 3,700 at-risk youth ages 6-18 who live in targeted areas of Memphis. The children we serve live in the most economically depressed areas within Shelby County. About 90% of our members reside in high poverty, high crime neighborhoods in the 38126, 38141, 38134, 38112, and zip codes. The vast majority of the youth (over 90 percent) who will participate in our Programs come from working class families who are at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. (The federal poverty threshold changes annually and varies by family size. According to the U.S. Census Bureau the threshold for a family of three with one child is about $18,750.) Many of these young people live in public housing properties managed by the Shelby County Housing Authority. The schools in the area struggle to address the basic educational needs of youth within the school day. Service Categories Boys and Girls Clubs (Combined) Elementary & Secondary Schools Recreational Clubs 4
Programs Programs Boys & Girls Clubs Youth Development Program- Formula for Impact Description BGCA clubs serve school-age youth through a variety of programs including homework assistance, technology centers, teen centers, career exploration, job assistance, sports and recreation, art classes and leadership development. In addition to program development, Boys & Girls Clubs of America provides programmatic and executive training for Club professionals nationwide. Budget $3,100, Strategy Long term Success BGCA complements its outcome measurement efforts with formal, thirdparty evaluation of programs to identify the essential components of highquality implementation and ensure that program design and content achieve desired outcomes. Short Term Success Helping Kids Grow Up Great We promote and enhance the development of boys and girls by instilling: A Sense of Belonging: A setting where young people know they fit and are accepted. A Sense of Power or Influence: A chance to be heard and to influence decisions. A Sense of Usefulness: The opportunity to do something of value for other people. A Sense of Competence: The feeling of pride in achieving goals. 5
Juice Plus+ Technical Training Center - Career Development and Training Program Description Budget $0.00 Memphis has pioneered a program to help train and place hardworking teens in part-time jobs and graduates in productive careers. Our Juice Plus+ Technical Training Center was the first of it s kind in the Boys & Girls Clubs of America. Here, students choose a career track from logistics, automotive, culinary, welding and coming soon, IT. They learn the skills they will need to enter the workforce while receiving training in the areas of customer service, money management, computer soft-skills and personal goal setting that will make them employees of choice. Career Tracks: AutoZone Automotive Program Culinary & Hospitality Logistics Welding Gardens to Groceries Information Technology Strategy Long term Success Short Term Success Currently, the Juice Plus+ Technical Center of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis enrolls students each year, with 100% of graduates going directly into jobs, college or the armed services. Students like Jatavius Benson attended the TTC because he wanted to learn more about business. According to Jatavius, "The TTC has helped me learn about a lot of things...i've learned how important it is to save money and budget, and I've learned the difference between wants and needs." Investment in Opportunity Though students only pay $10 a year to enroll at the TTC, a year of training actually cost about $2,400. For that amount we can place a trainee in a job, equip them to support themselves while attending college and set them on a successful path. We have been offered a dollar-fordollar match for monthly gifts made to our program. That means that your pledge of $100 a month will be doubled, providing full support for a student like Jatavius for an entire year! 6

Organization Comments There s power in numbers. And the more youth the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis can help, the better our city becomes. These kids consider the Boys & Girls Club in their neighborhood a second home. By sustaining our programs and enhancing our facilities, we can serve more kids, more often, in more clubs by becoming a permanent fixture in the communities we serve. Investing in children is an investment in the future of Memphis. For 50 years, members of the Boys & Girls Clubs have grown into leaders of local business like Shannon Brown of FedEx or diligent community servants like Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong. Why should you give to the Capital & Endowment Campaign? Because your gift can make an invaluable impact on thousands of kids lives and, in turn, the future of Memphis. The statistics you ll see throughout this brochure are powerful. But even more powerful are the stories of kids and now-flourishing adults behind those statistics. At the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis, change starts with one child, one story, one opportunity to impact a person s life for the better. The future is uncertain for so many youth here in Memphis. By supporting the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Memphis, you can be the difference and create better stories for these kids, and for our city.
