2 Applying for Grants APPLYING FOR AN ANNPOWER GRANT Participants of the ANNpower Vital Voices Leadership Forum have a unique opportunity to learn first-hand from established and inspiring women leaders from around the world. Once ANNpower Fellows depart from Washington, DC equipped with leadership skills and a network of rising leaders from across the United States they are charged with going back to their communities to pay it forward at the local level. To support these efforts, the ANNpower Vital Voices Initiative is pleased to offer several grants of up to $2,500 to help turn your ideas into action. All 2013 ANNpower Fellows are encouraged to apply for an ANNpower Grant. Past grants, implemented by the 2011 and 2012 ANNpower Grantees, took on significant community-based challenges. For example, Emily in Kentucky is working with local chefs to organize culinary classes to teach families easy, healthy recipes. In Colorado, Monica is mentoring girls and showing them that women should choose careers in science, technology and math fields. Clare is helping youth use art to build awareness for social issues that are important to her community. Each ANNpower Grantee took an issue she was passionate about and came up with an idea to create a solution! 3 APPLYING FOR AN ANNPOWER GRANT When can I apply for an ANNpower Grant? The application period for submitting an ANNpower Grant proposal will be in Summer ANNpower Projects that receive grant funding must be implemented starting Fall 2013 through Spring What makes a strong project proposal? Proposals that offer measurable change, have a community focus, include long-term problemsolving action, and are creative and diverse will be strongly considered. In your project proposal, you ll outline what issue you want to tackle, why it s important, and the specifics of your action plan. You ll also need to submit an itemized budget, demonstrating that you ve done your research and plan to use your grant funds to support your project goals. Remember no project proposal will be able to receive more than $2,500 in funding. Additionally, strong project proposals will also demonstrate the Fellows ability to put the Vital Voices Leadership Model principles into practice. Check out the Planning Your Project guide for more helpful tips. Who will evaluate my project proposal? The teams from Vital Voices and ANN INC., along with the ANNpower Advisory Council, will score grant proposals. What types of projects cannot receive grant funding? Unfortunately, project grant funds will not be allocated forany type of fundraising event or activity, raffles or auctions, travel costs, individual sponsorships, scholarships or school fees. Additionally, project grant funds will not be given to support organizations that have religious, political, or advocacy affiliations; sports teams; local schools; and/or fraternal organizations. Finally, project grant funds are not transferrable and cannot be passed on to other charitable organizations. Once I receive a grant, what are my responsibilities? As an ANNpower Grantee, you ll be responsible for fulfilling Vital Voices grant management requirements. These requirements include submitting two formal reports on the progress of your project, your itemized budget, and any changes that you make to the original project proposal. We will give you all the tools and templates you need to do this! Additionally, you ll be expected to communicate with us regularly, and be open and honest if you are facing challenges in your project. We re here to help! What kind of support will be available to me once I receive a grant? As a Fellow, the ANNpower Team will be with you every step of the way. We can help you to brainstorm to overcome challenges you may face, guide you as you look for new opportunities or approaches, and connect you to resources in our networks. You ll be able to seek advice from your ANNpower Mentors and others in the program, as well as the entire ANNpower Network.

4 2012 Grantees ALANA Theatre Connection My project will pair high school volunteers and teens with special needs, and together they will create and perform an original play in their community. BEEMNET Changing Minds Changing Minds will provide academic and social support to immigrant students at my high school in the form of peer to peer mentorship, facilitated parent-teacher and parentstudent conferences, and weekly gatherings. CLARE Fighting Injustice Through Youth Art My project engages teenagers in social justice and global awareness through public art. Each month volunteer youth artists will create an art piece to raise awareness about a community issue and will then display their artwork throughout Seattle, Washington.

5 DIANA Proyecto Educación Proyecto Educación will bring high school students to Guatemala for four weeks to teach math and English to low-income youth. My project aims to promote the value of education as a stepping stone for a successful future to the youth in El Triunfo. EMILY Cooking up a Change My program teaches underprivileged families healthy eating habits through informative cooking classes. EMILY Youth Empowerment through Community Service Organize students at my high school to make a positive impact through year-long community service projects. My high school will then connect with six other high schools in the region to plan and implement a large scale community service project.

6 HANNA The Girls Leadership Network Summit The Global Leadership Network Summit will bring together high school girls and local and national female leaders in a day-long event promoting leadership, mentoring, and networking. The goal is to inspire young girls to pursue leadership positions in their community and around the world. MAHSHEED Afghan Youth Reading Association The Afghan Youth Reading Association is a book club that will bring together high school students with the goal of increasing members tolerance and respect for religious, cultural, and ethnic differences and raise awareness about social issues in Afghanistan. MONICA Bridging the Gender Gap in the Field of Technology My project will invite 4th and 5th grade girls to an introductory workshop on technology and technical careers. The workshop will include hands-on activities that build participants confidence in their technical skills, and provide a support network. The workshop will include training on how to deal with the gender gap in both the classroom and the workforce..

7 RACHEL Kids Meeting Point Kids Meeting Point is an online magazine and discussion forum to encourage and foster cross cultural understanding among middle school children. The magazine, accessible online at KidsMeetingPoint.com, will educate youth about different cultures through key facts, educational games, recipes, and music. ROSHNI Teen Court Volunteer Leadership Development My program will provide Teen Court youth volunteers with leadership training so that the Teen Court system will be more successful in serving at-risk youth and lowering recidivism rates in Indianapolis. SAVANNAH S*H*O*W (Stage Housed On Wheels) Construct a S*H*O*W (Stage Housed On Wheels) for at-risk youth participating in drama classes at the Neighborhood Resource Center in Richmond, Virginia. The S*H*O*W piece will be a mobile tool to develop creativity through theater.

8 SYDNEY The Metro Review Create and sell The Metro Review, a literary magazine whose profits will be used to buy books for under-privileged children. My project aims to increase literacy in St. Louis while also providing a platform for writers to use their voice to effect social change. YUYI Free2bFemale My program will provide free feminine hygiene products to financially disadvantaged women and girls, in collaboration with a local women s center.
