3 CLINICALS: Clinicals are planned daily beginning in February of Clinicals will be held at The Orchard long term care facility in Warsaw, VA. Students who are failing or are unsatisfactory in skills will not be permitted to go to clinicals. Instructors/administration also reserve the right to prevent students from attending clinicals based on discipline or behavior issues. CLINICAL PROCEDURES: 1. Students must have a completed and approved criminal background check through certifiedbackground.com, a negative Tuberculin skin test (PPD), CPR certification, flu vaccine, and proper immunization documentation by December 1, The PPD test is a 2 part test. Also students must fill out an application for clinical placement through the Riverside Health System(see attached). Lastly students are required to complete Temp-Up For Safety training through Riverside Heath System. 2. Students must be neatly dressed in uniform and name tag in order to go to clinicals each day. The uniform is scrub top (ordered through school) and white uniform pants, white tennis shoes or uniform shoes, white socks( all of which can be purchased by student on own). No croc style shoes with holes in top allowed. Students who are not dressed out appropriately on clinical days will not be allowed to go and will receive a zero for that day. 3. Hair longer than shoulder length must be pulled back and hairstyle must be neat and not interfere with work. 4. Jewelry is to be kept to a minimum. A watch is acceptable and earrings must not be loops or dangles. They are a work hazard. One to two rings that are small and fit close to the finger are acceptable, but must not interfere with work or with the wearing or gloves. 5. Fingernails must be kept short and clean. NO ARTIFICIAL NAILS OR BRIGHT FINGERNAIL POLISH ALLOWED! This is a facility policy as well as an infection control measure. 6. Students are expected to maintain a professional attitude and treat all staff, residents, classmates, and instructor with courtesy and respect. No profanity or obscene language. No inappropriate conversation. 7. We are a guest at the facility in which we are working. Therefore we will also follow all facility rules and guidelines. 8. The student is not, under any circumstances, allowed to discuss anything about residents in the facility outside of the clinical or classroom setting. The student is not to acknowledge the presence of a resident in the facility. The appropriate response to any questions about who is there and how they are doing is this, that is a breach of confidentiality and I am not allowed to answer questions about residents. 9. Always ask for help appropriately. Students are all learning and performing new skills. It is better to ask for help when you are uncertain than to risk harming a resident.
4 10. There will be at least one full day of clinical required as this is a state requirement. Students will be asked to obtain permission from the home school and their parents. 11. Assignments and partners are at the discretion of the instructor and based on the skills the students need to learn. A student may NOT choose their own assignment or partner. A student may NOT refuse an assignment or partner without a valid reason. All refusals made by students will be referred to NNTC principal or assistant principal for disciplinary action. SKILLS CHECKLIST: Students will be evaluated in laboratory and clinical settings on particular skills. The skills checklist is attached. Students will receive an S or U representing satisfactory or unsatisfactory performance. A skills checklist is required by the Virginia Board of Nursing and is helpful for new completers seeking employment. COMPETENCY LIST: The attached competency list for Nurses Aide I, II (8360, 8362) is a requirement by the Virginia Board of Education. The competency list is kept and maintained by the instructor on each individual student as the task/competency is taught. Students are given a rating of 1-5 (see list) according to their level of performance. Students are required to be competent in at least 80% of the listed competencies. Failure to do so will result in not passing the course. VIRGINIA STATE BOARD EXAM FOR NURSING AIDES: Upon satisfactory completion of all requirements of the course including at least 120 classroom hours and 40 clinical hours and a passing grade the student will be eligible to take the state board exam for licensure. If the student passes the state board, he/she will be recognized as a CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT. Detailed information on the state board exam and testing information will be given in class. All students are expected to take the state board exams that are eligible. WORKPLACE READINESS CERTIFICATION: All students will be required to take a workplace readiness pretest which will highlight key elements that may help a student to prepare for the workplace and all that it entails. This will also help the teacher to assess what areas students need further instruction on in regards to work preparedness. Selected students may be chosen for the workplace readiness posttest for which they could earn a certification.
