Release Overview 1 Release Overview Introduction This document contains information for release 6.00 of the Kodak SmartBoard document mastering software. The information is organized as follows: 0 An overview of the SmartBoard 6.00 software release. 0 General troubleshooting tips. 0 Helpful hints designed to increase ease of use for users of the software, including action to avoid when using the software. 0 Known problems with the release along with recommended workarounds. 0 Problems fixed in this release. 0 Summary of the SmartBoard document mastering 6.00 feature set. Release Overview 2 The Kodak SmartBoard 6.00 release is the latest generation of the document mastering software. The Kodak SmartBoard software can be licensed for blank-and-white (mono) support or both black-and-white (mono) and color support. The SmartBoard dongle, a hardware key, determines which functionality is available. Note: The Kodak SmartBoard 6.00 software requires a SmartBoard 6.00 dongle. If a 6.00 dongle is not detected then SmartBoard will attempt to run in Standard Edition (SE) mode. When SmartBoard 6.00 is licensed for both blank-and-white and color, you can use SmartBoard to ticket and submit jobs to the Kodak digital production color presses (referred to as the S Series, compatible with the Kodak NexPress front end, system 9.0 or higher), the Kodak M700 digital production color press (referred to as the M Series - compatible with the Kodak M700 digital front end system version 9.0 and higher), or the Kodak black and white digital production system printer (Digimaster version 7.01 and higher). The Kodak SmartBoard document mastering 6.00 software requires Adobe Acrobat Professional (or Standard) 9.3.x software. A copy of Adobe Acrobat 9.0 Professional is packaged with the SmartBoard 6.00 product. Highlight of New Features SmartBoard 6.00 is compatible with Adobe Acrobat 9.0. A licensed copy of Acrobat 9.0 is packaged with the SmartBoard 6.00 product. SmartBoard 6.00 is now compatible with the Windows 7 operating system. Customer Release Notes 1 1
Release Overview Compatibility Print Production software SmartBoard 6.00 is compatible with print production software 7.01 or higher for the monochrome digital production printer. It is also compatible with NexPress front end software version 9.0 and above for the digital color presses (S Series and M Series). Adobe Acrobat The SmartBoard 6.00 software requires Adobe Acrobat Professional (or Standard) software version 9.x, and a SmartBoard dongle. The dongle is used to determine if the software is licensed for monochrome only or for both monochrome and color support. If a 6.00 dongle is not detected, then SmartBoard will attempt to run in SE mode. Microsoft Vista and Windows 7 operating systems With respect to operating systems supported, SmartBoard 6.00 can run on the Microsoft Vista or Windows 7 operating systems. Once user permissions are set up for internal use, SmartBoard should work as it normally does on any other Windows system. It is important for SmartBoard users to configure their environment according to the access rules they require. It is the responsibility of the IT group to configure an environment where SmartBoard templates can be shared and restrictions on access provide limits for certain users. One example of how to setup SmartBoard on Windows is to create a user group on the PC where SmartBoard will be used and add each user that will be using SmartBoard to that group. Then, in the appropriate application data directory, most likely "C:\\ProgramData\Kodak", apply the SmartBoard user group privileges to the SmartBoard directory and all child objects using the Windows Explorer -> Properties -> Security tab. There are some situations where it is important that SmartBoard be launched with the "run as administrator" option available from the right-mouse-click menu on the SmartBoard icon. Those situations will be noted in these release notes. Upgrades SmartBoard 6.00 fully supports upgrades from SmartBoard version 4.x and 5.x. See the SmartBoard Installation Guide for instructions for maintaining your SmartBoard version 4.x templates. They must be copied from one location to another in order for SmartBoard 6.00 to utilize them. SmartBoard 5.x to 6.00 upgrades do not require any special steps; the templates will be recognized and utilized by the 6.00 software automatically. In SmartBoard 4.0, the System Default (Color) job ticket template and the System Default (Monochrome) job ticket template existed as separate files. When upgrading to SmartBoard 6.00, these templates will still exist but will be treated as ordinary templates. There is no automatic combining of settings from the System Default Monochrome and System Default Color templates into the 6.00 System Default template. 1 2 Edition: April 8, 2010
Release Overview To make sure that the SmartBoard 6.00 System Default job ticket template contains the correct settings for a particular device, edit the 6.00 System Default job ticket template, set the job Device Type and retrieve settings as needed to populate the default values for each active device from the System Default Color template and the System Default Monochrome template respectively. SmartBoard SE Mode SmartBoard 6.00 document mastering software can be run in Standard Edition (SE) mode when a dongle is not present. In this case, the SE code determines the functionality available in SE mode: monochrome or monochrome and color. The SE code can be obtained from the fully licensed SmartBoard owner (e.g. version running with the dongle). The SE code can be determined by selecting Help -> About SmartBoard and then clicking the More button. An SE code is remembered across user sessions so it only needs to be entered the first time the software is installed and run without a dongle. When running in SE mode: 0 A "SmartBoard" watermark will appear on every printed page. 0 An "X" will be placed on all created tab labels. 0 An "X" will be placed across each page of a Work and Turn document. 0 An "X" will be added to edited images (i.e. image content is modified). 2 The full SmartBoard document mastering product, with a SmartBoard USB dongle, is required to submit print jobs created using SmartBoard SE mode. The printed output will not be watermarked and the "X" can be easily removed from tab labels and Work and Turn documents. Note: If using SmartBoard SE mode to set up print jobs, avoid image editing since the "X" added to an edited image modifies the image content and cannot be removed by the SmartBoard document mastering software. Also, if Work and Turn is applied when running in SE mode, a new document is created with an "X" across each page. The "X" can be removed using SmartBoard document mastering software. SmartBoard SE mode can be used in collaboration with the full SmartBoard product. Owners of SmartBoard 6.00 document mastering software (with dongle) can: 0 Share copies of the software with key customers. If customers have Adobe Acrobat 9.x, they can run SmartBoard in SE mode to do job setup and proofing. 0 Deploy SmartBoard document mastering software internally within a print shop for use in SE mode to distribute prepress work across multiple workstations. 11 Troubleshooting 2 Troubleshooting General Tips The table below contains troubleshooting tips. This table does not reflect a detailed list of known problems, but should be used as a general guideline if you encounter the noted symptoms: Symptom Try This When running SmartBoard with Acrobat 9.0, This has been a change in Acrobat since the SmartBoard is not docked to the Acrobat window. SmartBoard window are 8.0 release. Each open document and the independent. Receive an error message indicating that there is a Job Tracker.exe application error. [Color] When opening a PDF document, SmartBoard and Acrobat abnormally terminate. [Color] Documents submitted from Smart- Board to a Nexpress digital production color press do not show up correctly or in some cases do not show up at all. Unable to import an image via the Image Editor or Frame Tool. [Mono] When scanning and printing, the RIP performance seems to be significantly degraded. Some fonts do not print correctly. It is likely that the.net Framework is not installed. Go to Add/Remove Programs to check if the.net 1.1 Framework is installed. If it is not present, then go ahead and install the.net Framework. It can be installed either from the SmartBoard media CD or from website. To find the.net redistributive download on the Microsoft website, search on ".Net Framework version 1.1". Check if the Nexpress front end Imposition Viewer plug-in is installed on the same system (check under the Acrobat Plug-Ins menu). If so, it is likely that the Imposition Viewer is having an issue with a corrupt file. To work around this situation, delete the C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 9.0\Acrobat\plug_ins\nexpress\preferences.xml file and restart Acrobat. Check if the definition for the color press destination is using a Submission Method of JDF Portal (look under SmartBoard Preferences -> Printer Setup -> Color Press tab). If so, verify that the Submission Path only contains alphanumeric characters (no spaces or other characters). If Enfocus Pitstop is installed on your system, make sure you have the latest version. Make sure that the deskew filter on the Scan dialog is disabled. Refer to the scanning tips in the Helpful Hints of this document. Some applications do not use the correct typeface for bold characters. Instead, the characters are double or triple printed with a small shift (fake bold). This may cause problems when these documents are imposed using the Work and Turn feature in Smart- Board. Customer Release Notes 2 1
Troubleshooting Symptom [Color] SmartBoard/Acrobat abnormally terminates when attempting to save a Page Feature template with the Color Page option set to "Yes - Print to Color Press". SmartBoard is not visible (Adobe Acrobat fills the full screen) SmartBoard is running in SE mode even though the dongle is present. [Mono] When using Direct Print or Batch print to submit a monochrome document for printing, you get a message indicating that there is no printer available. Can t tell if the system is initializing on startup Try This Determine if Printable Fusion Pro is installed on the same system. There is a known issue with Fusion Pro relative to processing Acrobat events when a document is only open without displaying its contents in Acrobat. To work around this issue, avoid creating Page Feature templates with the "Yes - Print to Color Press" option enabled for the Color Page setting and manually tag pages to apply the setting rather than use a Page Feature template. The first time you open SmartBoard, Adobe Acrobat will open full screen and Smart- Board will not be visible. To view SmartBoard in Acrobat, click the Restore button or Smart- Board button. You will need to do this after SmartBoard is installed for the first time, or after you maximize Adobe Acrobat. If this is not the first time SmartBoard has been opened, SmartBoard initialization may have been delayed or SmartBoard may be hidden. In Acrobat, click to the right of the Smart- Board icon to see what options are available. If Show is available, click Show. If Initialize is displayed, close all open documents and select Initialize. If this problem is encountered the first time after SmartBoard 6.00 is installed, it is likely that the dongle driver was not installed. Install the dongle driver per the directions in the SmartBoard 6.00 Installation Guide (W827). You need to install a black-and-white digital print production system print driver or PPD. By default, the Acrobat splash screen is off when Acrobat/SmartBoard is started. It can be turned on in Acrobat s Preference settings (General -> Show Splash Screen). Once that change is made, it is very obvious that Acrobat is starting, and the user can also see progress as the different plug-ins get initialized. 2 2 Edition: April 8, 2010
Troubleshooting Symptom Try This Japanese fonts displayed as square characters If SmartBoard is run in Japanese on a non- Japanese operating system, the Asian language package must be installed on the system in order to have the Japanese fonts displayed correctly. The Asian language package is not installed by SmartBoard, but can be installed through Control Panel -> Regional Settings. Customer Release Notes 2 3
Troubleshooting Helpful Hints General Adobe Acrobat With respect to Acrobat Distiller Adobe PDF Settings, for monochrome documents use settings that do not downsample below 600 dpi (e.g. use "High Quality" or your own custom settings). For color documents use settings that are appropriate for the image content. Do not use signed document or PDF documents certified with Adobe Acrobat with SmartBoard. When opening a certified or signed document, SmartBoard will apply the default Job Ticket, and will therefore invalidate the signature/certificate. When scanning with Acrobat, select a lossless compression setting if you want to perform image editing or want the best possible image quality. Operating System SmartBoard expects to find the System Default Job Ticket Template in the directory that contains the Job Ticket templates. When this file is not present, SmartBoard tries to create it. This does not work in a directory that is marked as "read-only". SmartBoard needs to be run from a user account that has write access to the Job Ticket Template directory. Note that in Windows Vista and Windows 7, it may be necessary to launch SmartBoard using the "Run as administrator" function available from the right-mouseclick menu of the icon. This will give the user the permissions necessary to write files to locations that are otherwise forbidden. Do not open multiple PDF documents simultaneously via the operating system. When opening multiple PDF documents by selecting them in Windows Explorer, Acrobat may not open all of the selected files. This is a problem independent of SmartBoard. Use the File -> Open mechanism to open files. Do not use the Windows file system to change the name of or delete SmartBoard template files or the paper catalog file. Change the names of these files, or delete them, from within SmartBoard only. 2 4 Edition: April 8, 2010
Troubleshooting Template Files The Page Features template file is created automatically the first time you open SmartBoard and the following message is displayed: " Page Features template file cannot be opened. A new Page Feature template file will be created". Click OK to acknowledge the message. The Tab Creator templates are created automatically the first time you open SmartBoard. They are also created automatically the first time you run SmartBoard after deleting tab-related templates. In either case, the following message is displayed: " Tab template default file(s) cannot be opened. Tab template default file(s) will be created". Click OK to acknowledge the message. When sharing a Page Features template file, do not modify the file when it is in use. When the Page Features template file is stored on a server, it should be read-only, so that individual users cannot change the file. Changes to the file should be managed by the Administrator. One PDF file cannot be opened in Read/Write mode by more than one user at a time. Preferences Paper Catalog Work and Turn, Grid When changing the language setting in SmartBoard Preferences, the media catalog language is not automatically changed. The language setting at install time determines the media catalog language. If Acrobat terminates while the Paper Catalog is being edited, a Paper Catalog lock file may not be removed correctly. No further editing can take place until this lock is removed. To manually remove the lock file, go to the directory the Paper Catalog is stored in and remove the file with the extension ".ELK". When using both the Work and Turn and Grid capabilities, perform the Work and Turn first, then apply a grid. Use SmartBoard Image Editor to edit images prior to performing Work and Turn for the most efficient and predictable outcome. When printing a document with a grid to a black-and-white digital production system printer, if the grid line color is not set to black the printer may not print every line the same way. The lighter the grayscale, the fewer the lines that will be visible. Customer Release Notes 2 5
Troubleshooting Image Editor When working with images in the Image Editor, use the Image Attributes feature for size, resolution, color space and bit depth of the image. The Image Editor is a touch-up tool. It does not take the place of applications such as Adobe Photoshop. Image Editor allows you to modify the image content of grayscale, RGB and CMYK images. It can edit images with Indexed color mapping, mainly Indexed RGB and Indexed CMYK images. Images in other formats should be modified using the original authoring application. Image Editor does not support editing of the following image formats: 0 CIE L*a*b images 0 Images with ICC Profiles 0 DeviceN images 0 Calibrated RGB 0 Calibrated Grayscale If the Image Editor indicates that it does not support the color space of a particular image, you can use the Modify Image Attributes menu to change the color space of the image to one that is supported. You will then be able to edit the image. The Image Editor supports Cut/Copy/Paste, replace, scale, mirror and rotate for all image types, regardless of their color space. Some TIFF 6.00 features are lost when importing TIFF s that use these features: 0 Transparency 0 Mask layers 0 ICC Profiles TIFF images with ZIP compression cannot be imported. Use Adobe Acrobat (File ->Create PDF -> From File) to import these images. When cutting/copying/pasting between images that have different resolutions, the images appear smaller or larger depending on their relative resolution. For example, if you paste a 1200 dpi image into a 600 dpi image, the 1200 dpi image will appear twice its normal size. Consider using a third party plug-in (e.g. Enfocus PitStop Professional or Quite a Box of Tricks) to modify the resolution of the images. Do not copy/cut/paste between 1-bit and 8-bit images. You may get unexpected results. For example, if you paste an 8 bit image into a 1 bit image, the image may appear inverted. If you should need to do this, first convert the 1 bit image to an 8 bit image (grayscale) using an external application such a Adobe Photoshop. 2 6 Edition: April 8, 2010
Troubleshooting Job Ticket When you open a PDF file that contains a SmartBoard job ticket, it validates the papers asked for against the current paper catalog. If the paper is not found, SmartBoard displays the Modify Papers screen. This screen gives you the opportunity to select new papers for the job based on what is currently available. There is an override function available for the Modify Papers screen. If you hold down the Alt key while clicking on the OK button, any paper is accepted without further validation. This action creates an invalid job ticket, but it allows you to open older SmartBoard jobs and to select new papers for it. If both Monochrome and Color devices are enabled, when updating a SmartBoard 5.x document job ticket to a SmartBoard 6.00 document job ticket, SmartBoard will always bring over the S Series color subjob settings and automatically create an active color subjob for an S Series device. If the S Series Subjob Device Type is not needed, set the Subjob Device type to None before saving the document job ticket. Make sure Color Knockout is enabled in color Job Tickets when setting up a black-andwhite job destined for the color press. You can view the JDF information for a given Job Ticket. To view this information, bring up the Job Ticket properties dialog and then hold down the ALT key while selecting the Summary button. The unformatted JDF information will be displayed. To view the JDF job ticket in a more user readable format, copy the complete content of the dialog and paste it into Wordpad. Once the file is saved as a text file with a.xml extension, it can be opened and viewed in a XML Viewer or editor or an XML capable browser. To retrieve document header (DSC/KDK) information from the monochrome Job Ticket, click the Summary button in the Job Ticket while holding down the ALT key. Tab Creator When using Tab Creator for labels that use characters outside of the Latin-1 character set, make sure that the correct fonts and CMap tables are installed, and that the correct font is selected in Tab Creator. This is usually done by installing the required fonts during the installation of Acrobat (e.g. for Japanese or Chinese fonts), or by installing the required language packs from the Adobe web site. The Tab Creator only supports one font selection for a set of tabs. Do not mix characters from different character sets in one tab set that cannot be rendered with the selected font (e.g. mathematical symbols from a symbol font with Japanese characters). Refer to the Kodak SmartBoard document mastering User Guide for information around how to successfully print bleed tabs to the color press. Actual die-cut tabs cannot be printed to the S Series presses. Customer Release Notes 2 7
Troubleshooting There is no relationship between the creation of color bleed tabs and the bleed settings in the color Job Ticket. When moving tabbed pages within a document maintain the relative tab order. When moving tabbed pages between documents, the associated excess tab definitions (if they exist) will move as well as long as they reside at the end of the document. Page Features When printing to the color devices, removing a stamp annotation from a page does not remove SmartBoard Page Features. Use SmartBoard to remove Page Features from a document. Do not submit a document with color Page Features by dropping it in a virtual printer hotfolder. Although the embedded SmartBoard Job Ticket will be ignored because it was not submitted via SmartBoard, the press will still honor the Page Features because of the stamp annotations in the document. If the back and front of a given sheet have different page copy count values, the page copy value of the back will be used when printing. Printing Before attempting to Batch print color documents, confirm that you are logged into a color press. Otherwise, there is a possibility that the first few files will error while SmartBoard prompts for logon password information. When printing to a color device (S Series or M Series) with a submission method of JDF Portal, the Submission Path can only contain alphanumeric characters. Spaces and other characters can cause a connection problem. Do not submit VDX documents as part of a batch print process when running in SE mode. This will cause only the first record of the VDX document to be printed, ignoring the rest of the records. The Printers tab on the Resource panel only lists printers that are connected to TCP/IP or LPR ports. Therefore, other output devices, such as spool folders, are not included in the list. 2 8 Edition: April 8, 2010
Troubleshooting Scanning To achieve the best print performance for scanned originals using the 65 ppm Production Scanner, the hardcopy should move through the scanner in the same direction that the paper moves through the printer. When scanning with Acrobat, disable all image manipulation filters on Acrobat s scan dialog. Customer Release Notes 2 9
Troubleshooting 2 10 Edition: April 8, 2010
3 Known Problems Known Problems new in SmartBoard 6.0 Known Problems SmartBoard does not display current name of open document If you do a Save As to a different document name, SmartBoard will not update the name of the document in the Jobs panel. Workaround: Close the file and reopen it to refresh the document name in the SmartBoard Jobs panel. Cannot change the media catalog location if the current location is on a color press that is turned off If the media catalog location specified in the Smartboard Preferences is pointing to a printer where the DFE is not powered on, you will not be able to change the media catalog lcation until that DFE is powered back on again. Workaround: none. SmartBoard initialization fails with "Unable to retrieve Substrate Catalog from DFE. A connection with server could not be established" message If media catalog Synchronization to a particular press is selected, and that press is down when SmartBoard tries to start, the SmartBoard initialization will fail. The device needs to be up in order for Synchronize to work. If the printer or press is down, SmartBoard may appear to hang or take longer than normal to open because it is attempting to access a device that is currently down. Workaround: Make the press available to SmartBoard. Or, remove the Synchronization to the media catalog so that SmartBoard does not try to establish connection to the press. VDX file print range may not be selectable If you open a VDX file in SmartBoard 6.0 that contains a job ticket from a previous release of SmartBoard, the Print Range displayed in Direct Print may not be selectable. Workaround: Change the Job Ticket at the DFE after submitting it to the press. Printer Setup, browse to Hot Folder not working In Windows 7, when setting up an S Series printer to print through a Hot Folder, you will need to type in the path to the press in order to identify the Hot Folder. Using the Browse button does not work. Also, you will be asked to log in to the press. Workaround: None Customer Release Notes 3 1
Known Problems Imposition Preview in the color Job Ticket is not accurate Depending on the imposition method selected in the color Job Ticket, the preview shown in the Imposition Preview button may not be correct. The image may be shifted out of the Preview window, or it may be missing. Workaround: None necessary. Content Edit at the DFE will display the imposition preview correctly, and the job will print correctly. Cannot access the last thumbnail of the job in the Pages navigation pane This problem was noted in Adobe Acrobat 9.3.1, and is not related to SmartBoard. In some situations, when you scroll down through the Pages navigation page, the last thumbnail is hidden. Workaround: Open up the Pages navigation pane so that you are seeing more columns of thumbnails. This will bring the last thumbnail up. You can also reduce the size of the thumbnails in order to see more of them on the screen. Cannot scan with the Kodak 665 production scanner in the Windows 7 environment The software that is needed to run the Kodak 665 production scanner is not supported in Windows 7. This software does run in Windows XP. You can upgrade to Adobe Acrobat 9 and SmartBoard 6.0 in Windows XP and continue to use the 665 scanner. Workaround: none In Windows 7, submitting jobs to color press using JDF -3 Part MIME fails with message: ""job submission cancelled, error [-321]" Using the JDF Portal with 3 Part MIME requires that SmartBoard copy the PDF content file to a protected location on the Windows 7 system. Workaround: When using this submission method, launch SmartBoard with the "Run as Administrator" option. You can selection this option by doing a right-mouse-click on the SmartBoard icon and selecting it from the menu. This will give the SmartBoard user the permissions it needs to write the file to the protected location. In Windows 7, the SmartBoard window is not the same resolution as the rest of the screen, making it unusually large The Job Ticket opens to take up almost the whole screen. When you open the Tab Creator, the bottom line of buttons is masked by the task bar on the PC, making it impossible to click on those buttons. Not possible to move the Tab Creator up any further on the screen. Only a small portion of the buttons on the bottom row are selectable, and you can't read what the buttons say. Workaround: Right-mouse-click on the Desktop background. Select the Screen Resolution option. One of the options there allows you to make "items on the screen larger or smaller". Change the selection to "medium". Now the SmartBoard screen will appear at the normal size. 3 2 Edition: April 8, 2010
Known Problems The SmartBoard Page Feature options are no longer available from the Pages Options menu. In previous releases of SmartBoard, the Pages Options menu contained a set of SmartBoard Page Features for working with page level options. The features include selecting Page Feature templates, Color Pages - Select and Extract and the Select Pages option. These features have been moved to the SmartBoard menu available at the top Acrobat menu. Workaround: None. Customer Release Notes 3 3
Known Problems Known Problems exisiting in SmartBoard 5.0, still existing in SmartBoard 6.0 General Mismatch issue. If job level Finishing Device is Stapler and job contains a subset that has sizes not supported by the Stapler AND is destined for a different Finishing Device If the job level Finishing Device is the Stapler and the job contains a subset destined for a Finishing Device other than the Stapler that has Page Features defined for sizes the Stapler does not support, the result is a mismatch at the printer that cannot be resolved. Workaround: Set up the job with Top Exit as the Finishing Device and define pages going to the Stapler as page exceptions. Job Ticket Inactive device setting If a SmartBoard 4.x color job ticket template is updated to a SmartBoard 5.0 job ticket template and a Monochrome device is enabled, there will be inactive Monochrome device setting as part of the 5.0 job ticket template. Workaround: To remove any unwanted, inactive device settings, right click the inactive device setting in a job ticket template or document job ticket and select Delete. Do not delete the Default Job Ticket The availability of the Delete mechanisms (Edit > Delete, Right-click and select Delete, Delete key, and Delete button) inconsistent when deleting job ticket device settings in job ticket templates or document job tickets. Should not be allowed to delete the User Default job ticket or delete active device settings. Workaround: Do not delete active device settings. If the User Default job ticket is deleted, go to Preferences and select a new User Default job ticket template. [Mono] Disable punching just for cover There is no mechanism on the UI to disable punching for covers when punching is enabled for the job. Workaround: If punching is enabled at the job level and you do not want the cover(s) punched, rather than using the Covers feature, define a page exception for the cover and turn off punching for the page. 3 4 Edition: April 8, 2010
Known Problems Page Features [Mono] Media Substitution list incorrectly updated when Color Page>Multiple Settings is displayed When multiple Color Pages with different media settings are selected, the Page Features dialog will select the Multiple Page Settings entry in the media list. If the Color Page setting is changed to one of the other settings and then back to the original settings, the Multiple Page Settings entry is not added back to the media list. Workaround: Exit the dialog without saving and display the Page Features dialog again. [Mono] Color inserts cannot be used as the start of a subset At this time, color inserts defined in SmartBoard are always interpreted as "insert after" the previous page. Therefore, if a page is defined as both a color insert and the start of a subset, the result is that the page ends up as the last page of the previous subset. Workaround: None. Job Ticket and Page Features handle undefined papers differently for templates. When an undefined paper is detected on opening a document or when an existing Job Ticket template using an undefined paper is applied to an open document, the Modify Media dialog is displayed. The Modify Media dialog allows the substitution of an existing paper/substrate in the Media Catalog for the undefined paper/substrate. There is also an option to not modify the paper/substrate and close the document. However, when a Page Feature template containing an undefined paper/substrate is applied to a selected page(s), the Modify Media dialog is not displayed. Instead, a message is displayed indicating the undefined paper/substrate will be substituted with the body media defined for the job. An option is available whether to go ahead with this substitution or to cancel the operation. Workaround: If the Page Feature template contains an undefined paper/substrate and the body media substitution option is not desired, cancel the substitution operation. Instead open the Page Features dialog for the selected page(s). A different paper/ substrate can now be selected from the Media Substitution list as required. Multiple consecutive Color Pages may not be printed correctly A document with a 2-sided job level printing that requests multiple consecutive Color Pages with different media substitutions may not print correctly, some of the color inserts may be combined into one insert request. Workaround: Force the color inserts to 1-sided mode by using the Sides setting of Print Side 1 Customer Release Notes 3 5
Known Problems Scanning Scanning at different resolutions within one PDF document may not work as expected. You cannot scan images at multiple resolutions into one PDF document. If not running the 65 ppm scanner in continuous mode, so that one page at a time is scanned and different settings can be applied to each page, Acrobat may not return the correct scanned page size. The resultant images may not be readable. Workaround: If this workflow is required, it can be achieved by creating a new scan document for each page, setting the appropriate resolution and scan settings required, and scanning the image. The resultant scan documents can then be assembled into one document in Acrobat via their drag/drop, copy/paste mechanism or their Create PDF from multiple images feature. Document Access Error message displayed when selecting replacement paper for a tab after opening a PS file. If a PS file is being opened as a PDF file and that file contains tab media, when the file is opened the Modify Paper dialog is displayed. When a replacement paper is selected for the tab, since the PS file tab media definition is not currently in the SmartBoard Paper catalog, an error message is displayed indicating the "Current paper selection is not valid." Workaround: Select a replacement media in the SmartBoard Paper Catalog that is 9x11 and not defined as 1-sided. The document will correctly switch the printing mode to simplex for the tabs. This can be confirmed in the Page Features dialog. Media Catalog [Mono] No error message displayed if ftp connection was unsuccessful. If after entering ftp user credentials there is a problem making the ftp connection, the dialog where the ftp credentials were entered stays up and there is no warning message indicating that a problem has occurred. Workaround: Manually dismiss the ftp dialog if it does not close on its own. [Mono] Monochrome Paper Catalog may be locked after an abnormal termination of the software. If the software terminates abnormally while in the process of editing the Paper Catalog, it is possible that the lock on the Paper Catalog will be there even after restarting Acrobat. Workaround: Manually unlock the Paper Catalog. To unlock the Paper Catalog, you must delete the.elk file from the directory in which the Paper Catalog is located. 3 6 Edition: April 8, 2010
Known Problems [Mono] Problems sharing synchronized Paper Catalog You should not share synchronized Paper Catalogs. Each SmartBoard user should synchronize their own Paper Catalog on their system rather than share a synchronized Paper Catalog. Unexpected results may occur if multiple users with write access share a synchronized catalog. Workaround: The only way sharing a synchronized Paper Catalog will work reliably is if one user is identified as the Paper Catalog Administrator (the "synchronizer ) and everyone else has read-only permission for the catalog. [Mono] Monochrome Paper Catalog Synchronization requires the printer to be on public network When a black and white digital production system is on a private network, the Paper Catalog will only be accessible to other hosts on that same network. Workaround: Use the print server to gain access to the Paper Catalog on the black and white digital production system and share it over the public network. [Color] When the Color Substrate Catalog is synchronized, a message may appear indicating that the Substrate Catalog has been modified when no new substrates have been added In an environment where the Color Substrate Catalog is synchronized with a press (e.g. a DevCaps.XML files) you may receive the message Substrate Catalog has been modified. Close all documents to receive Substrate Catalog updates. Even though no new substrates have been added. This occurs when the DevCaps.XML file has been changed for any reason (e.g. a Virtual Printer has been defined). Workaround: None. Customer Release Notes 3 7
Known Problems Work and Turn 'Fake bold' characters do not show up or print on a Work and Turned document If characters used in a document use the Symbol font, or any other font that does not have a bold version, and 'fake bold' is used, be aware that some characters may be lost during a Work and Turn operation. Workaround: Do not use "fake bold" for text characters if you plan on performing Work and Turn. Instead, use a font with a bold character set. Some color objects are not correctly copied to the second copy of a Work and Turned page When a pattern color space is used on a page, the Work and Turn tool will not copy the object that uses that color space to the second half of the page. Workaround: Do not use Work and Turn on documents that contain pattern color spaces, use Quite Imposing Plus instead. Image Editor Receive error message "Incorrect PDEObject Type" when trying to write edited image back to document. The image is not written back to the document In some instances, problems are encountered when editing PDF files created from some applications. This scenario is isolated to some distilled files. In documents with this issue, the problem can actually be seen in Acrobat when the document is displayed on the screen. Symptoms include difficulty saving edited images back to PDF files and incorrect image highlighting (does not match image bounds). Workaround: Re-distill the document with Acrobat Distiller- Print to Adobe PDF. It may then be possible to edit the image(s) using the SmartBoard Image Editor. Incorrect Undo action available in Acrobat The Image Editor "shares" the undo, and redo menus with Acrobat and other Acrobat components. In certain instances, Acrobat changes the menu text causing the available Undo action to be incorrect. An example of this scenario is as follows: first you rotate a page 90 degrees clockwise, next you open Manage Document Images and select an image, you scale the selected image, and then you open the Acrobat Edit Menu and observe the available Undo action. The available Undo action is "Undo Mirror Image", not "Undo scaling" as you would expect. Workaround: None. Mixed results for some despeckled grayscale images in Image Editor There are no adjustments available for the Despeckle function. For example, there is no way to set the pixel size for despeckling. A problem report has been logged with the image tool library vendor. Workaround: None. 3 8 Edition: April 8, 2010
Known Problems Position of the mouse unclear when using the [Shift] key to change Image Size by dragging center anchor box The rectangle drawn while holding down the [Shift] key does not correspond to the position of the mouse. The image will be resized when the mouse is released, but it is not clear what reference point is being used. This behavior is controlled by Acrobat. There is currently no way to alter this behavior. Workaround: None. Images with darker backgrounds and dark text are difficult to deskew Results may not be as expected when deskewing dark images. Workaround: None. Printer Status [Mono] SmartBoard Printer Status will not display paper supply information if there are more than three supplies If a monochrome printer has more than three supplies, SmartBoard does not display any paper supply information. Workaround: None. Japanese Support Mouse-pointer may not be updated correctly when using Image Editor on Japanese systems The mouse-pointer icon (e.g. Arrow / Cross / I-Beam) may not be correct in some instances when using the Image Editor on Japanese systems. This occurs mainly after using the Zoom feature. Workaround: None Customer Release Notes 3 9
