1 Photojournalism/Yearbook/Newsletter Clayton Middle School P. 7 RM 1041 Teacher: Julie Davidson julie.davidson@slcschools.org Photojournalism is a particular form of journalism (the collecting, editing, and presenting of news material for publication or broadcast) where the journalist creates images in order to tell a news story. Photojournalists create pictures that contribute to the news media. Timelines-- The images have meaning in the context of a recently published record of events. Objectivity-- The situation implied by the images is a fair and accurate representation of the events they depict in both content and tone. Narrative-- The images combine with other news elements to make facts relatable to the viewer or reader on a cultural level. This course is open to students who wish to explore the use of digital photography and writing to tell stories. During this semester, students will be learning valuable skills in the field of digital imaging and publishing. Students will be using Adobe Creative software. Along with introducing and deepening photography skills, some basic elements of graphic design will be a focus as the students prepare pages for the newsletter and school yearbook. Students will also practice journalistic writing, and demonstrate knowledge of copyright issues. Student work must be original unless proper attribution has been given. Course Goals and Objectives Weekly projects: Photo and writing projects based on art and journalistic concepts will be assigned weekly. The projects must be submitted on time, be clean and well-presented, be specific to the assignment, and be the student's own work. Participation: Students will be graded on their understanding and completion of assignments. They will be expected to be on time, be prepared with their required tools and materials, and participate in class discussions. Photo/Video Release Form: Students will be required to obtain a signed release form for every recognizable subject in their photographs or videos. Please be prepared to obtain those. A copy is available for use at the end of this document, and can be duplicated as needed. Course Materials We will not be using a text for this course. Students will be actively engaged in developing hands-on skills in Adobe Creative Suite software applications. Information and assignments will be forwarded to students via our classroom in Edmodo, or presented and printed as needed. The majority of learning materials will be in the form of visual presentations, some handouts, and student research. Students may use their own digital camera, their smart phone, or a school-provided camera. Students will be held liable for the school's cameras while in their possession. Lost, stolen, or damaged cameras will be the financial responsibility of the student to whom they were entrusted. The school will not be responsible for the care or safety of the students' personal cameras. Students will need to have an inexpensive 2 GB+ jump/thumb drive. Students will be expected to have this in their possession on photo shoots and lab days. Photojournalism/Yearbook/Newsletter 1
2 Format and Procedures The class will have a variety of formats and procedures, including but not limited to instruction and presentations by the teacher, and class discussions. Photo shoots in which the students will be taking pictures to fulfill assignments. Lab days in which the students will upload, organize, and manipulate photography. Copy sessions in which the students collaborate on the written articles. Students will also be participating in the production and documentation for the school yearbook. Required Course Materials Students must have the following required equipment for photographing and uploading assignments with them on lab days. Students are responsible for the care and keeping of their own equipment, and of their jump drives and photo files. An inexpensive 2 GB+ USB Jump/Thumb Drive for storing pictures and files post-editing, and for homework activities where access to classroom computers is unavailable. (Students are responsible for filing and storing their own images) A Ruled Notebook A Folder with pockets for handouts A Pen and a pencil If possible, a 4-pack of quality double A batteries for the camera you will be using. Course Requirements Students will be required to complete design projects and written assignments on time. Late photography and art assignments will result in a points deduction unless the student has been absent. Students are expected to be on time and stay until class is dismissed. Some photo assignments may be homework assignments. If a student does not have access to a camera at home, and alternative assignment will be provided. As the students responsible for producing the Clayton Blog and Yearbook, students may be asked to photograph/document related events outside of regular school hours. This is not a requirement, but is a fun way for students to feel involved in their school community, and a fun perk when they get VIP treatment with their "Press Pass" and can also provide a way to earn extra credit. I'm hoping to have a sign-up schedule shortly after the school year begins to allow sufficient time for planning. Please let me know as early as possible if/when conflicts arise that may prevent your student from attending the events that they sign up for, and I will make other arrangements for the events. If your student is planning on other events outside of school, or vacations/travel during the semester, it is possible for them to receive additional credit for submitting assignments related to these experiences. 3 Students are expected to observe the following rules: 1. Follow Directions 2. Be on time, in your seat before the bell rings 3. Listening, not talking, while the teacher or guest lecturer is talking 4. Bring your materials and current assignments with you every day 5. Always treat other students with kindness and respect. No insults or bullying allowed. Failure to follow these rules will result in the following consequences: 1. Verbal warning, loss of participation points 2. Sign the book, Essay or Letter assignment given 3. Lunch detention/pass (Positive Alternative to School Suspension) 4. Meeting/phone conference with parent 5. Reduction of citizenship grade Grading Procedures Points will be given for each completed assignment. Grades will be calculated as a percentage of total possible points according to the following scale: A % C 65%-69% A- 90%-94% C- 60%-64% B+ 85%-89% D+ 58%-59% B 80%-84% D 56%-57% B- 75%-79% D- 54%-55% C+ 70%-74% Students' citizenship grades will be evaluated on an ongoing basis according to the following scale: H: Contributes in a positive way to class activities S: Demonstrates satisfactory behavior N: Behavior needs improvement U: Detracts from classroom objectives Photojournalism/Yearbook/Newsletter 3
4 Each student and their guardian is asked to sign or reject the Photo Release Form. They should also have copies made and kept in their notebook folder, to be signed by subjects in their photo assignments. Parents and students can access student progress at any time via Powerschool and Edmodo. If you do not have a login, please contact the district office at or I maintain an open-door policy.
