1 Digital Photography Course Syllabus Summer 2015 Instructor: Helen Rindsberg Course Meets: June 8 through June 26, 2015 From 10:45 AM 12:45 PM Course Web Site: Course Description: Students will learn to creatively express their artistic ideas using a digital camera. This course will be a mixture of lecture, discussion, research, writing and fieldwork. Participants will explore the history of photography with a special emphasis on photojournalism and portraiture. Each student will complete a photo essay expressing her ideas about her community and her place in it. Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to: 1. create and print digital photographs in a variety of styles. 2. create a photo essay on the theme of My Community. 3. analyze the formal elements (design and composition) in photographs. 4. analyze the creative elements in photographs 5. identify major historical achievements technical and artistic in photography. 6. identify major photographers and their achievements. 7. identify political, economic and social influences on photography and photographers. Teaching Methodology (Learning Strategies): The instructor will use demonstrations, PowerPoint presentations, discussions, and focused daily class and homework assignments to meet the class objectives. Each student will complete a photo essay on the theme My Community. The essay will use photographs to communicate her ideas and feelings about her membership in a community that is significant to her. Writing assignments will help students deepen their knowledge of the process of photography (both artistic and technical), selected photographers and reflect on what they have learned. Classroom Behavior: We will have frequent classroom discussions. You will respect everyone s ideas, use active listening skills and present positive feedback. You will be working with a partner or in groups on different classroom assignments. You will respect everyone s learning process, support everyone s strengths and assist everyone who needs technical or creative assistance. Syllabus: Basic Photography Class 1 Summer 2015
2 Attendance Policy: Attendance in class every day is required. There may be one excused absence in extreme circumstances; the instructor should be notified prior to the class. All class work and homework must be made up. Students are expected to arrive on time and remain the entire class session. Method of Evaluating Achievement Outcomes: 1. Daily classroom assignments: 18 points total 2. Daily homework assignments: 20 points total 3. Writing Assignments: Daily journal writing: 12 points Great Photographers Research Paper: 15 points Reflections Essay: 5 points 4. CD and contact sheet of Best Of Portfolio: 3 points 5. Photo essay on the theme of My Community : 27 points Grading Scale: =A, 86-92=B, 78-85=C, 70-77=D, below 70=F The top two numbers in each grade range are + and the bottom two numbers are -. Academic Integrity: When we use the information and language of others to enrich our reflection and research papers we must: 1. tell the reader when we are quoting and indicate the source (person, book, article, etc.) of the quotation. 2. tell the reader when we are paraphrasing and indicate the source (person, book, article, etc.) of that information. Quoting or paraphrasing the information and/or language of a source without naming the source is plagiarism. Plagiarism is unacceptable in an academic institution and is subject to penalty. June 26, 2015: 10:45 AM Students make final preparations and put their assignments in the special envelope and set up for their presentations 10:50 AM Discussion of the homework assignments of 2 students 11:00 AM Begin student presentations of the My Community photo essay and Reflective Essay. Each student will have a maximum of five minutes, including set-up and take down. Each student turns in her envelope at the beginning of her presentation. 11:45 AM Break for snacks 12:45 PM Good bye!
