1 Instructor: Mr. Shepard E- mail: Classroom: C116 Yearbook Course Syllabus WAYZATA HIGH SCHOOL Business Department: Computers/Technology Welcome to the class that will create the 2014 Wayako. With a few exceptions, this course is unlike any you have taken. This course may be the hardest course you will take, but the rewards are plentiful and fabulous. Course Description: Yearbook is designed for students who wish to be on the yearbook staff. The yearbook staff creates the Wayako yearbook. This includes, but is not limited to journalism, composition, design, and publishing. Special emphasis is placed upon: (1) Desktop publishing using Walsworth Online software; (2) Digital photography techniques and application; digital editing using Adobe Photoshop CS5 (3) Journalistic feature writing techniques; (4) Teamwork. In yearbook, staffers will be assigned pages and be responsible for taking pictures, writing articles, conducting interviews, and designing their page. Class Expectations: You will be expected to work hard in class as well as after school each and every day. The editorial board will assign you certain responsibilities in which you, as an individual, will be evaluated on. As a staff member, you will be required to think critically and professionally, you must uphold a high level of maturity and constantly think before you act. Although most of the work is done in class, extra after school time will be required to meet deadlines. Communication is the key to success in this course. You will often need to work with your peers to complete projects and meet deadlines. See attached Guiding Principles for more details. Being a yearbook staffer is a huge commitment. Students are also expected to attend school functions to take pictures (i.e. games, afterschool clubs, etc.). In class work time is crucial. Students who miss a lot of school should reconsider taking yearbook since the workload without class time could be overwhelming. If you are a student who has a packed schedule and would not be available before or after school or frequently misses class you should reconsider taking yearbook. YEARBOOK IS NOT A SLACKER CLASS! Keep in mind that your work will viewed and judged by all your peers, family members, and teachers. Yearbooks are kept for many years and looked back at. You re going to want to be able to take pride in your work. Materials: A spiral notebook and two- pocket folder Writing utensils Digital camera Walsworth Online Design Adobe InDesign CS6 Adobe Photoshop CS6

2 Grading Policy Per Term: Production/Participation/Contribution [90%]: Student work on yearbook pages will be graded based upon their on- time completion and quality. The quality portion of this grade will be based on how well the students follow the style guide, the changes suggested by the editorial board and adviser, the publishable quality of the pages, and the completion of the process checklist and page rubric. Publishable quality includes how ready the pages are for final submission few changes should be required. The on- time portion of the grade is based upon meeting deadlines. You will be given a 20% penalty per day late on all pages assigned to you. Furthermore, yearbook staff members earn points for every day present in class. If students are absent (for ANY reason), they must make- up the time missed. School authorized absences may not require make up; however you may find that you need to stay after school to finish your deadline. Points will also be earned or lost from this category if class time is not used professionally, productively, and/or privileges are abused. Students will be reporting weekly with a contribution and planning log to help determine this portion of the grade as well as editorial board and adviser observations. Misrepresentation policy: any misspelled name, misidentified photo, or misquote on a page results in an automatic loss of one letter grade for the page in question. Assignments [10%]: Assignments designed to help students learn the skills necessary for production will also be given in class point and due dates will be announced in advance so students can effectively complete them. Photography assignments and/or weekly writing assignments may be assigned, as well. Quizzes and tests scores will also be included in this category if and when given. All grades are posted on the Skyward Student and Family Access. It is your responsibility to check your grades. Course Learning Goals: Few classes or activities offer the diverse skills that are gained from working on the yearbook: Journalistic Skills Technology Skills Concept brainstorming Computers hardware and Research & Interviewing software Reporting & Writing: Scanners composition, revision, proofreading Digital and Traditional Cameras Photography: camera Word processing basics, composition, Desktop publishing selection & editing Internet Graphic Design Uploading files to servers Marketing & Sales Life Skills Communication: listening, questioning, conducting meetings Leadership Time management & deadline planning Project management Problem solving Organization Working well with a team of peers. Division of Yearbook Publication Work: Fall Semester work includes, but is not limited to: the portrait section of the yearbook, fall sports, student life, and academics sections of the yearbook. Spring Semester work includes, but is not limited to: winter sports, clubs and performing arts, index and student life sections, spring supplement.

3 Editors Marissa Ablack EDITOR- IN- CHIEF My name is Marissa Ablack and I am the Editor- In- Chief of Wayako As Editor- In- Chief, it's my job to foresee all of the operations that involve the yearbook, and to make sure everything is running smoothly: from photography to references pages. Being a part of Wayzata High School's yearbook is a unique and unforgettable experience and I am so grateful to be a part of it all. I am available to contact with any questions, comments, or concerns. Bri Prodahl DESIGN Hi! My name is Bri Prodahl and I am the Wayako Design Editor for the yearbook. As design editor I will design layouts and edit spreads to make sure that the pages created work well with the theme and design of the book as a whole. As design editor i will also work closely with the other editors to make sure that the book flows well and is pleasing to the viewers eye. I am also very familiar with Photoshop and will be able to create unique design elements with the skills I have learned in the program. If you have any questions regarding design or Photoshop feel free to ask me. I am very excited to start working on the yearbook and cannot wait to see the finished product! Hannah Weas PHOTOGRAPHY My name is Hannah Weas and I'm the photography editor this year. As photography editor I work with both editors and staffers to create visually pleasing and memory evoking photo spreads. To achieve this, we will be utilizing equipment like cameras and Photoshop to help us capture every moment in the 2013/2014 school year. If you have any questions about photo spreads, cameras or this upcoming year, feel free to contact me. I look forward to this year and can't wait to start working on this year s book! Caitlyn Lindquist PEOPLE Hi! I'm Caitlyn Lindquist and I am Wayako's People Editor for the yearbook. As people editor I deal with all of the student and staff portrait pages, senior superlatives, and surveys. Being people editor means that I will put and format everyone's school pictures onto the people pages. Also on people pages are student spotlight stories which are interesting things that students have done in their time during high school, and I will help you guys with those. I can't wait to work with all of you this year and I am so excited to see the final product! Sophie Toland SPORTS & ACTIVITIES As Sports and Activities Editor of the 2014 Wayako Yearbook staff, my job is to organize most of the outside of school. Of course I will be doing pages, but my main goal is to help in anyway that I can. I love sushi, black and white anything, One Direction, coffee, and traveling. Outside of school, I am a competitor in DECA, member of NHS, Spanish Club officer, and CCRF volunteer. With such an amazing chief and editorial staff, I am elated to see how the book turns out nine months from now. I hope you all enjoy yearbook as much as I do.

4 Amy Rush COPY Hi, I'm Amy Rush and I will be the copy editor for this year's Wayako. Copy is all of the writing in the book, including stories, captions, and headlines. My job is to read and edit any copy going into the book, as well as help the staffers develop a compelling story. Copy is a vital part of the yearbook because it allows the reader to learn new things about Wayzata High School students, staff, clubs, and sports. If you have any questions regarding copy or interviews, feel free to ask, as I am here to help! I'm excited to get to work, and look forward to creating a book that everyone will love. Ally Breyer BUSINESS MANAGER Hello! My name is Ally Breyer and I am this years Business Manager! I will be dealing with the business side of the yearbook along with helping edit the pages! I'm so excited to be a part of the editorial staff! I've been a yearbook staffer since sophomore year and have had a blast making the past yearbooks! Feel free to ask me if you need help with any component of your page, I've been in your shoes so ask me anything! You will learn and take so much from this class and I hope you all enjoy yearbook as much as I do, It's going to be a great year! Molly Galinson PORTRATS My name is Molly Galinson and I am the portraits editor! As portraits editor, it is my job to ensure that there is equal representation of the large student body that WHS has. Another role that I am taking on this year as portraits editor is senior portraits. This is a big job, but I am looking forward to working with the staff and my fellow editors to create the best product we can. Please don t hesitate to me with questions about senior portraits or yearbook in general! Tyler Shepard ADVISER I m your teacher, adviser, and mentor through the yearbook process. It is my job to track the progress of the editors as well as you staff members to ensure that deadlines are met with accuracy. I ve established a system of evaluating editors and staff members on assignments and oversee the business side of the yearbook project. After each deadline, I am in charge of contacting our Walsworth representative, Mary Czech, and publishing our final pages. Deadlines are extremely important, so I will be rather strict with these. Keep in mind that your editorial board is in charge and they are here as your resource, helpers, peers, and friends. I serve as a liaison between the WHS administration, Mary Czech, our Walsworth plant consultant, and staff members. I am also in charge of maintaining our budget, ensuring that all cost estimates, yearbook sales, and changes are kept within our allocated funds (the yearbook creation process is expensive!). I look forward to a fresh semester of staff members and guarantee that you ll enjoy yearbook as long as you re not afraid to work hard, have the ability to stay organized, and establish a sense of pride for this year s book. Mary Czech WALSWORTH REPRESENTATIVE I m your middleman between the yearbook plant (who actually makes the yearbook) and tshep. Over the course of the school year, I ll come in and work with you to help critique, strategize, and improve the quality of your book. I enjoy working with students and truly value the connection that we can make within your school.

5 Wayako Guiding Principles Yearbook production is a process that requires active participation from all its members. Please read and initial each of the following guidelines you are expected to follow as a member of this team and realize that your grade will be impacted by your choices both positive and negative. 1. I will be in class every day, ON TIME. If I am late, I will sign in and list a reason for lateness. I will notify Mr. Shepard if I need to leave the room on official yearbook business, sign out, and utilize a press pass. Otherwise, I will remain in the C- 116 yearbook/journalism lab. The breakout rooms are also available for official yearbook business. I will make up any missed class days on my own time, and realize that hours I do not make up may impact my grade in the class. 2. This is a professional environment, much like a business. As such, I will use my time in class to work on Wayako projects only. If I don t think I have anything to do, I will ask an editor how I can help. I can expect to receive consequences for using my time in class for anything other than official business. 3. I will work my hardest to accurately and completely cover the year s events. This may mean that I have to attend events outside the school day to complete my work. I will correctly quote, correctly identify, and correctly represent every person covered in the yearbook. I will not use my privileges to get my friends in the yearbook, but work to get all students pictured. 4. While rare, you should be aware of this: I realize that I can be held responsible legally for my actions. This means that if I create or support a libelous, offensive or illegal statement (verbal or visual) in the yearbook, I could be sued, along with my parents if I am under 18. I am protected under the First Amendment to the U.S. Constitution for legal and factual statements and opinions, but not protected for invasion of privacy, obscenity, copyright violations, or defamation of another person s character. 5. I will use the yearbook room responsibly. I will not use the room or equipment to complete personal projects. I will not allow my friends to use the yearbook room or equipment. 6. I will handle all Wayako equipment with care. When I check out a camera or other equipment, I will keep it completely in my own possession and return it promptly upon completion. I will not leave cameras lying around. I can expect consequences (including restitution i.e. paying to repair or replace it) for mishandling, losing or breaking equipment while it is in my possession. 7. I will hand in my assigned Wayako work ON TIME, fully completed, per the deadline and other schedules set by the editors, under the guidance of the adviser. Any extensions must be approved in advance. I can expect that late work due to lack of time management and/or disorganization will greatly impact my grade. 8. I will become knowledgeable in all aspects of yearbook production, including, but not limited to: use of InDesign and Photoshop, use of digital camera, design, news feature writing, and caption writing, Jostens publication process, student press law, historical freedom of speech events, and deadlines. I understand that some of the information will be learned through my own reading and through class discussions and presentations. I understand that I may be tested on this information and my grade will be affected. I have read and understand the guiding principles as set forth above, and agree to abide by them. I understand that consequences may result from choosing to not follow the aforementioned principles.
