The Develping Persn thrugh Childhd and Adlescence (9th ed.). NY: Wrth Publishers. Overview: The develpment f an individual is a never-ending prcess. This curse is nt nly abut children and adlescence, but als each and every ne f ur wn lives and develpment. Althugh persnal anecdtes and experiences are interesting, bear in mind that this curse will fcus n develpmental theries, research, and practice derived frm scientific study. This curse will take a chrnlgical apprach explring the physical, cgnitive, and sci-emtinal areas at each stage f develpment. Curse Objectives: 1. Understand basic scientific knwledge, terminlgy, research results, and theries f develpmental psychlgy frm birth thrugh adlescence. 2. Understand nrmal develpment and its variatins in the areas f cgnitin, sciemtinal, and physical develpment frm birth thrugh adlescence. 3. Understand relatinships between scientific research and practical applicatins in the areas f child and adlescent develpment. 4. Understand scientific research methds in develpmental psychlgy. 5. Acquire critical thinking skills in interpreting research in develpmental psychlgy. Plagiarism is the presentatin f anther persn s ideas r writings as ne s wn. In this class, bth plagiarism and cheating n tests and papers will result, at minimum, in an F t the assignment r test. Please hand in yur wn wrk. This curse is t be treated the same as a traditinal curse taught in the classrm. Time Expectatins: As yu can imagine, the nline frmat f this class changes many things. Nw, instead f ging t class three times a week and listening t an hur lng lecture, yu will be required t read the lecture n yur wn. Instead f having in-class discussins yu will be reading and writing discussin psts. The utside class will be the same as ther curses, reading the bk and ding assignments. Thank yu in advance fr yur cperatin with this. Curse Requirements & Expectatins: This is an nline curse, as such it is expected that yu will have access t a cmputer. Cmputer prblems are nt an excuse fr failure t submit assignments n time. Plan accrdingly and make sure yu have alternatives in mind shuld yu have cmputer difficulties! Technical prblems will NOT be accepted fr late/missed cursewrk. If yu d nt pssess practical cmputer skills, d nt take this curse. ADVICE: Save everythins frequently and always! It is highly encuraged t write assignments in a text editr (e.g., Micrsft Wrd) and then paste yur answers int Mdle when necessary. Mdle will time ut after 30 minutes f inactivity. Yu are als expected t regularly check yur . Students must engage in prper nline curtesy. Please respect yur fellw classmates and instructr. Even thugh we d nt meet face-t-face, the same learning envirnment is in place. Failure t engage in prper nline curtesy will result in earning a zer fr each assignment where an incident has ccurred. Bttm line: Yu are expected t treat thers taking this curse just as yu wuld treat thers in an actual classrm. A few pints abut nline etiquette: D nt shut r yell. Using all capital letters is cnsidered the same as yelling in persn. DO NOT TYPE IN ALL CAPS. Dn nt use any net speak, such as brb (be right back), 18r (later), u, (yu), etc. They are nt prfessinal and may make it difficult t read yur psts r assignments. Yu are expected t write in an academically apprpriate manner at all times. This includes prper spelling, grammar, capitalizatin, and punctuatin! Privacy Plicy Discussing yur grades in the pen discussin frum is nt allwed. Grades are a cnfidential matter. N ne has access t yur grades except yu and me (the instructr). If yu have any questins abut yur grades, me and I will be happy t discuss my grading ratinale with yu. N late assignments r exams will be accepted. Exams are due by the date/time stated. N exceptins. Yu will nt receive a reduced grade/pints taken ff. Late assignments are given zers. Again, plan yur time accrdingly! T be able t make up missed assignments it is MANDATORY that yu (1) ntify me befre the time f yur absence and (2) prvide prper dcumentatin verifying the reasn fr yur absence. Yu can prvide dcumentatin by scanning and ing the dcuments. Expectatins are detailed in this syllabus. It is each student s respnsibility t read and understand the syllabus and its plicies. If yu are nt clear n any prtin f the curse, please cntact me. Chapter Slides: Fr each chapter, I will prvide PwerPint slides intended t be used in cnjunctin with the text. Yu are expected t read these. Occasinally, they will have links/urls in them. Yu are required t knw the general infrmatin in these. (Typically, they will be shrt articles r vides). Yu are expected t read the entire chapter fr each unit/develpmental perid under discussin. D nt nly read the slides! (The slides will nt cver everything in the text). Assignments: A Nte A but Assignments: All assignments fr each unit are due n the same day. I realize this may seem like a lt, hwever due t the integrative nature f the material, it is necessary t have read all the chapters related t the develpmental perid under discussin.

Discussin Bard Debate The purpse f the discussin bard debate is t have sme interactin with yur fellw classmates as well as read n sme issues pertinent t develpment. Fr each issue, yu will read either a chapter frm Taking Sides: Clashing Views n Cntrversial Issues in Childhd and Sciety r tw paired texts frm ther surces (these will be available t yu n Mdle under the Debate Tpics menu). There will be tw debate tpics available fr each develpmental perid. Yu will chse ne f the tpics and read the assigned text(s), after which yu will write a main respnse ( wrds) abut which side yu are n fr the issue. Additinally, yu will be require t pst a brief respnse (ne paragraph) t a classmate (wh selected the ther debate tpic) within 48 hurs f the deadline fr submitting the main respnse. Yu will pst these n the apprpriate frum under the Discussin Bard menu. Example: The tw tpics fr the first three weeks will be (1) Shuld there be any age limit fr wmen receiving IVF?, and (2) Shuld parents be allwed t genetically selected the sex f their children? After selecting a tpic, yu will read the assigned articles (bth the pr and cn sides), then yu will write yur main respnse ( wrds) integrating material fr the text, slides, and ther surces. Within 48 hurs f the deadline fr the main respnse, yu will pst a brief respnse (ne paragraph) abut a classmate s pst addressing the debate tpic yu did nt chse. S if yu chse t write yur main respnse supprting parents rights t genetically determine the sex f their children, then yur brief respnse wuld fcus n addressing a classmate wh tk a stance n whether there shuld be an age limit fr wmen receiving IVF. Article Reviews The purpse f these article reviews is t read current research abut specific and interesting tpics nt fund in the textbk. It is als t give yu sme familiarity with published, peer-reviewed Develpmental Psychlgy articles, Yu are nt expected t understand all the statistics under the Results sectin, just skim these sectins f the articles, There will be a template labeled Article Review Questins available n Mdle under Article Reviews. Yu will need t answer this same set f questins fr each f the five article review assignments, There are n frmatting requirements fr these assignments, but it is expected that yu will use cmplete sentences in a paragraph frm t answer the questin with prper grammar and punctuatin. (D nt use bullet pints t respnd t the questins!) Yu my chse yur wn article t review as lng as it (1) crrespnds t the develpmental perid that we are studying, (2) has been published within the last 5 years in a peer-reviewed jurnal, and (3) is experimental in nature (i.e., has cntrl and experimental grups). I will pst at least ne article fr each develpmental perid that yu can review, shuld yu chse t nt select ne fr yurself. The five yu chse, and the rder yu select them, will be up t yu. Cmpare/cntrast child rearing practices in tw different cultures. Based n what yu have learned, which elements f childrearing are the mst apprpriate in each culture and which are trublesme? Naturalistic bservatin. Find a place where there are babies/children/adlescents (this can be a park, museum, sprting event, etc.) and bserve a phenmenn f interest discussed in class. Write a detailed descriptin f what yu bserve. A yung cuple with a three-mnth-ld infant is finding it difficult t make ends meet n just ne incme. They cme t yu (as a child develpment expert) and ask fr yur advice n whether r nt daycare will damage their child in any way. What advice wuld yu give them? Hw shuld parents minimize the effects f divrce n children? What factrs d they need t cnsider? What effects shuld they be aware f?

Cmpare/cntrast childhd tday with anther perid in histry. What are the prs/cms invlved in grwing up in Western cultures tday? Watch a film fcusing predminantly n a child character. Discuss the child s develpment ver the curse f the film in relatin t what yu have learned in class. Papers shuld be apprximately tw pages duble-spaced. Be sure t integrate cncepts discussed in class and cite utside surces when apprpriate. Attachments: Please include yur last name and the type f assignment (i.e., Article Review r Assignment Buffet) in the title f the attachment when submitting yur wrk, I will cnfirm the receipt f yur assignments within 48 hurs after the deadline, I will nt print and return yur papers. I will nt accept excuses f I sent it but it must nt have gtten there, Again, cmputer issues are nt valid, Assignments will be accepted until 11:59pm n their due date. Exam Plicies and Prcedures: Exams will be multiple-chice, true/false, and shrt answer. They will NOT be cumulative. That is, each exam will nly test n the material frm the current develpmental perid under discussin. Anything frm readings, assignments, and slides may appear f exams. All exams must be taken. There will be n makeup exams! Exams will be administered via Mdle. Please nte the fllwing: N late exams will be accepted, regardless f cmputer prblems, N alternative assignments will be made fr giving any exam early due t travel plans, schl prjects, r ther curse requirements. This includes the final, Exams will be available fr ne week. Once started, yu will have 2 hurs t cmplete an exam. Make sure yu d nt start the test until yu are ready t finish it in ne sitting! Althugh exams are pen bk and pen nte, keep in mind that this tw hurs is intended fr yu t read and submit answers t Mdle. It is recmmended that

Save yur exam frequently! It is recmmended t make a nte f yur answers (in a separate file/dcument) in the event that the exam des nt get submitted t Mdle and yu need t reenter yur answers. Extra Credit: There will be n extra credit in this class. One Final Nte: Althugh this class is nline s yu d nt see me in persn, I am available and expect yu t use me as a resurce when needed. If yu find yurself struggling in this class, it is better t ask fr help early in the semester rather than waiting until it is t late t make a difference. I am here t help! A = 90%-100% B = 80%-89% C = 70%-79% D = 60%-69% F = < 60% N + s r - s but 0.5% r abve are runded up. Ex) 89.5 => A Ex) 89.4 => B N pass/fail ptin is available fr this class.
