The Green Knights outshot the Cobbers Blake Bashor made 14 saves for the Green Knights, while Jeremy Boniface made 36 saves for the Cobbers. St. Norbert beat St. John s 3-2 last Nov. 11 at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud. Marc Belanger and Dustin Dubas gave St. Norbert a 2-0 lead before the Johnnies Nate Meinz and Karl Gilbert tied the score. Steven Sleep s goal late in the second period was the difference. Kyle Jones made 30 saves for St. Norbert, while Vince Wheeler made 18 for the Johnnies. About the Green Knights: St. Norbert improved to 3-0 with a weekend road sweep of Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference foes. The Green Knights topped Gustavus Adolphus 7-5 before beating St. Olaf 5-2. The Green Knights have already scored 20 goals in three games after scoring 118 in 32 games last season. Freshman forward Alain Joanette has four goals along with one assist for five points. Junior forward A.J. Gale has a team-high seven points, netting three goals and four assists. Junior forward Shane Wheeler and Tyler Allen each have three goals apiece. Sophomore Blake Bashor is 1-0 this season with a 2.01 goals against average and.889 save percentage. Sophomore B.J. About the Cobbers: Concordia dropped a pair of games last weekend to open the season, falling at home to UW- Stevens Point 3-1 and UW-Eau Claire 5-4. Concordia had 15 power plays against Stevens Point but scored just once. Senior forward Ryan Clukey scored two goals and three assists last weekend to lead the Cobbers, while sophomore forward Michael Weiss had two goals for two points. Freshman forward Marc Harris has two assists for two points. Freshman goalie Elliot Okland got the start against Stevens Point and has a goals against average of 3.02 and a save percentage of.903. Junior Mike Persson had the nod against Eau Claire and has a GAA of 5.02 and a save percentage of.857. Concordia s power play is 3-for- 19 (15.8 percent) and its penalty kill is 12-for-15 (80 percent). About the Johnnies: St. John s also opened the season last weekend at home against Eau Claire and Stevens Point. The Johnnies lost to the Blugolds 3-2 on Friday before falling to the Pointers 5-4 on Saturday. Senior forward Brian Baker leads the St. John s offense with one goal and two assists for three points. Sophomore defenseman Jared Smith has three assists for three points, while sophomore defenseman Brent Brodersen has a pair of power-play goals for two points. Senior goalie Vince Wheeler got the start against Eau Claire and has a 3.03 goals against average and a.906 save percentage. Freshman Steele DeFazio has a 5.12 GAA with an.808 save percentage. St. John s power play is 3-for-16 (18.8 percent) while its penalty kill is 12-for-13 (92.3 percent). Gimme Five: St. Norbert is unbeaten in its last
3 209 games when scoring five goals or more with a mark since a 7-5 loss to Bemidji State in De Pere on Jan. 12, The Green Knights had an 85-game winning streak snapped when scoring five or more goals when they tied UW-Superior 5-5 on Dec. 3, St. Norbert is in its last 26 games when allowing five goals or more dating back to the season. The only wins were a 9-5 win over St. Scholastica on Feb. 20, 1999, a 7-5 win over UW-Stout on Nov. 30, 2001, another win over UW-Stout in an 8-5 triumph on Jan. 14, 2005, a 7-5 win over UW-Stevens Point on Feb. 3, 2007 and a 7-5 win over Gustavus Adolphus on Oct. 31, The Green Knights have allowed five goals just 11 times in their last 211 games. St. Norbert hadn t allowed at least five goals in 41 games until Gustavus Adolphus scored five times on Oct. 31, MIAC Minutiae: St. Norbert has a solid record against Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference competition since Tim Coghlin took over the Green Knights' helm in Two of the losses came in a sweep at St. Mary's in Coghlin's first year of Since then, the Green Knights are against the MIAC. The 32-game unbeaten streak is a school record. The Green Knights 32-game unbeaten streak is the secondlongest in Division III history. Massachusetts-Dartmouth holds the Division III record at 38 games from Jan. 16, 1985 to March 2, In addition to the current streak, St. Norbert has had two 19-game unbeaten streaks in its history, and fashioned a 26-game skein during the season. With its collection of unbeaten streaks of at least 19 games, St. Norbert now has four of the top 12 unbeaten streaks in NCAA Division III history. Middlebury is the only other Division III school which has at least two unbeaten streaks of at least 19 games. St. Norbert s best ever stretch of hockey came at the end of the season into the season. The Green Knights carried a 19- game unbeaten streak (17-0-2) into the 2003 Frozen Four before losing to Norwich in a national semifinal.
